Top-rated things to do in South Africa

Unique activities hosted by local experts vetted for quality

  • Paddle with the Penguins
Meet Terry Corr or Jon Monsoon, Your qualified Marine Conservationists and Sea Kayak guides at our Shark Warrior Adventure Centre at Seaforth beach, receiving an interactive presentation. You will receive a safety briefing before jumping into our comfortable sea kayaks, and head out into the big blue. Rounding the corner, you will be faced by incredible African Penguins at Boulders Beach. Paddling is easy, at your own pace and we reach the remote Windmill beach, where we spend time in the sun swimming. On our return journey, we head out to Ark rock to visit playful cape fur seals. We paddle back to our centre to complete our experience. An awesome adventure that is responsible, the best way to meet the Penguins, learn more about sharks, and the wonderful creatures that inhabit the unique kelp forests. Other things to note Very Important! As an AirBnB experience and required by SA Government regulations, we require all our guests to follow our CoVid 19 Protocol which requires mask wearing, hand sanitizing, temperature check and social distancing. Please Bring your swim suit, towel, phone, hat, sun cream

  • The Art of Penguin Conservation
Waddle with me (and my sidekick Sushi) into the fascinating world of Africa's only penguin species! Over the course of a fun and informative chat /drawing class you’ll discover little-known facts and amazing insights into the unique lifestyle of our endangered penguins and the conservation challenges they face all brought to life through my photos, videos and our very own penguin drawing created during our time together. (Your completed artwork at the end will form part of a global penguin conservation project.) Most importantly: by participating in this experience, you will be directly contributing to the conservation of African penguins. This can be added to your home-school schedule as a biology, conservation, and art class, or it can be a fun way to connect as a family celebrating a special event or as a corporate team working remotely. Book a Private Experience for just your group or contact me for dates and times not shown. No matter your age, the story of our African penguins will enthrall you and definitely leave you with a new appreciation for penguins being more than just cute waddlers.

  • Organic Table Mountain Hike
Join us to climb the secret trails of Table Mountain away from the crowds. We will take you on some amazing private routes, known only to locals, which are less travelled and more scenic, offering great wildlife spotting opportunities and phenomenal views. Along the way you will learn about the birds and wildlife found on the mountain and the famous fynbos belt, which makes up nearly 10% of all the entire plant species on earth. South Africa is the only country that can claim to have one of the world's six floral kingdoms completely within its borders in Cape Town. We stop regularly to soak up the beauty and enjoy freshly brewed organic coffee or tea together with local organic South African snacks and treats, all whilst enjoying superb views of the “Mother City” and the Cape Peninsula. You can choose to come down using the cable car or (and depending on time and weather), you can also hike down to complete your experience! Other things to note Bring along 1-2 liters of Water, warm Jacket (preferably a lite wind braker or quick dry), Sunhat & sunscreen. Depending on route we will arrange a meeting point from where we will start or end.

  • Experience The Underwater Wilderness
The trip starts with a meet and greet as well as completing the indemnity form. We then head down to the beach to issue you with your snorkeling gear (If you don't have your own), taking some time to ensure everything fits properly and you're feeling nice and comfy and cover any questions or concerns. We will get your shoe size for the fins when you book. For beginners we also run a short "skills" session, where we will teach you the basics of using your gear, how to get water out of your mask, how to move in the water and how to fix potential problems you may encounter whilst snorkeling, the purpose here is merely to ensure you are comfortable and have FUN ! After this, we hit the water, where we will point out interesting marine life and also keep a beady eye on you. You can expect to see at least 20-50 species of fish, corals, a wide variety of invertebrates and big shoals swimming around, including Moray Eels, Parrotfish, Damsels, Surgeons, Butterflyfish and loads of other colourful invertebrates. The entire trip lasts about two hours and includes photos of you snorkeling underwater and a free copy of our marine life ID guide. Other things to note The experience is really safe and relaxing, we don't go out into the open ocean at all and water is seldom more than 1.5m deep. Our departure times may vary depending on the tides and ocean conditions

  • In the hood
We will meet at the Hout Bay Harbour (Fish on the Rocks) , from there we will start the visit of the community. We will take a long walk around the community; meeting interesting local people as the Khoi or Rastas (knowing the herbs they used for ancient generations) , by there I will explain you the situation of our community; where seafood is flooded and poverty and unemployment is the biggest obstacle to overcome. Then we I will explain you some of the projects that Meraki Bay is developing around Hangberg. After knowing the community we will make a little hike up to the mountain looking for the amazing views that the Sentinel Mountain can offer us. Before finish we can try some local food in the community if the visitors want it. We can make this plan, but as this is a unique experience, if you want to stay more time meeting people from the community, chatting with them or enjoying the environment we can work it out! Other things to note Meeting point (fish on the rocks) At the final of Hout Bay Harbour! So close to Snoekies
