Places to stay in Gerangamete
Inthelonggrass cottage is a secluded, peaceful get away for you and your pets. Relax on the front verandah or stroll in the nearby Otway National Park and be surrounded by birds and bush. You can enjoy Mountain bike riding, hiking, waterfalls, platypus viewing, craft beer as well as the coastal towns of Lorne and Apollo Bay. We supply all linen so you only need to bring food and toiletries. We have Lived here for 30 years and can provide recommendations on places to visit during your stay.
The cottage is fully self contained with oven, microwave, full size fridge and hot plates. The cottage offers serenity, birds, bush and a place where the whole family can come, including your loved pets. We have a large split system to ensure you are comfortable in the crisp mornings and the warm evenings. The cottage name is drawn from my experience with an elderly indigenous man in the 80’s. I met him when I was a social worker in Darwin Centrelink. He was being denied the pension as he led a traditional nomadic lifestyle and therefore had no fixed address. When I asked him where he likes to be he said “in the longgrass...a place in the bush I love to be” . I duly recorded his address as Inthelonggrass and he went off with the income security he deserved. We returned to Victoria and bought our own place in the bush. I don’t think he will mind me honouring him by using his words to name our own place....inthelonggrass...in the bush where we love to be.
We are 5minutes drive from Forrest where guests have a choice of dining including a brewery, pub and bespoke restaurant. Birregurra is 15 minutes away with many interesting collectible shops, cafes and restaurants. We are also close to Lake Elizabeth and Stephenson Falls. A trip to the Otway Fly is 1 hour through magnificent rainforest and we are just 30 minutes from Loren and 40 from Apollo Bay.
  • What a cute little bush hideaway down the coast. Friendly, easy check in. Ample beds for sleeping and all amenities needed. Thank you for a lovely stay

  • Great low key spot.

  • We had a such a lovely time here! The place is a delight and was super clean. Really fantastic location to explore the beautiful Otways!

  • It was lovely, dog friendly, and there were lots of awesome recommendations in the packet of brochures for local activities. It was also just nice to read and drink wine while our dog explored the property and to walk around the property with her.

  • Jean's cottage is really clean and nice. Check-in was very easy as well. It's a bit far from everything but the price is great! There is no WiFi, which we didn't realize. So, just make sure you're okay with it :)

    Denise2020-01-21T00:00:00Z
  • Nice bush retreat if you want something secluded and quite. Good value for money.

    Louw2020-01-19T00:00:00Z
  • This is a lovely tranquil cottage set in amongst a beautiful landscape. Native koalas share the trees around the cottage. It was a very peaceful place to stay, lovely hosts, and a change from staying in the heart of Lorne.

    Jason2020-01-13T00:00:00Z
  • Jean was the best host I had! She also looked after our puppies when we were out for the day. Communication was great and the accomodation was just perfect for us. I loved the location too, so quiet and detached.

  • Such an awesome place for a chill weekend. Lots to do around the area if you want to go exploring local attractions or just stay and enjoy the amazing property. Perfect place to let our dog run around free she loved it and is absolutely pooped after her weekend away!

  • We had a lovely time staying at 2 dogs retreat. Our kids (2&5yrs) had a great time playing in the outdoor space and it was very helpful that it was fenced off. Beautifully renovated and clean, we would love to stay again.

  • Get way to relax and escape the city. Spent a week at Kate's and that week went really quick. So we must of had a good time. Great open space for dogs and getting close to the outdoors, while still having a super comfy bed to sleep in and coffee in the morning.

    Mark2020-02-08T00:00:00Z
  • Very relaxing and idyllic retreat. Was perfect for our whole family (including two dogs) to recuperate after a busy year. Was a wonderful base to explore the otways, great ocean road - Apollo bay and Lorne, and also inland towns of Birregurra and Forrest. A wonderful natural part of the world. coming home to Kate’s place after days exploring was a great sanctuary with all mod cons and a beautiful vista from the expansive deck. Thanks Kate for making our stay so memorable!

    Alex2020-01-28T00:00:00Z
  • Two Dogs Retreat was a fantastic place for our end of year wind-down. It was great to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life and work to a beautiful, serene, country house with space and fresh air. Our two dogs loved it too-with a secure fence and lots of room to run around in and explore. The back deck is perfect for that morning coffee and bbq dinners. The house is beautiful-rooms comfortable, cosy lounge and everything you need in the kitchen. We highly recommend it for any couple, family or small group. It won't disappoint! Thanks Kate.

    Jodie2020-01-11T00:00:00Z
  • A fantastic country retreat just 20min to Colac (great Op Shop!) & 30mins or so to Skenes Creek. We just loved how well it is set up for dogs with a secure fully fenced huge yard. The tennis courts were a huge plus for our kids too. Everything has been thought of plus air conditioning was a bonus in the heat. Just note to bigger families like ours - no dishwasher. Highly recommend.

    Michael2020-01-02T00:00:00Z
  • What a great place, we had a lovely time at the two dogs retreat. The house and property are excellent for kids, dogs and lazy parents. A well-appointed house, with a great set-up and great views. Well, set-up for both good and bad weather, the fireplace, wifi, and Foxtel made all difference when there were a couple of miserable rainy days. The property itself is fantastic with great space for kids outside and the most dog-friendly and safe place we have stayed at. Not far away from Forest and Colac, so plenty of things to do. The beechy rail trail is only a few km away as are the mountain bike trails. We will definitely be back.

  • Supreb, stylish and classy modern house and outdoor entertaining area. The house is very spacious, comfortable and very well decked out. Huge outdoor deck with a great dining table. The backyard is huge with an amazing outdoor fireplace and a cubby house and tree house that the kids loved to play on. The host, Kate, was very gracious and looked after our every need. The accomodation was very clean, tidy and well stocked. Beautiful, peaceful country surroundings. Loved every minute of it. I would highly recommend it and will definitely be staying there again. Thanks.

  • Gorgeous little cottage an Forrest. It is a near enough to the brewery to be a delight, but far enough not to be noisy. Also close to the chocolaterie and the bike tracks. The cottage itself is stylish and super comfy. From the cosy lounge room, to the outdoor deck overlooking the paddocks where we could relax with a glass of wine. It was lovely.

  • Fantastic location. Very cozy cottage with peaceful garden space surrounding the house. Very comfy couches and a relaxing place to unwind. Great set up. Easy walk to the Brewery, General store and Platypi chocolates. Fantastic location for a visit to Lake Elizabeth, 10 mins drive, we enjoyed an easy walk amongst the tall trees and ferns would highly recommend a visit to Lake Elizabeth for anyone choosing to stay at the Wrens Nest.

Take a step back in time, to bygone era, where life was simpler, where people spent time with dignified entertainment and life seemed to have more space and time. Welcome back to the great age of Steam. The train was used as a workshop, when the original owner was building the house next door (also a Dufflebird property, Otway's Loft). In 2015 we renovated the derelict carriage to the vaguely steam-punk style holiday accommodation. It is available year round and can sleep up to 6 guests.
When we started renovating, the carriage did not have enough intact to restore it, so we have developed our own style that is vaguely steam-punk influenced. It took nine months to renovate the train from a pretty ragged start. Almost every surface had to have something done to it, and we found that carriages were really tightly put together (all that rattling) and hard to pull apart. When we did get panels off, we had no idea what we would find. We completely stripped and rewired the electrical, and did plumbing from scratch. Renovating anything over 100 years will have its challenges, but this was exceptional. It was opened for guests in July 2015. It is still a work in progress, there is a lot more to do before it reaches our vision, but we have been astounded by it's popularity. Special features include : - Can sleep 6 but 2 or 4 would be more comfortable. See Sleeping Options below. - 3 Bedrooms. Two in a single compartment with a double compartment master bed room. Two Queen beds, two thin train singles. - Full linen service with beds made up for you on arrival. - Bathroom with shower - Open plan kitchen/living room - Wood fire box heater with wood supply included - Full small kitchen with stove, oven, sink, fridge and cupboards - WiFi - Italian Stove top coffee maker and French Press (plunger) - Basic provisions like olive oil, spices, tea, coffee, Vegemite and Glad Wrap With great regret we no longer offer the four free bikes. The expectation of having bikes in good working order was a service we could not reliably offer without living nearby and maintaining them between guests. Bring your own mountain bikes or you can hire bikes at Forrest Hire Bikes, two minutes walk away. - Pets and children welcome. The yard is fenced but a clever dog could easily escape. NO TV. There is a stereo, books and board games. There is not a washing machine, nor dryer. Steam, certainly wont be for everyone, but we have had great feedback from the young and the young at heart. There seems to be a great fondness for the "Great Age of Steam", when locomotives were king! In the late 1800's trains were the greatest technological achievement of humans, they opened new horizons, and were a symbol of power and progress. We hope we have tapped in to this, and we're excited to be able to share it with guests. If you have instagram, you can follow both our guests and our personal stays at @dufflebird_getaways
Forrest is a gorgeous small town of weatherboard shacks, surrounded by towering Mountain Ash rain forest with lush ferny under-story. The dawn birdsong is deafening. There is a lot to do around Forrest even if you are not a mountain biker. Ten Things To Do •Walk around Lake Elizabeth or take the platypus tour. •Go mountain biking on Victoria’s best trail network. With great regret we no longer offer the four free bikes. The expectation of having bikes in good working order was a service we could not reliably offer without living nearby and maintaining them between guests. Bring your own mountain bikes or you can hire bikes at Forrest Hire Bikes, two minutes walk away. •Visit Otways Fly and zip line (Longest and highest rainforest sky walk in the world ) •Bushwalk to waterfalls and Redwood Forest. (Hopetoun Falls, Triplet Falls, Beauchamp Falls, Stevenson Falls). •Forrest Historic Walk •Visit local Wineries and Berry Farms •Forrest Brewery for lunch •Forrest Guesthouse for weekend degustation lunch or dinner. •Brae Restaurant •Spoil yourself and make it a long weekend. Take the Great Ocean Road home on Monday when there is no one around.
  • A really unique and 'cool' place to stay in the lovely township of Forrest. The carriage has a lovely feel to it, lots of original features but all the mod cons you need as well. The very comfy beds with high quality bedding and the silence of the country gave us a wonderful nights sleep. We took our dog with us and he had ball. The plot isn't securely fenced yet but I believe the owners are planning do that soon. Would definitely stay there again.

    Hilary2020-03-11T00:00:00Z
  • Steam was even better than it looked it the photos, and it was obvious a lot of thought has been put into the details of every part of the carriage. Fleur also provided a lot of local tips. Highly recommended!

    Alice2020-03-01T00:00:00Z
  • This place is amazing. The mosquito is a little bit more. Always pay attention to close the door all the time. Except for that, everything is fantastic.

    Shanqi2020-02-25T00:00:00Z
  • The best, most thoughtful host I’ve ever had. From local tips to the little touches on the property, you can tell that Fleur really cares about the place and everyone that stays here. It was the perfect weekend.

    David2020-02-02T00:00:00Z
  • Steam Carriage exceeded all of our expectations for the better, and it truly was the most fun we have ever had at an AirBnB. The original 1920s steam carriage character has been preserved beautifully, while having fully functioning modern day luxuries i.e. waterfall rain shower head, heating, a full sized gas oven & stovetop. Our favourite addition to the carriage was the firebox. Forest itself is a perfectly quant town of just 230, perfect if you wanted to get away from it all or use it as a base for the Otways & Great Ocean Road. Highly recommend Fleur for her communication, and for such a unique stay!

    Aaron2020-01-25T00:00:00Z
  • This train carriage is full of charm. From eating breakfast outside to the nighttime games by the fire place. Not to mention such a great location. Recommended.

  • We really enjoyed the beauty and character of STEAM! It was very peaceful, well equipped, comfy bed, we enjoyed lying under the tree in the hammock with the birds chirping! great sound system. Beautiful walks in Forrest. Thanks Fleur!

The main bedroom fills the whole top floor, with floor to ceiling windows framing the view. The second bedroom is downstairs with 2 single daybeds. We have everything you need, just pack your bags and you are done. • Fully equipped kitchen and laundry • Deck with outdoor setting and BBQ • All linen and towels • Wild bird seed available to treat the king parrots, cockatoos, kookaburras and crimson rosellas visiting from the forest. • Speakers with cable and Bluetooth for your own playlist. • Plenty of information and ideas of where to eat, drink and activities in the area.
  • It's such a gorgeous place with an amazing view. The view down the valley was exceptional and we spent most of our time on the deck. Felt very secluded and relaxed and had a perfect getaway from the daily hustle and bustle. It was a unique, beautiful, fascinating place and we enjoyed every minute of our stay. Bring plenty of food so that you don't have to leave the place during your stay 😁 Had everything we needed. Cosy, clean and full of handy amenities. Loved the library too. Caroline was very helpful, easy to reach and communicated everything clearly. Checking in and out was easy. Overall it's a hidden gem. Worth the stay. We love it and would love to come back again soon. One of the best places we have been to. Definitely recommend the place. Thanks Caroline 😊👍

This property is spectacular all year round with a warm wood fire in winter or a large front deck to catch some summer sun, if its a luxurious couples getaway your after - then look no further!
Things to note about the area: * Short downhill walk to The Wye River General Store (Approx 800m). Google estimates a 12 minute walk. * Lorne and Apollo Bay are a 20 minute drive away. * There is ample parking however it is shared with the owners personal home. * We suggest picking up some supplies and champagne because once you have seen "The Deck House" you wont want to leave! ##Check ins/out We are extremely flexible with early check ins and late check outs if possible, feel free to ask, however we can,t confirm these until 24 hrs of your arrival! ##Please Note We do not allow bookings below a 2 night minimum
  • Great space with amazing views. Perfect for couples, short walk to the beach, the general store and the pub. Very comfortable space, great bed and the bath has a perfect vantage point. The view is spectacular and we never got over it.

    Bernie2020-03-12T00:00:00Z
  • Absolutely breathtaking views and incredibly luxurious house. The bath, deck and fireplace were a few of the highlights. The owner did seem to have issue with people coming and going, which was uncomfortable as it was our wedding. However, we couldn't fault the property and would stay again.

    Jordan2020-03-09T00:00:00Z
  • The most amazing property, can’t fault it the views are outstanding didn’t want to leave. It seems to be owned and run by a ghost though as there was zero communication.

    Louise2020-03-03T00:00:00Z
  • Amazing views, made our weekend extra special! Thanks for creating a wonderful space

    Dan2020-02-23T00:00:00Z
  • Private, quiet and picturesque. Saw kangaroos, koalas, stingrays, dolphins and parakeets regularly over the four days. Gardens were being updated and a new private beach track added to the qtmosphere. We met the owners who were lovely and keen to make our stay enjoyable. We will be back next year.

    Janette2020-01-26T00:00:00Z
  • This place is amazing for a couples get away. The view is second to none. The space inside was perfect for what we were after on the final leg of our trip. Being the final leg and with million dollar views we were looking forward to soaking up the views from the balcony but unfortunately the pictures weren’t accurate at all, there were 2 plastic chairs and a small table big enough for a couple of drinks and an ash tray. Also the renovation next door cutting timber was a bit of a drag but overall this place is mint. The general store is great, as is the pub. The wildlife was awesome ( koalas, cockatoos, many bird species)We would recommend this place anytime. Hopefully the seating becomes a bit more fitting of the location soon. Todd

    Todd2020-01-13T00:00:00Z
  • What a special place. Amazing views. A great space to read, relax and enjoy the water and wildlife views.

    Kelly2020-01-04T00:00:00Z
  • That view is as good as it gets! Simply stunning private home that we did not want to leave during our stay. The brand new bathroom renovation was beautiful and modern. Bluetooth speaker and strong WiFi were also appreciated. Tons of wildlife around the property, and we even saw a koala in a tree right next to the house (we aren’t from Australia, so this was a real treat for us)! Amazing space, and highly recommend, you will definitely not regret staying here! We hope to return here again!

  • Sarah's cottage is very nice and cosy (totally hygge especially with the fire on). If you are after that great place at great location, this is it! The brewery next door is a convenient outing with tasty beer and all... We really enjoyed our stay.

    Hana2020-03-01T00:00:00Z
  • Such a nice house and garden. We really loved spending our time here and would recommend staying for more than 2 days. Many beautiful places around the Otways to discover. We loved Forrest, a very calm village, a tip is to buy food on your way here since many shops and restaurants close early. The kitchen in the house is really nice! Thanks Sarah!

  • Defenetly one of our best Airbnb that we ever had. It was so cosy and clean. The whole environment was amazing. A peacefull place on earth apart from the tourist traffic. Would love to stay longer than 2 nights. Highly recommended. You need to taste the beer from the private brewery next door. A huge thank you Sarah ;)

Quirky, Three storey tree house, hand crafted from local timber and vintage train carriage parts. Character rich, comfortable and FUN. The town of Forrest offers world class mountain biking. Ride in-ride out from the house. It also has some great food, coffee and a Brewery. Explore the Great Ocean Road and Otways Hinterland. Stunning waterfalls and natural attractions.
Note: The nightly price on the top right is mid week, off peak, with a small group. AirBnB adjusts pricing with these variables. Otways Loft was specifically bought, renovated and set up for holiday accommodation, the long awaited sister property to Liptrap Loft (National winner of Peoples Choice 2014 + Romance 2013 + state winner of Outdoor Lovers 2012). It is not 5 star luxury, but we can say with confidence that it is unique. The builder lived in a shed using the train carriage as a workshop whist building the house. It is an eclectic construction built on a framework of tree poles in a triangular pattern. The interior is a mixture of train parts, local timber and salvaged materials. Every shingle over the house and train was hand cut from the forest. It was a labour of love. Forrest is set in the hinterland behind the Great Ocean Road. It is a gorgeous small town of weatherboard shacks, surrounded by towering Mountain Ash rain-forest with lush ferny under-story. The dawn birdsong is deafening. There is a lot to do around Forrest even if you are not a mountain biker. Spoil yourself and make it a long weekend. Take the Great Ocean Road home on Monday when there is no one around. We scoured Victoria to find a property to match Liptrap Loft in unique character & charm. We think we have found it. There is still work to do, to get it to where we want it, but if you are not precious ;0) we think guests will enjoy the house and love Forrest. Special features include : - free standing claw foot bath in master bedroom ( with a lovely view over the green yard and landscape) - newly renovated bathroom - Wood fired heater with wood supply included - air con/split system in lounge room - Fully equipped kitchen. Oven/Stove. Dishwasher - Kitchen aid mixer. Juicer - washing machine and dryer - WiFi - Italian style stove-top coffee maker and French press (plunger) - Basic provisions like olive oil, spices, tea, coffee, Vegemite and Glad Wrap - Lush garden, fenced but not dog proof. There is a purpose built dog run on the veranda - With great regret we no longer offer the four free bikes. The expectation of having bikes in good working order was a service we could not reliably offer without living nearby and maintaining them between guests. Bring your own mountain bikes or you can hire bikes at Forrest Hire Bikes, two minutes walk away. - Piano - Pets and children welcome. BEDDING 3 bedroom (with a 4th loft/space but no door) - upstairs master bedroom with claw foot bath . King bed, that can split into 2 singles -upstairs reading room with balcony has two singles which can also be zipped together to convert to a king. -Down stairs is a third bedroom with a queen bed. -There is also a loft with a loft ladder and double futon. This is available as another bedroom for someone nimble. It is not suitable for elderly, but kids love it. Pricing includes linen. Total - 6 single beds (two of which convert to King beds), 1 queen bed and one double futon. The train carriage next door is also available for holiday rental. See the AirBnb listing: Steam Carriage In The Otways https://www.airbnb.com.au/rooms/7294998 The two properties can be rented together for larger groups. Together the properties can sleep up to 14 guests ( but ideal for a total of 10-12). If you have instagram, you can follow both our guests and our personal stays at @dufflebird_getaways
Forrest was a logging town until a decade ago. Since then it has been reinvigorated as the center for mountain biking in the state. World class mountain bike trails surround the town like ski runs at a snow resort. The town is surrounded by gorgeous lush rain-forest, with massive gum trees, teeming with wildlife like kangaroos, koalas, wombats, wallaby's and echidnas. Scores of birds pass through the garden all day. Forrest is full of gorgeous birds.
  • Perfect escape and fantastic property styled beautifully.

  • My sisters and I had the best time at Fleur's place! Absolutely slipped into another time period while staying here. One minute we were stressed on the city highway, and next minute we were baking pies and puddings, playing the piano and watching local goats. Was especially beautiful walking to the reservoir and getting to know some locals in town. Cannot recommend enough.

    James2020-01-31T00:00:00Z
  • Absolutely loved our stay in this beautiful accomodation. Fleur was a fantastic and very helpful host. The amenities were lovely and clean and the kitchen was very well equiped. Very close walk to the Local store and Brewery. Overall a fantastic family holiday in beautiful Forrest.

    Nicola2020-01-02T00:00:00Z
  • What a beautiful place! We had the most peaceful and relaxing stay at Fleur & Mike's. Waking up to birdsong every morning and sitting around the fire playing cards and drinking wine at night - LOVE that there is NO TV! Fabulous kitchen with everything you could need, including handy condiments like olive oil, salt & pepper, herbs & spices etc. The bed was extremely comfortable, the shower cozy and the chairs on the deck lovely to relax on while the sun went down. The location is spot on with loads of lovely walks only a short distance away. The town itself is quaint and lovely. Wish we could have stayed longer than two nights but we will definitely be back and next time with friends! Highly recommend!

    Marnel2019-12-23T00:00:00Z
  • So beautiful! Definitely a great place to stay if you need a little get away from the city.

Platypi Studio overlooks native bush from a large deck with panoramic windows. The studio is next to the brand new Platypi Chocolate chocolaterie and cafe, offering the best coffee in town. We provide 2 vouchers for free coffee each day and leave artisan choccies on your pillow. Platypi Studio is modern, spacious and comfortable and is a great place to base your Otways and Great Ocean Road experience.
If you are in Forrest for our world famous mountain biking, our architecturally-designed studio is right on the southern trail head and the brand new skills park. The Yaugher trailhead is about a 3km ride/drive. Feel like a walk through the bush? Trails start within 50 metres of the door or take a drive to the beautiful Lake Elizabeth. Stephenson's Falls is a short drive away, or use your Forrest stay as a base to explore nearby beaches (25 minutes), Trees Adventure ropes course, waterfalls, Otway Fly and even the 12 Apostles. Platypi Chocolate offers delicious all day meals and yummy delights or walk to Forrest Brewery or the Terminus Hotel for dinner. Famous restaurants Brae and Beacon Point are about 20 minutes drive away. Want to relax? Sit on the wide deck or swing in a hammock, read a book or have a snooze. Fish in the reservoir or surrounding streams. The large windows look over the bush, so even if it's raining you can enjoy our beautiful environment in warmth or sit around a blazing outdoor fire pit and admire the stars. The kitchenette includes a small oven, griller, hotplates, microwave, toaster and kettle. We supply a variety of teas and plunger coffee. This is an open plan studio with a separate modern bathroom. It is large and comfortable, but suitable for a couple only.
There are lots of options for eating, coffee, beer and wine. The General Store has plenty of provisions, but it's not a supermarket. Everything is within around a 10 minute walk.
  • We had a great stay here. The apartment was great - the kitchen was big enough to make breakfast each morning and we enjoyed the outdoor fireplace on the cooler evening. I would recommend staying here.

  • Big thanks to Hannah & Quinn for letting us stay in their beautiful room on an amazing property. The room was stylish, warm and very cozy, adding a luxurious feel after a long day adventuring in the surrounding forests/waterfalls which are close by, which were also recommended by Hannah after dining at the pub down the road which does great meals. Would definitely stay here again (excited to find an excuse to do so).

Rabbiter's Cottage is a magnificent weatherboard shack, with comfortable furnishings & quirky finishes. Our cottage is ideally placed to explore the Otway's, the Great Ocean Road or the Shipwreck Coast. We are beside the mountain bike trails, close to the Forrest Brewery, Bespoke Harvest and Brae district. Please read below 'Getting Around' for transfer details to Brae.
Rabbiter's is a classic old 'home among the gumtree's' cottage in the Otway's Hinterland ( complete with the verandah out-the-front ). It is a house with modern comforts & stylish shack interiors / lots of indoor greenery & house plants, which add to the calm feel. The cottage has No Grand-Designs / Architectural renovations. The Master Bedroom consists of a Queen Size bed. Both other bedrooms have a pair of single beds in each. The Outdoor Bathroom / Shower / Toilet: remains outdoors to this current day, however it has been recently renovated. If concerned about the traditional outdoor location, please understand, it is only a few steps from the back door and all under-cover. Furthermore, it isn’t the typical spider & cobwebs out-house experience. The kitchen & lounge area are compact, even more so, if the house is full ( 6 people ), but what it lacks in spaciousness, it makes up in character / charm & cosiness. Our yard has lots of space and seclusion. The unruly hedge hides the house from the road. Across the road is a farmer's paddock & hay shed, while the cottage backs onto a neighbour's paddock. The orientation of the house allows it to stay cool in Summer ( we haven't experienced an uncomfortable Summer without air-conditioning ) & for the duration of Winter, we have a constant supply of firewood. Please bring the bulk of your groceries / no supermarkets close by. The local general stores have basic grocery items, and all seem to have fantastic barista-made coffee. Our cottage & garden is ideal for children ( we even have a resident koala ) and the Otway's area has lots of nature-based activities to enjoy.
The neighbourhood is quiet. Farmers & Growers quietly produce & grow. Our next door neighbour is a horticulturist / his property is a fabulous berry farm. Cow's graze in the paddock opposite us. For weekenders like us, we come to escape the everyday. My favourite time to visit Barwon Downs, is December, filling our buckets with Wally's berries, and in Winter ( l love the smell of burning wood ).
  • We absolutely loved our stay at Elizabeth ‘s cottage. The house was spotlessly clean, cozy, comfortable and full of charm and character. The beds were super comfy and we all slept so well. We just loved how Elizabeth has styled the cottage. So unique but authentic to its rustic charm. We spent hours outside around the fire, having BBQ’s, playing board games , reading and jumping on the trampoline. The cottage had a great selection of games, books and dvds that our kids just loved. Elizabeth have great tips, was easy and quick to communicate with and the house was full of lovely gestures such as fresh bread, herbal soaps and moisturizers. The location was just magic. We will be back !!!

    Danielle2020-01-27T00:00:00Z
  • A lovely little cottage, very clean and lots of extra little touches. We would happily stay again, thank you

    Leanne2020-01-01T00:00:00Z
  • A very cosy and functional cottage to stay in for the six of us. The outdoor areas were great to have a fire, run around or jump on the trampoline. Easy drive to the Mountain Bike tracks which are some of the top in Victoria! Elizabeth was a great host - quick responses, very helpful on mountain biking and local area!

  • Beautiful house and garden, we had a lovely weekend 😊

    Emma2019-10-06T00:00:00Z
  • Our family had a wonderful stay at Elizabeth’s place! We arrived to a warm fire heater in the lounge and artisan bread, butter and jam in the kitchen. The house is beautifully and thoughtfully decorated, the beds were very comfortable and the kitchen was equipped with everything we could have needed. The kids loved the trampoline, large garden and all the games and puzzles on offer. The property is about 5min drive to Forrest which has fantastic mountain bike trails so an ideal base for anyone wanting to ride. Elizabeth was a wonderful host and we hope to visit again soon!

    Mara2019-10-02T00:00:00Z
  • We had the most enjoyable stay at Elizabeth’s cottage. The cottage is thoughtfully decorated with vintage touches and modern conveniences. Our son loved the trampoline, great selection of kids toys, DVDs and books and searching for the koala in the trees across the road. We loved the huge backyard, day bed on the front porch and the overall charm of the cottage. In summer months you might be lucky to meet Wally next door who runs a berry farm. We bought eggs, home made muffins, meringues, blueberries and raspberry sorbet. It really made our stay extra special. Elizabeth was the perfect host. She prepared the cottage beautifully ahead of our arrival and left us a note recommending things to do and letting us know what was on that weekend. The home made bread she left us was delicious. A wonderful retreat from city life.

    Fiona2019-01-29T00:00:00Z
  • A wonderful escape in the beautiful countryside. There is lots of outdoor space to run around, play games and BBQ. The cottage is super family friendly, perfect for our 3 year old and 4 month old baby. The cottage is decorated beautifully and has extremely comfortable beds. Very good location close to the Great Ocean Road and other local attractions. Lots of lovely products and little touches to use which was a very nice touch. We had a wonderful time and hope to return again in the future.

    Carly2019-01-16T00:00:00Z
  • Elizabeth had prepared a delicious bread for us, something perfect for breakfast. His house aspires to rest, to relax. Many games for young and old, warm decoration. The countryside around is beautiful, the beaches are not so far. We had a very good stay. We all recommend unanimously. Domitilla

  • The stay at Y Vue was FANTASTIC! Incredible views, we sat by the fire both nights and the spa was so lovely on a cool night. Absolutely loved it here and will definitely be back again, have already recommended to all my friends and colleagues. Only 200m from the pub for a nice (but a bit expensive) dinner and drinks, again - with a beautiful view. Thank you so much for having us Mary!

    Bella2020-03-08T00:00:00Z
  • The most spectacular place to wake up to the sunrise from bed. Phenomenal location. We got married at the pub and stayed at Mary’s place, it was perfect

  • By far my favourite weekend experience staying in an Air Bnb in Victoria. This place has everything you could possibly need for a romantic weekend away. The views are absolutely spectacular (there is even an ocean view from the bed), the bed is beyond comfortable, there is a fire pit for you to enjoy during the evenings and who can forget to mention to amazing hot tub looking over the beach. We really enjoyed the easy access path to the beach when we chose to venture out from the house. You cannot fault this place and it's comfort level. We had some sunny days and some rainy days and it was equally as beautiful in whatever weather came our way. Mary was super responsive and helpful. Thank you so much for an amazing stay.

    Sophie2020-02-18T00:00:00Z

30 acres of magnificent Otway Forest just 15 minutes from Lorne. Attractions include our walking track with creek and scenic views. Enjoy our native parrots and kangaroos. This place is great for family holidays or a couples getaway. Each cabin has its own special views, wood burning BBQ and outdoor setting. All cabins are set far enough apart to maintain privacy. Secluded, romantic getaways or just peace and quiet at a budget price.
  • We loved our stay at Phil and Christine’s place. Phil is so friendly and knowledgeable about the local area, with great tips on where to eat. The property is gorgeous and plenty of local wildlife to keep you entertained. Nice to switch off and enjoy the bush. Thanks Phil and Christine!!

    Gemma2020-03-09T00:00:00Z
  • Such a stunning location! Phil is a delight - he is so positive, helpful & and just an all round top guy. If you love nature & being surrounded by beautiful birds, roos & wildlife, the cabins are for you. The cabins are very clean and fully functional. Only a 15 minute drive into Lorne centre - one night Phil arranged return taxis for us which was super helpful. Would definitely recommend as it is such amazing value for money!

    Liss2020-02-27T00:00:00Z
  • It’s a nice spot over there - to be in the middle of nature, but with all the basic comforts inside the cabin. A short drive to Lorne for a morning coffee or evening dining. Best suited for those who want to almost completely retreat from the noice and distractions of modern city life. Even Internet is not available, unless on the bad mobile network connection.

  • I’m in two minds about recommending this place as it is so nice I want to keep it a secret. Stunning views, stylish accommodation, wood fire and exceptionally comfortable. Nicest place I’ve stayed on AirBnb and Sue gave us a very warm welcome. A must stay for anyone visiting Forest.

    Chris2020-03-09T00:00:00Z
  • Sue’s place was amazing. It definitely exceeded our expectations and was spacious for a group of 3. It was comfortable and we were surrounded by lovely views. Would highly recommend to anyone visiting the Great Ocean Road.

    Elle2020-02-16T00:00:00Z
  • Sue was a lovely host. We loved the cottage, especially the cosy fireplace and great views! Highly recommended.

    Margot2020-02-02T00:00:00Z
  • Sue is an excellent host. The cottage was spotless and so spacious. The perfect ending to our day was watching the sunset on the deck with a glass of wine. The scenery was the perfect backdrop. However, the highlight of my stay was seeing a little koala in the tree beside the cottage. Such a beautiful idyllic place to spend the long weekend. Highly recommend!

    Mairead2020-01-27T00:00:00Z
  • If you’re looking for a romantic getaway, in nature and with a fire place, this is your place to go! I did some yoga on the patio, with an amazing view over the valley. Highly recommended.

    Iris2020-01-25T00:00:00Z
  • Sue’s place exceeded our expectations. Check in and out was so easy and Sue came to greet us on arrival and make sure everything was okay which was lovely. The view was spectacular! Especially watching the sunset from the deck over a wine and dinner. The kitchen and bathrooms had everything you could think of and the cottage was very spacious for two couples. Sue’s local tips were spot on and she was very easy to communicate with. Highly recommended and hope to stay again soon.

    Jenna2020-01-15T00:00:00Z
  • Sue’s cottage was idyllically stunning! The views and ambiance were a delight, and the place made coming home at the end of the day feel comforting and warm. The kitchen is well equiped and the two ensuite bathrooms gave us that little extra space. Perfect for a couple or a couple of couples, there’s plenty of local tips to enjoy a beautiful stay in Forrest. Yaugher View was sparklingly clean as well, which just made everything feel as tranquil as the rolling hills that surround it. Sue was a wonderful host, it was lovely to briefly meet her as well. Thanks again for a lovely stay, we can’t wait to come back!

    Jordan2020-01-12T00:00:00Z
  • We had a great stay at Sue’s place, it was very comfortable, had all the facilities we needed and lovely rural views to enjoy while having a wine or beer at night. It made for a great base to explore the area, hire bikes in Forrest, walk Lake Elizabeth, and venture down to the coast. Would highly recommend.

  • We booked the Tiny House for some guests while the rest of us stayed in the main house. Our guests really enjoyed their stay! The house had everything they needed, was warm and comfortable, and gave them their own space and privacy. They enjoyed waking up to the sound of kookaburras, and we were lucky enough to spot a koala too! The location of the property is a real drawcard, being right next to Forrest's famous mountain bike trails. The booking process was smooth and Ryan was easy to deal with.

Lorne is situated on Victoria's Great Ocean Road, an easy 2 hour (approx) drive from Melbourne. Lorne is a unique coastal town in Australia located within the Otway Ranges. It has stunning natural beauty within a north-east facing, forest covered, amphitheater. Yet, the town also has a sophistication not experienced in many other coastal areas. The commercial area is contained within one main street that provides all manner of boutique shopping, a cinema, and high quality cafe's and restaurants. Given the Grand Pacific Hotel is located just meters from the apartment, its hard to go past for great ocean views, quality meals, craft beer, and friendly service. We also love 'Ipsos' a Greek restaurant with a long family history in Lorne and 'Movida' (a Melbourne Spanish icon) which has expanded to the lower level of the Lorne Hotel. The quality restaurants include Mexican, Japanese, Indian, Italian and an iconic burger joint called 'Bottle of Milk'. The best breakfast is probably at the Swing Bridge Cafe, located literally where the Erskine river meets the ocean. If you like eating on the beach, the Beach Pavilion has fantastic food with great winter specials. Good coffee spots abound in Lorne - try 'Moons', 'Swing Bridge Cafe', 'HAH'.
  • This place was well appointed, very comfortable and in the perfect location. All you have to do is walk across the street towards the pier and turn left and there’s a lovely path that goes right along the ocean, and there’s also a path that goes along the road. So you’re away from all the noise but easy walking distance to everything you want and if you don’t wanna walk too far there’s a hotel just a couple feet away that you could eat at or have a beer or glass of wine and watch the ocean.

    Teri2020-03-04T00:00:00Z

  • Our stay at Yan Yurt Farm was a treat. From the warm welcome we received on arrival, the walk around the farm, our visit to the Cobb house (a must see) and chatting around the camp fire with new friends. A cosy bed at the end of a long day followed by a delicious breakfast next morning consisting of home made muesli, freshly baked bread, fruit, and yoghurt. Our visit to the more than a century old wool shed was an education as was watching Andrew tend his sheep. The farm has been in the family for 6 generations so you will get all the information on the local area from Jill and Andrew. The home itself is a comfortable homstead style, spacious and rustic with creature comforts. Ideally located a short drive to Lorne and the Great Ocean Road.

    Rosemary2020-03-09T00:00:00Z
  • We had a great time at the farm. Each day started out with a nice breakfast with freshly baked bread. Jill and Andrew provided lots of local tips of what to see and do in the surrounding area. Learning about their 115 year long history on the farm as well as the farm tour was a highlight. The entire family is very dedicated to the environment which was great to see. Definitely recommend staying here, something different from the typical Great Ocean Road stays!

    Anja2020-02-11T00:00:00Z
  • A very good place to be for just some days when you need a break or also for a longer stay.

    Gela2020-02-06T00:00:00Z
  • This is a working farm and if you want to learn about sheep farming and experience rural life this is the place for you. Great hospitality, good breakfast. Quick to respond to emails and gave good suggestions about local attractions. Would stay again.

  • We enjoyed two great days at Yan Yan Gurt. The hospitality of Jill and Andrew is exceptional. We felt very welcome at their home. Their way of living and managing the farm is very inspiring. The room is cozy and the shared kitchen clean and well equipped with everything you need. The breakfast that Jill and Andrew provide is just a perfect start into the day: fresh peaches from their trees, organic yoghurt and bread, jam, butter, etc. We definitely recommend everyone to stay their - it is a perfect place for making unforgettable memories.

    Daniel2020-01-08T00:00:00Z
  • Jill’s farm is about 1 hour driving from Lorne and we caught one of the most amazing sunset on the way to the farm. The stay was really cosy and Jill welcomed us warmly, it is perfect for road trip and people like farm stay.

  • Great place great people ! Lovely time together !

    Stan2019-12-24T00:00:00Z
  • Jill is a wonderful host with a friendly demeanour who made us feel very welcome. The room was clean and spacious with a comfortable bed. We shared the bathroom with the family but at no time did we feel uncomfortable. There were ample options for breakfast that Jill had put out for us and she also has an awesome tea mixture that she makes herself. This is a working farm and we appreciated everything that Jill provided.

Unique 3 bedroom house in beautiful Birregurra. Only 3 minutes drive from Brae. Walk to the local pub, restaurants and shops. Play cricket, kick the footy or have a hit of tennis on the recreation centre across the road. Bring your clubs for a hit of golf and hit the surf only 30 minutes drive. Enjoy the local outdoor market every second Sunday of the month which has everything from hot food, ice cream, local fruits and vegetables as well as hand made produce. Charming country atmosphere.
3 bedrooms, large full kitchen, large living/lounging space with wood burning fire, comfortable leather couches and chairs. Lots of books to read or music to listen to. Relaxing, comfortable beds with extra bedding/blankets. The house has a story to tell. Originally it was built as a large industrial shed for local furniture maker Rodney Gray. Little bits were added on here and there including a show room (which is now the kitchen) then later a bigger show room ( now the living room ) other bedrooms were tacked on as required. The house is apart of the shed however it is completely walled off. Rodney was quite a well known character about town, often referred to as “The Gray Rat” as he was rather thin and spent most of his time amongst timber shavings. He dedicated a lot of his time to community projects, one of such the famous Birregurra Weekend Festival. Sadly he ran the festival from a scooter cart as his illness was beginning to take his life, determined to see out the festival he was and with great success. He is sadly missed. If you go the Royal Mail hotel feel free to ask any of the locals there in the bar about Rod and I’m sure they’ll happily tell you all a yarn or ten!
Across the road there is the Birregurra recreation reserve which includes football oval, cricket pitch and tennis court. A lovely stroll to the golf course. 2 blocks from the main st of Birregurra and 3 minutes drive to BRAE. 5 minutes walk to the Main Street So much to do in Birregurra and only 30 minutes drive to LORNE.
  • We absolutely loved our stay here. The house was absolutely gorgeous, very clean and tidy. Hosts were lovely and communication was fast. Would definitely stay here again :)

  • I had a great time staying at Nikky's place in Birregurra. I really enjoyed the large living space, cool objects and personal flair. You get the sense that the place is a work-in-progress but it's already good. Nikky made me feel right at home with easy check-in and check-out. Just 100 or so metres from the main Birregurra street too, so you easily walk to the local restaurants and pub.

A gorgeous original timber millers cottage,. Lovingly restored as holiday accommodation retaining all its character and charm. Kero has beautiful timber paneled windows overlooking the George River. relax and enjoy the tranquil surrounds.
  • Kero cottage was the best place to stay for a little getaway from the city! It’s a little secluded which was lovely, but also close enough to everything that we were able to make the most out of what Lorne has to offer. The profile photos do not do it justice...The cottage is adorable and it’s surroundings are beautiful. Would recommend for a short stay for a couple or small group/family who are keen to enjoy some peace and quiet :)

  • This house is a real paradise. We had an amazing weekend in the middle of nature. Kangooroo, Koalas, birds, small barbecue, drink by the fire. Unbelievable. Beautiful house and really well decorated.

  • We absolute loved our stay at Kero Cabin, it was really cozy and peaceful with the river running out the front and being surrounded by trees and greenery. The cabin itself was super clean and comfortable. It felt like we were deep inthe forest despite only being a 5 minute drive from the town. Lastly Charles was super helpful giving us local tips on some great walking tracks.

  • The cottage is very rustic and may need a spruce here and there, but overall is right for the price and a wonderful space. We were pleased to find the bathroom is spacious with shower over bath and washing machine facilities. The cottage itself stands fairly away from neighbours and feels private. The area is very quiet, relaxing and peaceful. The birds are very talkative in the mornings which is wonderful! The bed is exceptionally comfortable and we loved the skylight. The location is great, close to so many wonderful parts of the Otway Forest to visit. We loved our stay :) Thank you!

  • The cottage was very lovely and full of characters. We don't have Telstra but still have 4G phone network. The kitchen had everything we needed and even more! The cottage remained reasonably cool even on very hot days. We would definitely book again.

  • Lovely little quaint place. Perfect for a good R n R time away. Heads up thou, unless you're on telstra , there is not mobile data coverage in the area. The bed has been moved away from the skylight but also for good reason as it can get quite bright in the morning.

Really private, Lovely deck, Big Views. Nordic cool aesthetic with stunning ocean and garden views 4kms from Lorne. The Cabin is a hand built, open plan and fully self-contained space that sleeps two. It features a stylish timeless interior with many quality design pieces and is perfect for a serene getaway. The Cabin's a hideaway that understands its commitment to the environment.
There is one luxury bedroom that has a plush handmade solid wood Queen bed with luxury linen, a dresser, wardrobe and stunning leather couch with soft luxurious cushions. There is everything you could want to feel spoilt and have a romantic farm escape. If you’re a couple or travelling solo, the Cabin is the perfect haven to experience seclusion and privacy. The property has beautiful gentle slopes that lead into deep tree fern gullies and over the next 16 years we developed an extensive landscape of European and Australian native plants, shrubs and trees, which is ever changing with the seasons. The farm garden has now matured. You will find an abundance of herbs, some fruits, foliage and flowers, which are picked annually and are grown using organic practices. We hope that others will get as much enjoyment out of experiencing The Cabin as we have had creating this special place.
Kangaroos live in the area, the big greys, you will see them mostly dawn and dusk. They will be active on the property so don't be afraid, do not approach them. Our friendly Kookaburras, they will come and sit by you on the deck waiting for slithers of fresh meat only.
  • A beautiful place to escape to, away from the tourist trail. Expansive views across immaculate gardens, through gum trees to the ocean. Watching sunrise from the bedroom was an absolute highlight, as was making use of the fabulously well-equipped kitchen.

Welcome to Echoview @forrest_moments on instagram. Disconnect to re connect with no wifi !! An idyllic 44-ha property near Forrest, close to the Great Otway National Park and some of Victoria's premier mountain bike trails. Drive through the bush, through our farm gate and be blown away with the view. Your gorgeous little luxury mountain cattleman's hut with your own private 5-ha lake in the foreground. Breathtaking. Perfect for those craving nature and seclusion.
Forty-four hectares of bush, lake and idyllic farmland. The rustic looking house might appear to be a mountain cattleman’s hut but it is modern and comfortable. The exterior is made almost entirely of recycled materials, including timber salvaged from wharves along the Murray River (close your eyes and just imagine the paddle steamers once tethered to this wood in years gone by). The surfaces are roughly hewn and scarred, with remnant bolts trailing orange rust steaks down the wall. There’s something enchanting about the way the aging corrugated iron and timber invokes the Australian landscape. At night in summer the house clicks and ticks as it cools down, accompanying the sound of the bird life on the lake. Inside there’s a combined living and kitchen area. The kitchen is fully equipped with a gas stove, electric oven, dishwasher and an old warhorse fridge and microwave, as well as all the necessary pots, pans, crockery and cutlery; all you need is a little imagination - and glass of wine, of course. Sit around the 6/8 seat dining table and invite your friends to join you. The wood heater will be set, ready to enjoy. Relax on the comfy sofa with the fire lit and the birds chirping…. let yourself drift away. Downstairs you will find two bedrooms both with queen-sized beds. The master bedroom features beautiful wooden external doors which open to views of the lake. A central bathroom with shower over bath is also downstairs. The mezzanine level above features a bedroom with two more queen-sized beds, as well as a DVD player and a selection of movies to choose from. This lake-house is made for entertaining – or just relaxing. Get busy in the kitchen and rustle up a gourmet meal to impress your guests. Or just grab a pair of binoculars (and perhaps a glass of wine!) sit on the deck and watch the bird life on the lake stretching before you.
There are world-renowned mountain bike tracks in the forest surrounding the farm. Exploring nearby beautiful Lake Elizabeth is a delight. Look out for a platypus! But you may simply prefer to explore our own scenic property, or walk through the adjacent bushland. The boundaries of the property are the forest on one side and the river on the other. Only minutes away you will find the local pub, Forrest Brewery (restaurant), a general store/café/milk bar and a chocolate shop/café. Birregurra (25 minutes) has interesting shops and a pub as well as a regular market. There are also local wineries. The Otway Fly is about 20 minutes away and there are many local waterfalls, and of course the beach at Apollo Bay on the Great Ocean Road is only half an hour away!
  • Great secluded little place to get away!

    Kathryn2020-02-07T00:00:00Z

  • A wonderful place on a gorgeous property. I can’t recommend it highly enough. The lake was a magical feature and we just soaked up the relaxing ambience. Lots of great things to do and see locally but we also just relished being able to stay on the property and have the whole space to ourselves.

  • Echoview is one of the most spectacular and relaxing places I have ever been too. It is a truly amazing experience

    Lora2019-09-15T00:00:00Z
  • We loved our stay at Echoview! Stayed with 4 guests and there was more than enough space. Beautiful views to wake up to each day and thoughtful touches with styling the home. We saw kangaroos and echidnas on our walks around the property. The birdlife is also amazing. We asked to stay an extra night as we didn’t feel ready to leave, it was so peaceful and relaxing there. We had one issue with the fireplace which seemed to not be working properly, but the host Ellen was lovely and very responsive and got the caretaker to sort out a workaround solution immediately. Highly recommend, it would be a great place for families too

They are amazing hosts, quick and communicative. Super thankful to have found it. The experience is unforgettable, city nearby. Ugh, can’t say enough positivity. DO IT! Also, super cute inside. Water heats up super quick. No problems. Honestly, if I didn’t live in the states I’d ask to live here full time :) thanks so much!

Our space is a converted barn and private bathroom on our 34 acre Deans Marsh property. The property is in the north eastern foothills of The Otways, 10 minutes drive from Deans Marsh General Store. There are seemingly infinite views over Victoria's Western District to the north and north west from the barn and front lawn area. There are some Pinot Noir vines, some paddocks, and a treed gully and you're welcome to wander around the whole 34 acres.
The barn sleeps up to 5. It has a king sized bed, a bunk bed and a single trundle and is ideal for couples or families with up to three kids. There is a coffee machine with pods, bar fridge with milk, toaster and basic cutlery and crockery in the barn. So no real "kitchenette" or cooking facilities although you can use our BBQ on request. The bathroom is in the adjacent house, accessed via a covered walkway and private entrance and is exclusively yours for the duration of your stay. My husband, Andy, and I live in the main house with our 3 kids and 2 Boxers - Basil and Polly. The house is right next to the barn so you'll see and hear us from time to time. Internet access in the area is poor. We have a satellite connection but can only offer wifi access to this in emergencies because the monthly quota is so low. The only good option is Telstra mobile. Reception is poor or non-existent for other mobile carriers. Please note that we are flexible with guest numbers up to a maximum of 5 but that guests additional to the number booked are charged an extra $15 per person per night. Infants are excluded from this if you bring a portacot and bedding.
Deans Marsh is approximately half way between Winchelsea and Lorne, to the north of The Otways and around 100 minutes from Melbourne. The Deans Marsh Store is the epicentre of Deans Marsh and has good healthy food, coffee, local wines, beers and produce in addition to staples. Lorne is just 22 minutes drive from Deans Marsh and has a great beaches, restaurants and cafes and recreational attractions such as Live Wire Park. Forrest is also a hub for recreational activities such as mountain biking and bushwalking. There are wineries, berry and olive farms in Deans Marsh and the surrounding areas of Bambra and Pennyroyal and quite a vibrant dining scene in Lorne, Birregurra (Brae!) and Forrest (Bespoke Harvest, Forrest Brewing Company, etc.) And of course, The Otways themselves with superb waterfalls, open Eucalypt forest and amazing cool temperate rainforest.
