Places to stay in Saint Bathans
A beautiful fully self contained 2 bedroom holiday home in the charming historic village of St Bathans, Central Otago. Built using the traditional method of mud brick with 2 bedrooms (double beds) and a sofa in the lounge that converts to a double bed. A warm and cosy little home with all modern amenities. Ideal for Rail trail riders, families, or a quiet romantic get away from the maddening crowds.
We have created a beautifully appointed cosy cottage to escape the rigours of city life and in keeping with the historical location we used the traditional construction of mud bricks giving the place a vintage look but with all modern amenities inside. The cottage is warm and cosy in the winter and cool in the summer.
St Bathans is in a New Zealand registered Heritage area. The village was once a bustling gold mining town and the Blue Lake was formed when the gold mining ceased. There are many old ruins and interesting historical features that make this little place fascinating. The lake is lovely to swim in during the summer, ideal for kayaking or paddle boarding, and the Otago Rail Trail is nearby. Bicycles can be hired in Omakau (30 minutes away) if you want to ride the trail. the local hotel is the very beautiful Vulcan Hotel which has a bar and restaurant (bookings essential). There is a well appointed little supermarket in Omakau for supplies. The nearest large towns are Ranfurly and Alexandra, and many smaller villages such as Naseby, Oturehua, Opha, Omakau, and Clyde to explore. Queenstown is just 1.5 hours away by car.

  • We had a great stay at Alison’s cottage. It was clean and comfortable.

  • This is a great space to stay in at St Bathans; quiet, well appointed and with a wonderful view from the bedroom windows. Alison was great to deal with and we had no problems at all. The ability to walk from the cottage to the lake and the hotel was a bonus.

  • I would totally recommend the Old Orchard Cottage. From its charming ambience and attention to detail to the inspiring environment of St Bathans, the cottage is ideally positioned to help you step out of the rat race. I had a fantastic time.

  • We had a fantastic stay at the cottage. It was perfect for us for the night. St Bathans is a very cute township and well worth the visit!

  • This is an extra special house in a great locality. Wonderful local walks, full of history. We self-catered (which was important as the only amenity at St Bathans is the wonderful old hotel). A great base to explore other areas including some mountain biking at Naseby and parts of the rail trail. A wonderful photo album at the house which shows it's construction from adobe bricks.

  • Loved staying here, house was cute, clean and super cosy, also very well situated. We were here in Autumn and the area is great this time of year. Looking forward to another visit.

An historic mud brick cottage that has been sensitively restored to befit its pioneer heritage. Timber lined throughout and fitted with an open fireplace, the ambience is warm and cosy. The ceiling is macrocapa, one of New Zealand's most eco-friendly timbers. The cottage consists of a large studio-type room with queen bed (extra bed available), comfortable vintage lounge, dining furniture, kitchenette and a separate ensuite bathroom with wet area shower and deep claw foot bath. The kitchenette includes a benchtop oven, toaster, fridge, complimentary tea/coffee facilities. Plus a gas BBQ outside on the veranda. Why not search utube for Coombes Cottage to see an informative video.
We are only a stone's throw from some wonderful local amenities. The tiny historic township of St Bathans is 7 km away with its legendary pub and Blue Lake. There is a walking track around the lake. We are in easy distance of Hayes Engineering at Oturehua, The Poolburn Dam and the Otago Central Bike Trail.
  • Lorna and David were fantastic hosts and gave us great recommendations for places to go. Recommend you come with whatever food and drinks you need, it is quite a drive to the nearest shops (as Lorna and David do point out in the description). To be clear though this in no way detracted from our stay and we had a very relaxing weekend looking out at amazing views. We 100% recommend them. Thanks again!

A cabin on a hillside made of gold in historic Bendigo, the best-kept secret in Central Otago. Surrounded by vineyards on a rustic landscape steeped in gold mining history. We're 30 minutes from Wanaka, 50 from Queenstown airport, at the heart of everything that makes Central Otago so beautiful and unique. There's much to explore from walks to wineries. Pour yourself a glass of vino, soak in the outdoor tub and be awed by the panoramic views and the starry night sky, you'll never want to leave.
The cabin sleeps two guests comfortably in a Queen bed, with a full en-suite, kitchenette, wood burner and modern furnishings. The cabin has sliding doors that open out onto your decks that look over the panoramic surrounding views. On the bottom deck there is a sunken outdoor bath for you to soak all your worries away in. The night sky is something wonderful to behold here away from light pollution and if you're lucky you may even glimpse the magical Southern Lights in all their glory. The cabin is architecturally designed to have a small environmental footprint and sit in harmony with the natural landscape. It is perched high on a rocky outcrop at the foothills of the Dunstan Ranges, overlooking the expansive Clutha Basin with its pastoral scenes and enclosed on all sides by dramatic alpine mountain ranges. Your only neighbours are the surrounding vineyards in their ever-changing colours and the resident birdlife. Step inside and you will have all the comforts to help you forget your worries and slip into relaxation mode. The cabin is furnished to a high quality and all essentials are provided for. We are just a phone call away should you have any special requirements. A small kitchenette is provided for basic cold food preparation. It is not permitted to cook in the cabin for the comfort of all guests. You will find a toaster and kettle and a light breakfast, tea, and coffee are provided on arrival. We encourage guests to try one of the local restaurants for lunch or dinner - you will find a curated selection of our favourite spots in the cabins guidebook to help you to choose! There is a general store and cafe in Tarras 10mins away and a supermarket 15mins away in Cromwell for supplies also.
Bendigo is located at the top of Lake Dunstan, in the heart of Central Otago... We are in the middle of nowhere and at the centre of everything! The area has a rich history of pioneer gold mining and merino farming and is best known today as one of the finest Pinot Noir producing regions in the Central Otago. The site is scattered with windswept Kanuka and ancient rock formations that lend the landscape a unique raw beauty. You will probably not want to leave the cabin, but if you do, Bendigo has a variety of activities for everyone. From scenic walks through the vineyards and hills straight from your cabin doorstep to the fascinating mining ruins of Bendigo a short 5 min drive down the road as well as beautiful swimming and fishing spots of the Clutha River and Lake Dunstan a stone's throw. The Tarras Golf Club is a must for anyone keen to try their hand at golf at its most chilled out-think sheep on the fairways! Bendigo also serves as a great base to explore everything else Central Otago has to offer. Want to get out for an hour or two? 15 minutes away in Cromwell, the Cromwell Old Town Area is a lovely spot to grab a coffee and check out the local art scene at small galleries there. It also plays host to an artisan food and craft market most weekends where you can try all the amazing local produce. Cromwell is the stone fruit mecca of New Zealand and if you are lucky enough to be here during the right season you may end up with a Cherry addiction! 5 minutes further down the road is Bannockburn, a striking wine region where you can indulge in an afternoon of wine tasting at a number of great wineries. For a half-day trip we suggest driving through the shear sided Dunstan Gorge to reach the small historic town of Clyde that has an impressive dam, a boutique cinema, and a selection of shops and restaurants. You can hire a bike and cycle part of the world-famous Central Otago Rail Trail as it follows the Clutha river toward Alexandra. If you carry on past Clyde toward the Manuherikia Valley you will be greeted with wide open landscapes, made famous by the New Zealand Landscape painter Graham Sydney. The area is has a number of traditional small-town pubs where you can stop for a meal and a handle and get a chance to meet some proper southern folk. For the adventurous (and 4WD capable) the Thompson's Gorge Track will bring you back over the Dunstan Range directly to Bendigo (via a bumpy high country track!) Further afield - a full day outing can get you anywhere from a hot spring in Tekapo, a bush walk at Mt Cook National Park or skiing in Wanaka or Queenstown. The options are endless!
  • What an amazing place to stay. Quiet, secluded and unique. In the hills beside vineyards.A very special place.

  • 2nd time we have been there and it did not disappoint. The perfect relaxation and little get away. We used the bath loads and loved waking up In the clouds! Definitely worth booking 3 months in advance.

  • Heaven in earth for anyone who loves to stay at remote locations! The cabin is thoroughly and exquisitely equiped. We absolutely loved it.

  • A dream - this was our favorite stay on our trip. Very relaxing and an amazing view.

    susan2020-02-24T00:00:00Z
  • Absolutely wonderful place to stay and we wish we had more time there. The views are breathtaking; we could have spent days sitting on the patio and gazing out at the valley below. Soaking in the outdoor tub as the sun set and the stars lit up made it feel like all was right with the world. I am certain that this will be one of my happy places that I can recall when I want to find peace. I may sound like I’m exaggerating, but I promise you I’m not; this cabin was remarkable and provided such a deep sense of rest and peace for us.

    Jacob2020-02-22T00:00:00Z
  • If you want a perfect mix of off-the-grid relaxation and scenic daytrips, the Dunstan cabin is the perfect spot. It's tiny and has the basics of everything you need — plus THAT bath. After a warm welcome by Harry the huntaway, we were blown away by the stunning view at the top of the stairs. The cosy cabin can get quite warm on a summer day but airs out rapidly in the evening breeze. Super comfortable bed, almost too comfortable because we ended up sleeping in most mornings! There's also plenty of storage for luggage. Wanaka is within easy distance, and we daytripped to Aoraki/Mt Cook National Park via the Clay Cliffs of Omarama (super cool) as well. The Cromwell Sunday market and Cloudy Bay Shed are also a must! Thanks Richie and Cynarra for making our honeymoon a memorable one (:

A warm and cosy strawbale home built of natural materials, located in the middle of the rail trail. Beautiful outlook to the mountains and countryside. A few minutes walk to the village centre with store and hotel.
Natural features of stone fireplace, earth and lime plastered walls and timber beams. An author's residence, The Strawbale house has a warm cosy interior, filled with books, NZ Art and retro treasures.
Big open sky, mountains and rocky tors. Historic pub and general store a 5 minute walk down the road. Hayes Engineering museum, a 2min drive or 15min walk or 5min cycle. Oturehua is located half way on the Otago Rail Trail and is a perfect spot to situate yourself to explore the Central Otago area. The most interesting portion of the Rail Trail is located between Oturehua and Omakau. If you are not doing the whole Rail Trail, perhaps consider doing a day cycle trip and explore the historic rail tunnels and bridges. A cycle hire and pick up service can be arranged at an additional cost.
  • This place is simply amazing. Full of character, quirky, warm and welcoming - just unique. You will not want to leave - we wished we had allowed much more time to enjoy this enchanting little paradise.

  • My favourite house stay. Very cosy home with very comfortable living space with lovely views. Home made bread and fresh eggs, a bath with a view and wonderful art on the walls and scattered about the place. Also piano, which is great when one of your group plays well! It made me want to build my own house made of straw.......

  • Jillian had all the qualities and more that we as guests and hosts ourselves look for when we book Airbnb. She was above and beyond helpful, interesting, friendly and just plain amazing. This is a place you won't come across every day and we were sorry to leave. We recommend this special piece of paradise to all travellers interested in art, literature, rural ambience and a taste of alternative lifestyle. Perfect.

  • This place is magic. Loved it.very organic and super comfy beds

    Meadow2019-02-24T00:00:00Z
  • Our family had a wonderful stay at Jillian’s strawbale house. The space is full of character with amazing artworks and books, the most tranquil bath ever (make sure you time your soak with the sunset - bliss) and all of the bits and pieces you could possibly need. The setting is incredibly peaceful and homey, which made for such a relaxing couple of days - sorely needed after a relatively rough year! Jillian was really hospitable and friendly and made sure we had everything we needed/wanted. She had great tips for us to explore the area and was really accommodating, going out of her way to organise things like a portacot for us. There are a couple of great little walks nearby if you are hanging around for a bit, including one on the opposite side of the creek bordering the house. The publican at the Railway Hotel a short walk down the road is incredibly friendly, the food is delicious and good value too. Oturehua is a fab base for exploring the Maniototo; villages like Saint Bathans, Naseby, and Ophir (home to Pitches - possibly one of the best cafes I’ve been to in NZ) are within 20/30 minutes by car, while the wineries of the Cromwell/Alex/Bannockburn area are just a wee bit further. We felt really privileged to have stayed in a house made with so much thought and care, and I am especially jealous of Jillian’s writing hut! We thoroughly enjoyed our time here. Thanks so much, Jillian.

  • Such a wonderful experience, in a great part of New Zealand. A must is to read about the build in Jillian’s book (at the house). A special place.

    Amanda2019-01-05T00:00:00Z
  • Small town and unique eclectic house. Very welcoming. Good pub just up the street. Amazing views from the balcony and nice wood fired stove to keep the house warm on cold nights.

    Robert2018-11-11T00:00:00Z
  • Jillian's house is ideally located for riding the Rail Trail. Her house accommodated our group of five with ease. We were so appreciated the wonderful fire, and the drying rack for our wet clothes, and cold bodies. The beds were super comfy, and we all slept well. We enjoyed a pleasant meal at the Oturehua pub, a short walk down the road, and Jillian left us plenty of provisions for breakfast. This is not a 5 star hotel - Jillian's home is a space for curling up with a good book, and relaxing.

Lauder is a small settlement in the Otago Region of the South Island of New Zealand. It is located in Central Otago, 8 km northeast of Omakau, on the main route between Alexandra and Ranfurly on State Highway 85. The settlement was named after the town of the same name in southern Scotland, one of many Otago sites to be named after places in the Scottish borders by John Turnbull Thomson. Lauder had a station on the former Otago Central Railway and served as a railway servicing town from the time the rails reached the town in 1904. It remains a popular stopover on the Otago Central Rail Trail. Lauder is the closest settlement to the Poolburn Gorge, a popular sight on the rail trail. The local Lauder Hotel within walking distance is perfect for an evening meal serving wonderful food sourced locally. The Stationside Cafe serves a selection of tasty goodies throughout the day including coffee, ice creams etc.

  • Absolutely beautiful spot in Tarras. The property is gorgeous and the cabin itself is exactly as described, charming and rustic. Beautifully done and the bed is super comfortable. An added luxury bonus is the hot tub which is private and secluded... amazing night sky and so peaceful and relaxing. Great place to have your dogs with you too... my two pups loved it! Rabbits and river time and other dogs to play with... pretty much heaven in my books! The fishing is great down at the river too, only a few minutes walk :) thanks Nancy! Couldn't have asked for a better host or place to stay. Highly recommend, my only thought is I wish we had time to stay an extra night or two :)

Located on the plains of the Maniototo and with access to the Otago Rail Trail, our house is an historic farmstead, built in the 1880s. We have lovingly refurbished the house, retaining the character of its past while incorporating the needs of the modern age. This listing is for our spacious 'Whero Room' with private ensuite. Please check out our other listing 'Taradale Homestead - Kākāriki Room' if you need the additional room. It, too, has two beds and access nearby to a private bathroom.
The Whero Room is furbished with two very comfortable king single beds and has a large private ensuite. You'll also enjoy cozy electric blankets, TV (freeview and Netflix channels) and expansive views of the beautiful Ida Valley from every window. Northwest facing, the room gets maximum sun. The bedroom leads on to a sun porch and outdoor area with table, chairs and sun umbrella.
Big skies (perfect for stargazing), beautiful mountain ranges, and 360-degree views. Not another house in sight. Oturehua village is a 10-minute drive away. 15 minutes to Ophir and Omakau 30mins to Alexandra 1.5 hours to Queenstown 2 hours to Dunedin
  • We loved Tarradale Homestead. The scenery getting to and around it is spectacular. It’s calm and peaceful there, yet there’s still things to see and do in the area. Paula and Steve were superb hosts. Every little detail was taken care of - tea, coffee, bikkies, cold water by the entrance to the bedroom. Our own space to sit out on the terrace in the sunshine. An extraordinary big bathroom with shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, huge huggy bath towels. And very comfy beds. Their knowledge of the area was extensive and their love of living there evident. They shared their knowledge willingly. Each day they provided an appetising breakfast which we loved. And we paid to have an evening meal prepared by them on the first night. It was homemade, delicious and amazing value. We would have no hesitation in recommending Tarradale to others. And if we return to the area, we would stay there again. Paula and Steve made a big contribution to our wonderful stay in Central Otago.

  • It’s a rare and precious thing when Life conspires to provide exactly the circumstances required to move ahead with a project or a plan, and especially so when it delivers unexpected connections. Our stay at Taradale Homestead was designed around a personal pilgrimage to ancestral ground in the Ida Valley. Not only was the accommodation perfectly located and comfortable, Paula and Steve offered more than exceptional hospitality; they cheerfully went out of their way to help us locate places we wished to visit and introduce us to local contacts keen to share information. It was a wonderful visit, and it was fun. Thank you Paula and Steve.

  • Paula and Steve are lovely hosts and we had a wonderful stay. The room has windows on three sides and gives awesome views of the Ida Valley. You can even have a view of the beautiful nightsky from the bed. The breakfast was great. Four cute cats roam the house. We definitely recommend staying here!

  • An outstanding example of old-fashioned country hospitality in a rather old-fashioned part of New Zealand. You stay in a 1950s-style guest bedroom with ensuite, glazed all around with windows that give a 270-degree view of the countryside. The homestead is lined with books. Friendly host Paula comes from a literary background, knows everything about the locality and gave us a few tips about places to visit, along with service over and above the usual Airbnb. NB the place can be a little hard to find at dusk (lettering on the gateposts is in red and the house is set back from the road, though visible.)

I do have a seperate toilet as well in the laundry. The kitchen lounge and dining room are all shared areas. Wifi is available space in the fridge and a small freezer, and space in pantry for food. Clothes line out the back lawn.

This is not suburbia. Are you looking for a place to get away? Do want to be amazed by starry skies? Can you imagine waking up in the morning and opening the curtains to a stunning mountain vista. If you are getting tired of the bombardment of noise in the city, you will be astonished at the silence we offer.
Warm and cozy, this self contained unit has all the amenities you need to enjoy the stay you want. You can laze in the lounge or kickback in the kitchen. Our place is a great place to unwind.
Breath in the fresh mountain air. Take in the tranquility that a rural setting has to offer. Did I mention the sunrises? Ok I did :-) Stars, not the Hollywood variety, but on a clear night you can marvel at the beauty above.
  • Situated in a wonderful area. The accomodation was excellent.Everything was provided and the washing machine was a bonus for us.

  • If you’re staying here, it may be a little tricky finding it at the beginning. Just remember the small sign in front of the gate and look for the actual green cottage. Also, you’ll have to let yourself in by opening the entrance gate. Once in, the AirBnB is great!

Our guest accommodation is a good sized double bedroom with a new Queen sized bed. The large windows in the room provide a wonderful view out to the surrounding countryside and the star filled night sky. Breakfast items provided include bread for toast, jams / conserves, muesli / cereal, yogurt and our farm fresh eggs. All amenities in our home are shared
Located on over 15ha, we finished building our home at the end of 2016. As a panelised building, it's fairly unique for this area. Architecturally designed, it blends into the surrounding environment. The interior is lined with a beautiful ply which is light and modern. We enjoy welcoming guests to share our home with us. We have a herd of around 40 adult goats - some of which have been hand raised and enjoy welcoming our guests if it means that they will get a scratch and potentially a treat :-). Seasonally we also have the goat kids that we breed.
Our nearest neighbour is approximately 400 metres away and as there is very little light pollution in our area, it is an ideal spot for star gazing (or spotting satellites as they fly over). Alexandra township is approximately a 10-15 minute drive from our property as is the beautiful historical Clyde.
  • Angela and her daughter Maria were great hosts and her home is so lovely, I’d highly recommend! The place is absolutely beautiful and there was a feast for breakfast each morning. Her dogs coco and kyro are such sweethearts too! Definitely not to be missed :)

  • We enjoyed our stay here. The shared bathroom is very innovative. Great to use an outdoor shower and to use a composting toilet. Unlike long drops and chemical toilets it does not smell and there are no pesky flies buzzing about. It was warm and cost in the garlic tent. Wanda booked us in to the local pub for dinner where we had a good / huge meal with local wine.

Enjoy peace and privacy in a unique self-contained space with panoramic views of the Clutha River and surrounding mountains. As there is no wifi available its a great place to disconnect. Situated at Queensberry Hills we are a 20 minute drive from Cromwell and Wanaka and 60 minutes from the Queenstown airport. There are numerous vineyards in the area to enjoy a glass of local wine. If you enjoy walking there are a couple of tracks close by where you can enjoy the river or a good hill walk
Queensberry Hills was formerly part of Mt Pisa Station but was bought and subdivided into lifestyle blocks. Our house sits on the site of the original airstrip from where the topdressing plane operated.

  • What an incredible experience staying here! The views are absolutely incredible and we had the most amazing sunrise one morning. Location is about 20mins out of Wanaka and every bit worth staying out of town. Check in was super easy with the cabin being accessible straight away, very safe area being up the hill. Everything you want and need inside, the bed was so comfortable! Definitely sleep with all the blinds raised to take in the view. Shower was great, expect to hear the pump system work after using the amenities, not an issue. Great phone service and a TV in the room should you wish. So thoughtful with breakfast provided which really gives you the time to sleep in, relax and enjoy the serenity. Rick and Philippa you should be so proud of the space you have created, thank you so much for the stay and we will definitely be back when we visit NZ again :) so lovely to meet you both, Toyah and Markus

  • Charming and comfortable cottage in a great location. Paul was generous and accommodating. Excellent stay, lovely experience.

    Helen2019-11-29T00:00:00Z
  • Paul's place was exactly as described in the listing. It's a stone's throw away from the center of Naseby and has 3 comfortable rooms. It has been charmingly renovated and decorated and provides a comfy base for local activities. Paul's helper Craig was very responsive when we need to talk with him and was great. Overall I would say that it was a fantastic stay and the only possible thing that could be added to make it better would be the addition of internet in the house, but I understand why they may choose not to have it in Naseby! Thank you guys very much!

  • Staying here was a delight. The property has amazing views, it's quiet and Wanaka is only a short drive away. Nature is all around you, but beware with leaving a window or door open... we had a bird fly inside.. twice :-)

  • Very happy we found this place. If you are looking for a something that is off the beaten path but with access to the lakes and Queenstown, you won’t be disappointed. Plenty of space for our family of 5 to use as base camp for 3 days of exploring. We spent hours playing cards every evening and then made sure to go out and appreciate the stars.

  • Great location for those who want to enjoy peace and quiet. Thoughtful touches such as slippers by each bed and coffee/tea/milk. Most cooking facilities in the garage but that didn't bother us. Great to have a fireplace for when it's colder!

Two double style bunks and three single bunks. Good kitchen facilities. There is an outside hot-tub nearby, which must be booked prior to arrival. Extra cost for this of $40 per night.
Enjoy staying in a region renowned for its low humidity, hot temperatures in the summer, cold temperatures in the winter and amazing views of surrounding unique hills all year around. The "Transporter" is part of a complex that has other accommodation options including a cabin that is suitable for couples, and is listed separately. Access to electric vehicle charging station on site at no extra cost. Access to local covered swimming pool nearby. Gold coin donation.
Great pub just 200m down the road. Opposite is the oldest continuously running General Store in New Zealand. Unique old Engineering works (Hayes), 1500m down the road. If you are "into" motorbikes, it's about 1.5kms from the site of the unique "Brass Monkey" motorbike rally, held on Queens birthday weekend each year.

  • When my partner told me we were staying in a converted truck that slept 8 people, I thought it was going to be terrible. Yet, I was pleasantly surprised and really thankful we chose to stay there. The place was completely contained, had everything you might have needed, wonderful areas to sit outside and hang out, and was down the road from an amazing restaurant (book ahead!). We were greeted the next morning with breakfast and a smile and both owners were more than friendly, accommodating and helpful. I loved this place and I hope we can go back there with friends sometime in the future. Thank you again! Anne and Sebastiaan

Country cottage set on 10 acres with direct access onto Otago Central Rail Trail. Perfect for a weekend getaway, family holiday, biking the rail trail or just chilling out. She's not historic or luxurious but she is clean and comfortable and the views from the deck across farmland to the Hawkdun Range are just great. Nearby Lauder village offers a great coffee stop at Stationside Cafe and the evening meals at the Lauder Hotel are legendary (but you must book ahead). Twin room can be super King
Brookside Cottage is the perfect place to base yourself to explore the Manuherikia, St Bathans and Maniototo areas and with Queenstown and Wanaka within a 90 minute drive a day on the ski slopes is an option.
The thing that makes Lauder so special is it's country feel. The locals are welcoming, approachable and ready to share their local knowledge with you.

  • We spent 18 days exploring the north and South Island and this was our favourite accommodation! So much so that we plan to stay again but for longer! Kate and Josh are brilliant hosts, and we even managed to meet the family who lived near by. It felt like a home away from home but with the luxuries of a hotel. Can’t wait to stay here again.

    Robyn2020-02-28T00:00:00Z
  • Very tastefully furnished accomodation. The muffins and lovely wine made us feel very welcome. The outside kitchen was super!

  • Expect the greatest BnB experience you've ever had. Kate took the time to think of every little detail down to a handwritten letter upon arrival!! We asked ahead of time for an iron for a wedding dress and she whipped out a steamer! The view from the top deck was UNreal, the pool area and the entire outdoor area provided an incredible place to relax and hang. The only negative is I wish I would have spent more time there instead of at a wedding. Expect an unforgettable experience.

Welcome to Mountain Spirit NZ. 10% off for 3 nights - stay and enjoy peace & paradise at our Eco sanctuary (20min to Wanaka). A magical place to rest & reset and explore the local area. With spectacular views, the spacious Yurt is quiet & private. At the highest point on our property, you'll feel on top of the world! Wake up to the sounds of native birds, enjoy incredible sunsets & stargaze thru the skylight at night. Off-the-grid, spring-fed water, homemade bread & local eggs, be in nature.
We live on a unique 8 acre organic property with stunning views, tucked into the foothills of Mt Grandview. With Off-the-grid Solar and gravity-fed filtered spring water, this eco-sanctuary is a central location to rest a few days and explore what this spectacular area has to offer. This is "Glamping" at it's best, with all the mod cons. There is excellent WiFi, an outlet for charging devices, and to provide lighting. The LPG gas heater, warms the space in no time, and keeps the yurt nice and toasty even in winter. We serve homemade bread & jam and butter and local eggs on your first night. Cereals, milk, tea and coffee are also provided. We provide a small 2burner gas cooker for tea/coffee & making basic meals as well as a cooler box for milk and food. Cooking utensils, cutlery and crockery are provided. We also provide a BBQ for your personal use as well as outdoor table and chairs. The heated bathroom block (new) is a separate bldg down some stairs. It is spacious and has a great shower (lots of pressure). Please note - If the bungalow is rented at the same time, this bathroom building will be shared with max. 2 other guests. Close enough to Wanaka for the action but with the added benefits of returning to a stunning natural environment, sounds of native birds & nature, spectacular sunsets and sunrises, stars at night and mountain walks out the back gate . With lots of beautiful trees, organic gardens (help yourself to fruit from the trees when in season) and green spaces, this is a unique experience of New Zealand. We care about our planet and our guests, so we use sustainable ecostore products for cleaning, washing and supplies. A very quiet getaway with off-the-grid power and mountain spring-fed water. Our guests love it here and we are sure you will too! ( just read our reviews). We look forward to welcoming you here.
We're at the end of a small dirt road, with a few neighbors off in the distance. So we're quite private, but close enough to Wanaka so you don't miss out on the action. Lake Hawea, a 10 minute drive offers a nice little restaurant and store, and the stunning lake is great for skimming rocks or going for a swim in summer!
  • Staying in the yurt is a unique experience. You can see the stars and the milky way from the bed. Location gives you a wide view of the local area and the expansive night sky. It's an easy ride into town. The bread is really wonderful. The bathroom is a small walk (down stairs) and is shared if other guests are there. All in all a lovely experience with a wonderful host family.

Since the 1920s the Poolburn Hotel has been the meeting place of the Ida Valley. Nestled in the remote highlands of Central Otago, between Dunedin and the Lakes District, the valley is an adventure mecca. No longer a pub, we now offer lodging and guided activities to adventurers from afar. You'll relax in a recently renovated room, with ensuite. Please send a message if you have any special requirements or are interested in some activities.
What adventures are on offer? Some of our favourites include: Biking the Poolburn Gorge Tunnels & Viaduct, the highlight of the iconic Rail Trail. Fishing in the Poolburn Reservoir with a picnic lunch (possibly) including freshly caught Koura crayfish. Mountain bike shuttles on the downhill tracks above the historic township of Clyde. Cross country mountain biking in the rocky terrain of Alexandra or pine forests of Naseby. Horse riding in the valley, made famous by the Riders of Rohan from The Lord of The Rings movies. Standup paddleboarding on the beautiful Blue Lake at St Bathans. Winery tour of the vineyards around Alexandra, home to some classic Central Otago Pinot Noirs.
The pub is surrounded by farmland. The dirt road to the Poolburn Reservoir is bumpy but accessible to 2WD vehicles except in winter.
  • Cool place for biking and trips to Queentown etc. Wifi works fine on the whole terrain and the lawn and the hammock are already now perfect for a relaxing afternoon in the sun. Sara the chef is a fab cook - make sure you eat there!

Lots of things to do in the area and they gave me some good places to see on the rest of my trip. The place is going to look so nice when all the renovations are done! Highly recommend!

Mark offers the option to get dinner/breakfast and has drinks available for purchase as well, and it was so worth it. Everything was so fresh and yummy, it just added to the overall experience at this unique space! Mark was super hospitable and really went above and beyond to make us feel welcome!

  • This is easily the coolest spot I’ve stayed in New Zealand! It’s a restored/repurposed pub that serves as an authentic, outdoory Airbnb. Mark is an amazing host and goes out of his way to make sure people have a great time. I had the best sleep of my life here. The dogs are incredibly fun and friendly. The breakfast is amazing. You really feel like you’re part of the family. I 110% recommend staying here, it will be one of your favorite experiences in NZ. Thanks Mark!

Two bedroomed recently renovated Cottage with an additional two room sleep out situated on a large property, only 5 minutes walk to the centre of Historic Naseby. Family friendly, great holiday home. Plenty of lawn area for the kids to explore. In the summer time enjoy a BBQ out on the Deck and in the cooler months enjoy the cosy log burner with plenty of firewood. Sleeps 10 people.
  • It’s delightful and perfect for dogs. Fully fenced and they feel as welcomed. We all loved the batch feel and got total relaxation. Great shower! We will defiantly be back!

  • Awesome weekend away......highly recommend this place

    Darren2019-12-01T00:00:00Z
  • We loved this wee pad on the outskirts of Naseby, quite a private area, nice piece of land. The hosts are updating the place and the areas that are renovated are lovely. The beds are good quality and really comfortable, the house was very clean and had nice linens. Overall, they are making great efforts to improve the property and make it awesome. The home was heated nicely with a fire and oil column heaters in the rooms. The exterior could do with some work and the grounds and landscaping but we can see it is all happening....the owners are doing a nice job and it is comfortable to stay as it is.

  • What a wonderful stay we had. The weather was perfect and the little cottage was perfectly suited to it. We spent most of our time on the large sundrenched deck area and the kids enjoyed running around the large fully fenced section. We occupied both bedrooms within the cottage but had no need for the two outside bunk bedrooms. Both bedrooms are of adequate size. Also inside the cottage is a bathroom with shower cubicle and vanity unit. The kitchen area is a good size and contains a kitchen table with four seats. The lounge is cosy, seats five people on the two sofa's. The fireplace is very efficient and heats up the cottage quite quickly and retains the heat well. The toilet is attached to the outside of the cottage. Late night visits were shared with moths if not quick enough to close the door, not to mention a little bit chilly. The cottage is fully equipped with everything you would need, like a home away from home. Linen and towels included. Saying that, I don't recall seeing a washing machine if intending on a long visit. Perhaps there was a little bit of clutter, for example the freezer was full with the owners goods (resisted bbqing the delicious looking fillet steak) and there is a locked wardrobe in one of the bedrooms. Location is great, about a 5 to 10 minute walk to the park, cafe, pubs and shop. But also in a nice quiet and peaceful street. There is a little private forest walk behind the cottage to stretch your legs. We understand there are a few more improvements and renovations coming so future visits will be even more pleasurable. As mentioned, we really enjoyed our stay and would certainly stay again.

Our place is close to Alexandra and very close to the start of the Central Otago rail trail. The Elms Cottage is located within one hour's drive from Queenstown airport. You’ll love our place because it is a small family farm/lifestyle block with lots of animals and pets like goats, sheep and a donkey. Our place is good for couples and families (with kids).

Welcome to Mountain Spirit NZ, a secluded sanctuary. 10% discount for 3 nights to encourage you to stay longer and enjoy peace & paradise here at our eco sanctuary. Easy 20min to Wanaka, 10 to Lake Hawea. This is a magical place to rest & reset, explore the stunning locality & feel revitalised, nurtured & nourished. (off-the-grid, water is from a mountain stream, homemade bread & local eggs). Your charming cottage with deck & enclosed kitchen is quiet and private with stunning views. Kids ❤
We live on an 8 acre organic property nestled in the foothills of Mt Grandview, so there is plenty of space & spectacular views. We serve homemade bread & jam and butter, and local eggs on your first night. Cereals, milk, tea and coffee are also provided. The spacious and light filled bungalow is one large room, with an extendable dining table/workbench, a very comfortable queen bed and a futon couch. The easy to use heater warms it up in no time. There is a large verandah attached with an enclosed and well equipped basic kitchen, incl an outside table & chairs. You have your own private lawn area with a BBQ, picnic table and also an outside bath if you like!. The heated bathroom block (new) is a separate bldg a few meters away. It is spacious and has a great shower (lots of pressure). Please note - If the yurt is rented at the same time, this bathroom building will be shared with max. 2 other guests. Our guests love it here - just read our reviews. We hope you will come and stay with us too.
We are located in a secluded valley, adjacent to mountains, with no neighbors in sight. It's very quiet and relaxing with great views of the Southern Alps. But easy access to all that's happening in Wanaka. A great place to base yourself for a few days and explore the local area which has so much to offer.
  • Amanda and Randall's eco retreat is a fantastic place to stay! They really had it all from nice touches like the eggs from the farm, to great recommendations on what to do, to a very tidy space. We would recommend this place to anyone!

  • Get away from it all and be off the grid at this beautifully situated Airbnb far away from everything but close to Lake Hawea and tonnes of magnificient nature. Allow yourself some hammock time and also enjoy the many spectacular hiking and cycling trails in the area. Randall, Amanda and Dexter are super friendly and easy going. And their home made apricot jam: yummy, yummy. And: there's a Steinway!

  • Beautiful and peaceful Place to relax in the nature! We loved our evenings sitting outside and watching the stars in the silence. The hosts are very friendly and the breakfast with fresh baked bread and eggs on the first morning was amazing.

  • Mountain Spirit is a great venue for getting back to nature. The hosts share their space, their love of food, and their knowledge of the local environment with all guests. The food was fabulous and the views were stunning. We would definitely return on our next visit to the area.

  • We stayed one week at the Mountain Spirit and enjoyed every single moment! The area is so beautiful, peaceful and calm. Thank you again for having us and for the unforgettable Yoga-Session in the Yurt!

  • For a real off-the-grid experience in secluded fields 20 minutes or so out of Wanaka, you can't beat Randall and Amanda's place. They are committed environmentalists and gifted hosts. Highly recommended.

    Scott2020-02-11T00:00:00Z
  • Randall and Amanda were very welcoming and the accomodation was as advertised. A slice of remote NZ with the sounds of birds, sheep and wind in the trees. A perfect spot to get away from reality and explore the great outdoors.

    Hayley2020-02-08T00:00:00Z
  • A great place to escape reality. The views from Randall and Amanda's place were some of the better views we've stayed near. We really enjoyed our stay and really took our time to relax. It's clear that the Airbnb aspect of their home is done with a lot of passion too! Definitely worth staying!
