Annemarie and Chris’ place was so beautiful, truly heavenly. The kayaks were a great adventure for our girls! The artistic details and decor were incredible. Coffee was 🙌🏻. Will be back.

Lovely 2 bedroom apartment with harbour views

MelRating, 5 stars2 months ago
We loved the spacious apartment with great views over the harbour. The whole living area was well furnished and comfortable with a great room for watching TV in the evenings. We love cooking and using the well equipped kitchen was great. The master bedroom was beautiful and also had great views over the harbour. Being up so high and private, we slept with the curtains open one evening as a storm rolled through. The carport too was an added bonus. We recommend this place if you have a car. I'd hate to have to walk up this steep street on foot everyday if you didn't have a car.

Relax in style with sea views @ Sea-Renity

CatherineRating, 5 stars2 months ago
A compact apartment that packed in everything we needed. Full kitchen, comfortable seating with views across town to sea from large picture window, great bed (also with views to sea), handy storage alcoves for clothes and suitcases, shower with plentiful hot water, and - the nicest surprise - a great size deck with bbq. There's no full photo of deck so we worried it might be tiny but loved it and the views to sea and mountains. It is overlooked by the picture window of the rear unit, this was never a problem and we used it often as weather was great. Short walk to town (we dont drive), handy supermarket and host's cafe and bar recommendations. Just one design flaw; the L-shape breakfast bar fits 2 stools under but only one human when you pull out the stools! It was a pity not to have comfortable dining space when evenings got cooler and we ate indoors. Overall an excellent choice and great value for Picton.

Number 4 on The Moorings

SonjaRating, 5 stars1 month ago
We recently stayed in Picton, New Zealand, and had a truly wonderful experience. Our host, Carolyn, was absolutely lovely—welcoming, helpful, and made us feel right at home from the moment we arrived. The accommodation was comfortable, clean, and perfectly located to explore the beauty of Picton and the Marlborough Sounds. Carolyn went above and beyond to ensure our stay was enjoyable, and we’re so grateful for her hospitality. We would happily stay here again and highly recommend it to anyone visiting the area!

Absolutely perfect property and location. Extremely well presented and very peaceful. Megan is an excellent host, very helpful and kind. Megan let us borrow her kayaks & helped us with them. She also brought baked treats for us to try. We wished we could have stayed longer.

Endeavour View - Rayner Cabin

SurajRating, 5 stars1 month ago
Jayne and William were warm and friendly and really took care of us. Right from the time of booking till the time they loaded up our luggage on the shuttle. Jayne was very proactive in giving us clear directions to find the place. she was very responsive while we were enroute to the cabin. The cabin itself is cozy, clean and well maintained. The basic amenities will be pretty much everything you require - a stove, compost toilet, and shower. We regret that we couldn't spend more time there and had to move on to our next post on the Queen Charlotte track. The location is spectacular and very close to the water so a quick dip or a kayak would be lovely in this place. All in all, a very pleasant time in a lovely place with wonderful people. Would recommend!

Your guide to Picton

All About Picton

Set around a deep natural harbor in the heart of the Marlborough Sound, Picton is a small town on the north coast of New Zealand’s South Island. Many people pass through Picton as they travel between the North and South Islands, but the community itself is worth a visit. If you wander along the scenic harborside, you’ll discover attractive grounds and palm trees lining Picton Memorial Park while rows of light-wooden homes climb the surrounding green hills. Cafes, restaurants, bars, and shops line High Street, which reaches its end at the War Memorial arch near the shore.

Picton offers trails through luxuriant native forests, including the four-mile Tirohanga Track that will take you to the summit of Mount Pirongia for views of the town and sparkling harbor. On a clear day, you can see as far as the big mountains of Taranaki and Ruapehu far away in the North Island. You can also explore the Marlborough region by hiking all or part of the Queen Charlotte Track, with views of the Pacific. If you hop in a boat or kayak, you’ll discover miles of pristine coastline, where dolphins leap and clear waters lap secluded bays. As part of the Marlborough Wine Region, you can also visit passionate vintners and enjoy delectable meals at winery restaurants.

The best time to stay in a vacation rental in Picton

The best months to spend time in Picton are December through March, when summer temperatures are comfortable for hitting the trails or visiting vineyards. It rarely drops below freezing here, even in winter, but you could encounter wet, cloudy, and windy weather, so it’s wise to pack layers. A highlight of the summer season is the Picton Maritime Festival later in January, when live bands, family entertainment, and food stalls fill the town.

In late February, the area is busy during a popular food and wine festival in the winelands between Picton and Blenheim. Many top wine producers share their wares for tasting, and the selection of food and local produce will make your mouth water. A line-up of live bands sets the scene.

Top things to do in Picton

Marlborough Flyer

The Marlborough Flyer is a heritage steam train that brings back impressions of a bygone era. Informative conductors share stories of the train and the landscape through which it passes. There are return day trips to Blenheim and Seddon via a historic bridge with breathtaking views of the Awatere Valley. There’s also a day trip to Kekerengu that includes time to sample the region’s famous food and wine.

Picton Heritage & Whaling Museum

To learn more about Picton’s history, you can visit the community’s Heritage & Whaling Museum. A substantial collection of records and artifacts dating back to the 1700s tells a part of this area’s story, from the Te Ātiawa tribe to early European families. A fascinating section centers on the whaling industry, which dominated the coast in the 19th century. You can discover what it was like to be a whaler and learn about the natural history of the Marlborough Sounds.

Marlborough Sounds

The azure waters of river valleys extend outwards from Picton in both directions, framed by forested headlands. There are plenty of opportunities to get out on the water, whether you’re looking for wildlife from a guided tour — orcas and bottlenose dolphins are common sights here — or kayaking around hidden coves. When you’re ready to refuel, the town’s eateries are a ready source of local greenshell mussels.
