This is open during certain times of year and for a small entrance fee can explore what is left of the inside of the ruins. The dungeon is worth a visit with it’s medieval grafitti. You can still enjoy a stroll any time of year and enjoy the ruins. Get some fish and chips from Drakes in the market place and sit on a bench whilst you take in the famous viaduct view over the River Nidd. You can walk from the castle down to the waterside and vice versa. There is car parking at the castle which is great for exploring the whole town and also a museum

Top pick for Brunch This is a great place to visit. They have some pigs you can feed and other farm animals. They have hundreds of free-range chickens, hence their name and they make the most delicious food. We love to go for Brunch or coffee and cake (the breakfast burger and truffled parmesan hash browns are divine). They cater well for children but also a great place to go without little people. There is also a lovely farm shop on site too. Have a look on their website as they often do special events where guest chefs come and do a one-off dining experience.

Top pick for dog/family friendly café If you want somewhere that is truly dog friendly then this is the place to go. Whilst many places allow dogs in Knaresborough, sometimes, they are not as dog friendly if your pooch decides to cause a bit of mischief. They do a selection of lovely lunchtime café style food. Being on the waterside you can take in the gorgeous views of the river Nidd and the famous viaduct. Top pick for indulgence and nostalgia No trip to the area would be complete without a visit to the famous Bettys Tea Rooms. The Harrogate café is the original and even if you don’t visit the café go and see it as it really is a beautiful Victorian building. Their window displays are always impressive especially at Easter and Christmas. There is often a queue (promise it is worth it) but you can always get something from the shop which they have at both sites. Our faily fave is a Yorkshire Fat Rascal – pop in the oven for 15 mins and serve warm with butter. Delicious! The Harlow Carr Bettys is adjoined to the gardens discussed above.

Top pick for Indian This is a really unassuming restaurant in Starbeck (between Knaresborough and Harrogate so great as can always get a parking spot). It is non-pretentious so if you just want to go as you are, then you won’t feel out of place. Dispute its unassuming appearance, the food is delicious.
