Peaceful Lakeside Cabin - No Neighbours

Me and my Boyfriend had a lovely time at Mike and Rosa's cabin! It was an amazing experience as they even left us little personalised gifts for our anniversary. The cabin is beautiful and the lake is even prettier! We saw a beaver, loon and herons on the lake and enjoyed their beautiful waterfront firepit.

Such a beautifully and thoughtfully designed cabin and surrounding property. We loved the attention to details in all the spaces, including the use of European style windows and doors, it made us feel completely transported to another world, like we were staying at a cabin in Estonia! Amanda was so friendly and responsive when we had questions and provided so many great local recommendations to do in the area. Would recommend for anyone looking for an extra special stay and for people who appreciate well-designed spaces!

The Aurie, modern cabin.

Tracey’s brand new tiny house is big on amenities and comfort. Nestled in the woods with huge windows looking out onto treetops, this peaceful home is a sanctuary for writers, bird enthusiasts, solo travellers, couples, and those looking for something unique in a quiet rural area. In a 7-minute period, I picked up 23 birds on Merlin, and was greeted by yellow warblers in the nearby shrubs as I walked around. A young rabbit grazed every evening near the house. Tracey is welcoming and quick to respond to queries, and she has thought of so many details. There is a well-stocked kitchen, comfortable bed in a cozy room with attached balcony- a great selection of reading material, puzzles, amazing art everywhere you look. Finding enough reading lights or places to curl up with a book in a rental is a challenge sometimes. Not here, as Tracey has created spaces that beckon you to relax. We highly recommend this spotless, private, modern retreat for your next getaway!

Modern Riverside Cottage on edge of Algonquin

NataliaRating, 5 stars7 months ago
Loved our stay at River Vista! The attention to detail was what makes this cottage luxury: from beautiful live plants, to plenty of convenient storage, comfy beds and a giant couch perfect for enjoying the forest view, playing board games or snuggling with a book. Loved walking to the falls, as well as just watching the river flow. The private mini hike was a cool surprise too. Last but not least, Natasha and Matt are responsive and helpful - thank you! We can’t wait to return in the summer so we can float, paddle board and canoe 🛶.

Your guide to Ottawa River

All About Ottawa River

With headwaters in the Laurentian Mountains, the Ottawa River in Canada winds its way south, forming a natural border between the territories of Ontario and Quebec. Extending 745 miles in total, this waterway is Canada’s eighth largest river, with enormous historical and cultural value to the cities and provinces along its route.

The Ottawa River runs through 26 national and provincial parks and serves as a recreation resource for the cities it flows through, which include Montreal and the Canadian capital of Ottawa. With over 85 species of fish in the upper and lower portions of the river, including smallmouth bass, the predatory muskellunge, and rainbow trout, fishing this river is a favorite pastime. If you’re staying near the river, take advantage of the angling, whitewater rafting, and kayaking opportunities on the water or merely walk or cycle along its banks.

The best time to stay in a vacation rental in Ottawa River

One of the best times of the year to book cottage rentals near the Ottawa River is between May and September, when the water is warm enough to enjoy rafting and swimming. In both spring and autumn, the very cool temperatures and rain make the river less accessible for outdoor activity. But in winter, when Ottawa is covered in snow and freezing temperatures, stretches of the river freeze over, and experienced guides can help you find a safe spot to do some ice-fishing.

Top things to do in Ottawa River

Rideau Canal

The 125-mile Rideau Canal was built in Ottawa as a commercial waterway between Lake Ontario and the Ottawa River. The canal became more of a site for boating and leisure activities in the 20th century. In 2007, this stone-walled canal became an UNESCO World Heritage site in recognition of its value as the oldest continuously operated canal system in North America. The best time to visit the Rideau Canal is during winter, when it freezes over and becomes the world’s largest ice-skating rink.

Ottawa River Provincial Park

The Ottawa River is one of the biggest whitewater rafting destinations in Canada. Some of the best spots to raft are along a section of river within Ottawa River Provincial Park, just outside the town of Foresters Falls, a 90-minute drive northwest of the city of Ottawa. Here, you’ll find both gentle courses and thrilling class IV and V rapids.

Voyageur Provincial Park

To see a gentler side of the powerful Ottawa River, head to Voyageur Provincial Park, one hour west of central Montreal. This 3,600-acre park, on the Ontario side of the river, is adjacent to the Carillon Dam, which transformed the upstream waters from rocky, perilous rapids into a placid reservoir. You’ll find swimming spots and two boat launches in the park, as well as canoe rentals.
