Sanibel Island is recognized as one of the world’s best beaches. It is also known as one of the best family getaway locations for island vacations. The island is very close to the mainland, but it feels like another world. Gentle aquamarine waters of the Gulf of Mexico, golden sand and warm sun hold sway throughout the year. Sanibel is 12 miles long and 4 miles wide, and is famous for the world-class shelling beaches which stretch along the coast. The unique geographical orientation from east to west makes the beaches perfect for collecting shells from the Gulf of Mexico. With no traffic lights, neon or high-rises, Sanibel has an authentic old-world Island charm. It is unlike anything else in The United States and a Sanibel Island vacation is a dream. The Sanibel-Captiva Barrier Islands are a relatively new geological feature. It was formed within the last 6,000 years – a geological blink of an eye. The islands formed as a result of siltation and accretion, as sand was pushed onto the bedrock forming the sea floor at the edge of the mainland. Nearly half of the 12,000-acre island is designated for conservation and preservation. This is most notably in the form of the J.N. “Ding” Darling Wildlife Sanctuary, which is the largest undeveloped mangrove sanctuary in the United States. Sanibel Island has been continuously inhabited since at least 500 B.C.E, first by the Calusa Indians, then by European settlers after it was first “discovered” by Ponce De Leon in 1513. Legend has it that Ponce De Leon named the Island “Santa Isabella” after Queen Isabel while searching for the “Fountain of Youth.” In 1523, after two years attempting to establish a permanent colony, and searching in vain for the secret of eternal youth, Ponce de Leon was struck by an arrow and gravely injured in a battle with a Calusa raiding party. The Spaniards abandoned their colony in defeat and retreated to Cuba, where De Leon died from his wounds. Other legends claim the Island was named by the first mate of the famous pirate Gasparilla, after his beautiful lover Sanybel, whom he had left behind in Spain. The first known appearance of a named location on the island is from a map dated from 1765. The map was labeled Puerto de S. Nibel. Furthermore, the historic lighthouse is located at Point Ybel, derived from the original name, Santa Ybel. Sanibel is the perfect backdrop for stories of pirates and buried treasure. Many colorful and interesting characters have made the island their home. the first modern settlement on Sanibel, or “Sanybel” as it was known at the time, was established by the Florida Peninsular Land Company in 1832. The colonists abandoned Sanibel just 17 years later in 1849. After the island was repopulated in 1862, permission for a lighthouse was granted. The lighthouse was not begun until 1884, but was completed just a few months later. Since that time, Sanibel has been one of the best kept secrets for vacationers lucky enough to discover it. Through conservation, care and the love of the people who live, work and visit here, the Island maintains the rustic seaside charm which has made it the gem of the Gulf for the last 100+ years. Modern Day Sanibel Island hasn’t changed much. There are no traffic lights, and one main road. In addition, boutique shops and restaurants are alive with character. People are friendly, and it is one of the safest cities in America. Perfect for families, and pets are welcome at many hotels, condos and beaches.   • The condo was very clean and well stocked. We visited with two children (3 and 5) and the condo was perfect. The location was great, steps to the beach and across the street from the bike path. We were a quick bike ride to Bailey's grocery store and lots of restaurants (all which were kid friendly). The pool was great and the clubhouse had daily children activities.

  • Great beach location on Sanibel. The condo was beautiful and very comfortable. The kitchen has everything needed to prep meals. You can be to the beach in a matter of minutes from your front door and we experienced some of the best shelling on the island right there. The in-unit laundry made it possible for us to pack light (to bring back more shells) and the comfortable living room allowed us time to relax after dark. Perfect location and will certainly be back!

  • The location was perfect for us, close to family in Captiva, away from all traffic on Periwinkle and an easy walk to the beach. The condo was arranged well with bedrooms on each end, a comfortable living & dining rooms. It is a bit dated as stated in other reviews, but there’s nothing inconvenient about it. The pool was clean & warm with plenty of lounge chairs. Ed was very responsive & concerned for our comfort. We’d definitely stay here again.

  • Sanibel is the place to go for beachcombing and sun in January. Ed's condo is a nice place, part of a larger complex. Very family friendly. Great pool, heated which is critical in the winter. The beach is amazing, and shells are terrific. We like this location, a bit off the beaten path. Condo is simple, and clean. Decor is a bit aged and dated, but that doesn't matter too much to us. Basics are provided, but not much laundry detergent (two loads), and limited kitchen staples other than salt and pepper. Again, we travel prepared, but is you want sugar, cream, oil, etc bring your own. Good basic beach staples are in the closet, which is useful.

  • This condo is an excellent value. It is large and roomy both bedrooms are large. They are separated by the living area. The couch was clean and comfy for watching TV. The table is huge. We were able to work a puzzle on one end and eat on the other. The kitchens is well equipped with more pans than I have. The condo is close to the pool( which is sparkling! The guest closet is loaded with beach stuff. Even a cart to haul an umbrella and chairs and cooler. There are even fishing poles and tackle. We had a wonderful stay and saw a manatee up close and personal under the bridge crossing the bayou. I recommend this condo. And I also must admit I read all the reviews before booking. So there were no surprises. We were comfortable and had a great time!

The large open plan living area has a panoramic view over San Carlos Bay where you can relax on the sofa and watch the wildlife of Sanibel Island .

Lea By The Sea's large open plan design with floor to ceiling windows affords panoramic views over San Carlos Bay where you can relax on the sofa and watch the wildlife of Sanibel Island . All bedrooms have en-suite bathrooms and private balconies. There's also a children's annexed bedroom , containing crib and child's bed , high chair is available on request . There's lots to keep the family entertained with a games room beside the pool containing ping pong and foosball , a great hangout area for the kids. There's also a beach cabana to the left of the pool complete with BBQ grill , table and chairs. You'll notice from the photos that the kitchen also has a panoramic view and leads directly out onto the main dining veranda . It has an elevator to all 3 floors. The sense you get from the house is a light, bright, airy, open and casual feeling. Wi-Fi throughout the house. Sanibel yacht club just a 5 minute cycle away, where you can hire a boat or dine at the famous Grandma Dots. There are several restaurants within easy walking distance. My property caretaker is always available to help you. Sanibel is a narrow island with the The Gulf of Mexico on one side and San Carlos Bay on the other side , forming part of the Inter Coastal Waterway. Sanibel is conected to the mainland by a 3 mile bridge.. Sanibel is unique as most of the shops , restaurants and other businesses are owner managed ; the nationwide multiples are not allowed with a few exceptions , provided they were established on the island prior to 1975 ; As a result Sanibel has low key, easygoing, personal and friendly atmosphere , where time as stood still since the mid 1970's . So in a world of constant change and hectic pace it's nice to know that the best things in life change very little. There are 3 golf courses the island, The Dunes, Beachview, and The Sanctuary. There are cycle lanes absolutely everywhere making it a great place for kids and adults to get around. Over half the island is a nature reserve and you can drive, cycle or canoe through most of it. IMPORTANT NOTICE PLEASE NOTE . One pet dog is very welcome . Fee $400 .Unfortunately cats are not allowed. There is a dedicated property manager , who will look after any issues during your stay. Sanibel has many cute shops and restaurants. The host had tips on where to eat, which we tried and they were great. On top of all this, you just can’t beat the view from...well the entire condo!

Other legends claim the Island was named by the first mate of the famous pirate Gasparilla, after his beautiful lover Sanybel, whom he had left behind in Spain. The first known appearance of a named location on the island is from a map dated from 1765. The map was labeled Puerto de S. Nibel. Furthermore, the historic lighthouse is located at Point Ybel, derived from the original name, Santa Ybel. Sanibel is the perfect backdrop for stories of pirates and buried treasure. Many colorful and interesting characters have made the island their home. the first modern settlement on Sanibel, or “Sanybel” as it was known at the time, was established by the Florida Peninsular Land Company in 1832. The colonists abandoned Sanibel just 17 years later in 1849. After the island was repopulated in 1862, permission for a lighthouse was granted. The lighthouse was not begun until 1884, but was completed just a few months later. Since that time, Sanibel has been one of the best kept secrets for vacationers lucky enough to discover it. Through conservation, care and the love of the people who live, work and visit here, the Island maintains the rustic seaside charm which has made it the gem of the Gulf for the last 100+ years.   • Dennis’s place is as advertised and worked very well for our family of five. Beach chairs, sand toys and board games were a nice touch. Excellent location on Sanibel. Easy walk to the beach and our kids enjoyed the pool too. Great nature trails nearby, bike trails are fun and market, shops and restaurants are also plentiful.   • This Sanibel Island condo is everything it was described as. It was centrally located on the island, it was sparkling clean, with everything you could need for a stay. We were only there for 4 days, but we will be back- for longer! The beach is a very short walk away, the heated pool is a few steps from the back door. We loved Sanibel Island!! Exploring on foot, bikes, and by car!! Prior to, and throughout our stay , Dennis was in communication with us, providing information, and answering questions. You’ll find all the necessary comforts of home inside the unit’s delightful interior, such as wireless internet access, air conditioning, and ceiling fans to keep you cool and relaxed. Sanibel is a narrow island with the Gulf on one side and San Carlos Bay on the other , forming part of the InterCostal Waterway. It's connected to the mainland by a 3 mile bridge.. Sanibel Island is unique since all shops , restaurants and other businesses are owner managed .It forbids the nationwide multiples, with the odd exception, if they were established on the island before 1975 . As a result the island has a low key, easygoing, personal and friendly atmosphere , where things haven't changed much since the late 1970's. So in a world of constant change and hectic pace , it's lovely to find a place that's kind and gentle on the senses, where the living is easy and things don't change that much. There are 3 golf courses on the island , The Dunes ,Beachview ,and The Sanctuary. There are cycle lanes absolutely everywhere, so it's a great place for kids. It's safe with no crime to speak of ; its the ultimate family holiday destination . Over half the island is a nature reserve and you can drive, cycle or canoe through most of it.   • Michaels place looks just like the pictures. It is spacious and bright. The unit has an excellent view of the gulf. There is a few feet of grass out the lanai before low vegetation begins so no blocked view. The location is right off the causeway so great access on/off island and to Periwinkle Ave. It was nice to have the keyless entry so keeping track of keys and being locked out wasn’t a problem. There is a fan on the lanai which makes sitting out doable even when it is very hot. We enjoyed going to CROW, the Clinic for Rehabilitation if Wildlife.

  • Perfect location! Ground floor corner unit. Walk right out to the beach! I didn’t mind washing dishes with the view of the beach out the large glass window. Bonus was there is a washer and dryer in the condo unit. I had read before that there was a shared unit in the building but this condo has its own. Beds were comfortable. The only change I’d make is upgrading the twin beds to full size or a queen and a twin. Would be much more comfortable for adults. We loved our stay and can’t wait to visit again!

    Sealoft 104 is one of nine self-contained homes found in a quiet, secluded and private area located in the middle section of the island of Sanibel.
    When entering the home, stairs with a landing bring you up into a screened-in porch that leads into the kitchen which is fully equipped with dinnerware for 12, cooking utensils and cookware, a dishwasher, garbage disposal and stackable laundry. The dining room is adjacent to the kitchen and features a rattan dining room table with glass top and padded chairs on a white tile floor. It opens up onto a screened-in deck that provides a wonderful view of lush vegetation. Off the kitchen is a spare bedroom which has a queen bed and double closets with a separate full bathroom that features a stand-up shower and vanity. The condo designated parking space is right at the elevator. Sanibel is a narrow island with the Gulf on one side and San Carlos Bay on the other , forming part of the InterCostal Waterway. It's connected to the mainland by a 3 mile bridge.. Sanibel Island is a unique since all shops , restaurants and other businesses are owner managed , it forbids the nationwide multiples, with the odd exception, provided they were established on the island before 1975 . As a result the island has a low key, easygoing, personal and friendly atmosphere , where things haven't changed much since the late 1970's. So in a world of constant change and hectic pace , it's lovely to find a place that's kind and gentle on the senses, where the living is easy and things don't change that much. There are 3 golf courses the island , The Dunes ,Beachview ,and The Sanctuary. There are cycle lanes absolutely everywhere, so it's a great place for kids.   • What a spectacular view to start! Exactly as pictured. Beautifully decorated inside to enhance the view. Well appointed kitchen. There was nothing they didn’t already have. Plenty of extra linen and helpful folded filled with tips and where everything was. You are definitely in paradise there! We took Island Taxi from the airport and rented bikes from Billy’s to get around. Both are wonderful and friendly services to use if you don’t want to rent a car like we did. So close to the beach, you can hear the ocean from inside! We left the patio door open the entire stay. We will be returning!

I had a couple questions when we arrived and they were promptly answered. Pool was perfect and clean, beach was good (bad the first couple days due to the storms, but we aren’t mad) so it was a quick drive to Captiva, liked having the covered parking and laundry in the room.   • Upon entering the condo, my teenage son let out an “Oh my god!”-we were all a little gobsmacked as the view of the Gulf was quite breathtaking. The condo was SPOTLESS when we arrived; my son has many allergies/asthma and he didn’t need any allergy medicine or his inhaler the entire time-this is a first! All the living area furniture, beds, bedding were so comfortable, we all slept well each night. The condo had more than enough amenities to make you feel right at home including a well-stocked kitchen, great beach chairs, plenty of towels, dish/laundry/body soaps, after sun lotion, hair dryer, etc. We spent a lot of time down by the pool area which was usually quiet and we often had it to ourselves. Having a covered parking space was a huge bonus since you got into a cool car no matter what time of day. My husband and son really enjoyed fishing right on the beach and hooked into some snook, redfish, ocean catfish, and a few blacktip sharks! The location of the condo is perfect, close to all the shopping on Tarpon Bay & Periwinkle roads. This was our fourth visit to the island, each year staying in a different condo, liking to change things up a bit. This was the first time we agreed that we would love to come back to this condo because it’s that perfect! Thanks for opening up your home to our family-we truly enjoyed our stay!

  • I've stayed at quite a few vacation homes and cabins and these places were what I expected them to be. Based on the photos of this home I wasn't expecting much. I told my daughter to be prepared to stay at a simple, small home. Boy was I wrong. The pictures do not do justice to this home. Surprisingly this place offers lots of space with lots of sleeping options. The master bed room offered the most comfortable mattress and soft bed sheets. The home is nicely decorated with the beach theme throughout. Even the movies and books they have all had to do with the sea. Lori thought of everything. I would say the kitchen supplies are at the high end and she has everything you need to make a meal. We took advantage of all her amenities including the hot tub, kayaks and fishing rods. We were able to see the manatees and even a dolphin right off the dock. That was definitely the highlight of my daughter's trip. I personally just loved sitting in the backyard near the pier listening to the fish jumping out of the water. The only thing we hated about this place was having to leave it. I really regret having booked this place for only three nights. We definitely plan to return and stay for a longer period. Thanks Lori for all your help and for sharing your beautiful place with us.

Bathrooms were a little bit small for our liking, but the rest of the place was a good size. Great proximity to one of the least crowded and best beaches on the island. It’s right on the paved bike trail that circles the island, so we started each day of the week bicycling to breakfast at OEC. If you’re not into biking everywhere, everything you need is within a 5 minute drive, including excellent dining, a general store, a small cinema, and a liquor store. We didn’t go off of the island at all. Would definitely stay again.

  • We had a really nice stay at Shah's place. Wonderful location, away from the hubbub of Sanibel and adjacent to a really great beach. It is really one of the very well oriented units relative to views and sunshine and privacy and air flow. Everything was very comfortable and the management was very responsive if we had any questions. It is very quiet in the evenings too. I really enjoyed it.

  • Pleasant place to stay. Reviews were very helpful and accurate. The unit had everything you would really need for your stay. Kitchen was well equipped for cooking, serving and storing food during the week. Deck was screened in but unfortunately does not keep the sand flies out due to their small size. Bug spray available at the clubhouse if needed. Coolers were available in the laundry. Beach toys, umbrella, cart and beach chairs available in the unit. We even were able to use the kayak from the clubhouse one morning and came very close to a family of manatee's in the river at the boardwalk. Our kids loved walking around during the day watching and catching lizards and putting their headlamps on at night looking for large toads around the complex. We even saw a tortoise along the walking path to the beach! The walk to the beach only takes minutes and there were plenty of shells everywhere if you enjoy searching or colleting them. If you have time and a vehicle it was worth it driving to captiva just down the road and the downtown area was very busy on the weekend. Would recommend to friends/family and would stay again in back in the area. Thanks, Shah!

  • Great location with a private beach entrance, beach chairs and umbrella included (along with a rolling cart thing that made the easy walk easier), plenty of silverware and cups and cooking utensils. The space in the apartment was much larger than anticipated. My wife and I had an amazing time here and really couldn’t think of a single thing to complain about. Might be back next year with a baby(Plenty of room)! Ha! Had a perfect week! Highly recommend! We’ll be back for sure 😊

    This is the way Sanibel used to be. A small cottage-condo complex of just 9 units on the beach side. #3 has one of the better views, facing out towards the Gulf of Mexico. Comes fully equipped. Just step out onto the sand, short stroll to the water..and enjoy.
    Beach cottage vibe---comes fully equipped with all linens and towels, beach chairs, umbrellas, two flat screens, wi-fi, fully equipped kitchen. Soaps, trash bags, t-paper, paper towels included. Heat, AC, ceiling fans. Just redecorated with all new furniture, queen bed, full sofa bed, artwork.
    West Gulf Drive area of Sanibel--considered to be the best area on the island. No high-rises, no commercial activity nearby. Very quiet area but convenient to the entire island. Bike paths thru-out entire island. Ding Darling, rec center, Shell Museum, shops, restaurants, galleries all within a 5 minute drive or a 10 minute bike ride.

  • Great location for long walks in both directions and the shelling was awesome. It is so nice and close to the water. You can see the water from the screened in porch. The cottage is equipped with everything you need. There were lots of towels in the bathroom. Although it is small there are lots of hooks, plenty of shelves and closet space. Loved how the bathroom, though smaller has lots of shelves. The cottage is perfect for one or two, but even when I had visitors with 4 of us we managed well with the pull out sofa and shared all the closet and shelf space. There are plenty of blankets and pillows. I even did a 500 piece puzzle on the coffee table. Hope to go back next year. Love Sanibel and I loved this location!!

    I am located within South Seas Resort in the Bayside Villas development. My unit is directly waterfront on the 2nd story of the Bayside Villas 5000 building. This is the building directly on the water, unlike the 4000 building. My unit is less than a three minute walk to the beach, 30 second drive to downtown Captiva, and 5 minute drive to the North Pointe at South Seas.
  • Palmer made the check-in process as easy as possible. All info was provided and he answered any questions I had right away. Great, clean apartment in a perfect vacation spot. Short walk (or drive, if you prefer) to the beach, nice Tommy Bahama chairs are provided. Short 5-7 min walk to restaurants, shops and a convenience store. Only note is that the bedroom is located next to the elevator, so depending on the time / day it may be a little noisy if you're a light sleeper. The rest of the apartment was quiet and private. I recommend!

  • Palmer’s place was the perfect getaway spot! We had never been to Captiva & fell absolutely in live with the town. His place is walking distance to great restaurants, amenities & the beach. (We were actually shocked at how close the beach was!) The pool area was immaculate & the entire place was quite peaceful. Palmer was incredibly quick to communicate & help us when we needed it! The added bonus of having a few beach chairs and an umbrella each day was fantastic. 10/10 recommend and will visit again!

  • We had a great time staying here! David's tips and recommendations were very helpful and worth checking out!! The room was very comfortable. The kitchen was well stocked. We loved the swimming pool! We definitely recommend shelling at low tide at Bowman Beach. We came home with 5 large intact conch shells! (Had to dive for them...). There are many delicious restaurants and shops near by. If you have the means and know how, we would recommend renting a pontoon boat at Jaspers in Captiva. It was a fantastic trip! The cottage from Leslie and Jim, both great people, completely convinced us. In my "AirBnB career" I have not seen many great objects like L&J's, and I can say that I have been in many. Great is the privacy just 3 minutes walk from a wonderful beach. The place on Sanibel is dreamy and very personal. A wonderful area. We didn't implement much of Leslie's tips, but we didn't miss the sunset from Causeway Bridge to Fort Myers. If you book this cottage, nothing will be missing. An oasis of relaxation and nature.

  • Sometimes, you hesitate to tell others what you think of an accommodation, because you would like to keep it for yourself. That is the feeling we had, when we thought of leaving an impression of this fantastic beach house on Sanibel Island. We spent 5 days as two adult couples in this house, which at first appearance looks small but has all facilities you need. The house is abundantly stocked with all essential supplies as well as things you want to take with you to the beach. Speaking of which, the beach is but a five minute walk away. Imagine pelicans flying overhead, ospreys hunting, dolphins swimming close by, sunshine and cooling winds. There are bikes which can take you to the shops, other beaches and restaurants. The extra touches such as beach toys, umbrella and chairs were so nice. Our family of 4 was very comfortable and had plenty of room. The kitchen was stocked with everything you could need.   • We loved our stay in Sanibel. Sand Pointe 213 was perfect for so many reasons. The condo was both extremely clean and very stylishly decorated. It was clear that the owners take a great deal of pride in their Sanibel get-away. The condo had everything we could possibly need from dishes and utensils to sand toys/beach towels/beach chairs. Additionally, we loved the location on the island. We could walk to the general store for misc needs (sunscreen! :-)) and biked everywhere else on the island. We biked with our kids (ages 10 & 12) to the wildlife refuge, the marina, the lighthouse, restaurants and the book store. The time on the beach and at the pool were priceless. Our evening sunset walks were so enjoyable. I would highly recommend Sand Pointe 213 to anyone looking for a Sanibel get-away.

With no traffic lights, neon or high-rises, Sanibel has an authentic old-world Island charm. It is unlike anything else in The United States and a Sanibel Island vacation is a dream. The Sanibel-Captiva Barrier Islands are a relatively new geological feature. It was formed within the last 6,000 years – a geological blink of an eye. The islands formed as a result of siltation and accretion, as sand was pushed onto the bedrock forming the sea floor at the edge of the mainland. Nearly half of the 12,000-acre island is designated for conservation and preservation. This is most notably in the form of the J.N. “Ding” Darling Wildlife Sanctuary, which is the largest undeveloped mangrove sanctuary in the United States. Sanibel Island has been continuously inhabited since at least 500 B.C.E, first by the Calusa Indians, then by European settlers after it was first “discovered” by Ponce De Leon in 1513. Legend has it that Ponce De Leon named the Island “Santa Isabella” after Queen Isabel while searching for the “Fountain of Youth.” In 1523, after two years attempting to establish a permanent colony, and searching in vain for the secret of eternal youth, Ponce de Leon was struck by an arrow and gravely injured in a battle with a Calusa raiding party. The Spaniards abandoned their colony in defeat and retreated to Cuba, where De Leon died from his wounds. Other legends claim the Island was named by the first mate of the famous pirate Gasparilla, after his beautiful lover Sanybel, whom he had left behind in Spain. The first known appearance of a named location on the island is from a map dated from 1765. The map was labeled Puerto de S. Nibel. Furthermore, the historic lighthouse is located at Point Ybel, derived from the original name, Santa Ybel. Sanibel is the perfect backdrop for stories of pirates and buried treasure. Many colorful and interesting characters have made the island their home. the first modern settlement on Sanibel, or “Sanybel” as it was known at the time, was established by the Florida Peninsular Land Company in 1832. The colonists abandoned Sanibel just 17 years later in 1849. After the island was repopulated in 1862, permission for a lighthouse was granted. The lighthouse was not begun until 1884, but was completed just a few months later. Since that time, Sanibel has been one of the best kept secrets for vacationers lucky enough to discover it. Through conservation, care and the love of the people who live, work and visit here, the Island maintains the rustic seaside charm which has made it the gem of the Gulf for the last 100+ years. Modern Day Sanibel Island hasn’t changed much. There are no traffic lights, and one main road. In addition, boutique shops and restaurants are alive with character. People are friendly, and it is one of the safest cities in America. Perfect for families, and pets are welcome at many hotels, condos and beaches. Furthermore, warm, sunny days are the norm, and the beaches are never crowded. The water is warm and calm, and the bottom is soft. Half of the island is conservation lands or sanctuaries. The Island also has activities for everyone. You can spend the day fishing, snorkeling or swimming. Collect shells from the beach or sunbathe. Go hiking, bike riding or kayaking.
