The Arches is an attractive stone barn conversion providing excellent self-catering holiday cottage accommodation, perfect for cosy country evenings in front of a roaring log burning stove.
The Arches is an attractive stone barn conversion providing excellent self-catering holiday cottage accommodation. The Arches lies within the heart of the picturesque village of Otterburn. Otterburn is situated on the edge of the Northumberland National Park on the A696, being a perfect overnight stop for those en-route to and from Scotland and for guests attending the various wedding venues at Woodhill Hall ( approximately 1 mile), Le Petit Chateau ( approximately 250 metres) and Otterburn Castle Hotel (approximately 300 metres). This charming two-storey cottage, comprises a one master bedroom with a king size bedroom and feature beams to the ceiling with an ensuite shower room to the first floor. To the ground floor living area there is a fully equipped solid oak kitchen with a spacious dining area, perfect for entertaining. Leading of the open plan kitchen there is a wood burner within the living area which is perfect for cosy country evenings in front of a roaring fire. The Arches forms part of the owners larger property ‘Sunnybrae’ but is completely self-contained providing an ideal base for those wishing to explore the unspoiled and historic landscapes of Northumbria. Although the Arches is a one bedroom cottage, it does however have the facilities to sleep more upon request. Well behaved pets are welcome! Please advise on booking. Accommodation Details Ground floor: Kitchen/dining room with oven, microwave, dishwasher and fridge freezer. Living room with wood burner, freeview TV with built in DVD player. Toilet. First floor: Bedroom Double bed, hairdryer, iron and ironing board Bathroom Outside: Courtyard with table and chairs. Fuel, Oil CH and gas hob. Parking for The Arches is to the side of the property, on the stoned drive/courtyard with table and chairs any issues please contact us. The house can be accessed directly by guests, who are given a code to a key box on the outside of the house. Check in from 2pm and check out by 11am. We are always available to guests by phone, text or email. If you would like to meet up for a chat about what's available locally I would be happy to call in, but generally I would leave you to enjoy the house without interruption. The neighbourhood is peaceful, the silence only broken by the sound of birds both wild and domesticated and the odd vocal sheep. The domesticated variety of bird are actually very well behaved. Ideally your own car is the best way to get around. There are buses that run to Jedburgh and Newcastle but are fairly infrequent. Otterburn does however provide a good base point for walkers and cyclists looking to explore the Northumberland countryside. Otterburn Castle and the Border Reiver village shop (which stocks virtually anything and everything) are easily accessed on foot from the property. We will provide one basket full of logs for the wood burner. We will also provide some essentials, such as tea, coffee and sugar. Please just ask us for further information prior to your stay as we will try to accommodate for all guests as best that we can.

  • The Arches is beautifully appointed and spotlessly clean. It was wonderful to get the log burner going; so cosy. Erika and Steve are great hosts who added some lovely touches such as milk and Prosecco! We were attending a wedding locally, so didn't venture out of Otterburn, but it's ideally placed for exploring the borders and fantastic value.

  • We have just returned from a three night stay at Stargazers and can honestly say it was amazing. The beautiful apartment is large, light and airy and at the same time cosy and homely with the most amazing views. The weather was kind to us so we got to see a spectacular night sky. We hope to return soon 😀

The facilities and decor are excellent and the grounds were great for family walks with our dog. We are already talking about when we might return..in fact we had some trouble persuading the the youngest member of our group (3 years old) to leave! Would highly recommend.

The standard of the bathrooms and quirky touches in the bedrooms were also really good. Would love to return!

Just 45 minutes from Newcastle and the A1, Otterburn is a lovely little spot in Northumberland National Park. Otterburn village itself is a mile down the road with a gastro pub, castle (with restaurant) and general store, and there's also a great restaurant and takeway on the site itself. Woodland walks abound (from your doorstep) with local attractions such as Kielder Water and Hadrian's Wall just a short drive away. We've left a welcome pack in the cabin with some of our favourite walks, attractions and places to eat.
  • Fantastic lodge, on the end so no overlooking neighbours to one side. Lovely hot tub, really well designed inside, perfect location for dog walks and fantastic we could bring our dog with us. Really recommend staying here.

  • We had a fantastic stay here. We were sent all the necessary information (and more) prior to out stay so our arrival was made extremely easy. The information folders in the accommodation ensured that our stay ran smoothly. The accommodation is immaculately clean and very well equipped. We have also had excellent follow up service after stupidly leaving some items in the accommodation. We would definitely recommend this accommodation.

    Marie2020-02-17T00:00:00Z
  • Richard and Debs are wonderful hosts. We had a fantastic time at their place! Everything was perfect and the hot tub in the snow was the icing on the cake! Our three boys loved it, and there was lots for them to see and do all around. We shall definitely be recommending this amazing place to our friends and hopefully be back ourselves in the not too distant future. Many thanks Richard and Debs.

A luxurious 3 bed cottage in beautiful grounds handy for the village of Corbridge and 2 miles from the historic market town of Hexham. Hidden down a short track at the edge of the hamlet of Sandhoe, it is a truly tranquil spot.
Peartree Cottage lies on the south side of the Tyne Valley just above the village of Corbridge and 2 miles to the historic market town of Hexham. Hidden down a short track at the edge of the hamlet of Sandhoe, it is a truly tranquil spot. Situated in just under an acre of gardens overlooking a wild flower meadow, this three bedroomed cottage is in one of the most attractive areas of Northumberland but is also handy for some the best pubs and restaurants in the Tyne Valley. Just a couple of miles from the Roman site of Corstopitum, the cottage is in the heart of the key walking areas in the region with the Roman Wall just seven miles away. The ground floor is open plan dining, kitchen and sitting area with a wood burning stove which combined with underfloor heating makes the cottage cosy even in winter months. There is a downstairs twin bedded bedroom with an en-suite bathroom with both a shower and separate bath. Up the spiral staircase is a twin bedded room, a double bedroom and an upstairs bathroom.
It's a very quiet, idyllic spot but handy for an Award winning pub, villages and a Market Town.

    Barrie2019-09-01T00:00:00Z
  • A well equipped and beautifully presented house, with lovely grounds. Communication was good and the hosts friendly. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, and the house is in a great position for exploring Hadrian's wall, in addition to a relatively close drive to the National Parks and the coast if wanted. A great base for exploring the country, and the many walks from here.

    Charlotte2019-08-28T00:00:00Z

This delightful and cosy, single-storey, detached holiday cottage has been furnished to a high standard and has pleasant views across open countryside. It sits on the edge of the village, on the line of Hadrian’s Wall.
The sitting room has views across the countryside and the crags of the '9 nicks of Thirlwall along which Hadrian's Wall runs. There is a wood burning stove in this room and night storage heaters in all rooms. It has a separate kitchen / dining room ... Electric hob and oven, microwave, fridge, washing machine. There is a double bed room and a single bedroom. Bathroom with electric shower over bath. A small outdoor shed stores portable Bbq and fuel (included) for the wood burner.
It is 4 miles to the shops and facilities of Haltwhistle and 8 miles to Brampton. The historic city of Carlisle and town of Hexham are each about 17 miles.
  • Highly recommended, as good as it gets.

    Chris2020-03-01T00:00:00Z
  • The cottage was as advertised. It was spacious and clean, perfect for the two of us and could have accommodated more with the second bedroom. The views and location were fab, especially if you’re looking to go on long walks.

  • David’s place is warm and comfortable. It is a great space for exploring Hadrian’s Wall!

    Deb2020-01-08T00:00:00Z
  • Fab cosy cottage with a lovely wood burner and everything you need for a few days away including kitchen utensils etc, fuel for log burner, extra heater, torch and hi-viz jackets (for the walk to the pub in the dark, nice food and not too expensive) and book with some great walks in. We had a lovely New Year here and throughly enjoyed our stay at the cottage. Its location is fabulous, little light pollution so the sky at night is amazing and theres lots of choice for great walks around the area. We did popping stones and Houseasteads to Steel Crags and Vindolanda. We definitely recommend this cottage for a break away in this beautiful part of the country.

  • Wonderful little cottage in the secluded village of Gilsland. It was easy to find and David and Hillary were wonderful hosts. We spent a quiet little Christmas up here after getting married in July and had a fab time. Thank you!

    Rhi2019-12-28T00:00:00Z
  • Ideally situated and furnished, David's cottage will satisfy any traveller. One last improvement, David should do something to prevent the rain from falling when guests are willing to stay in Gilsland !

    Jean Philippe2019-11-24T00:00:00Z
  • This is a comfortable cottage, very clean and well maintained. David is very helpful and quick to communicate. A good place to stay to visit the Roman Wall with walks right from the door. Gilsland is a nice village with a really friendly pub just a minute or two away serving excellent food and beer. (good range of gins and whisky too) It also has an excellent tearoom.

    David2019-11-10T00:00:00Z
  • A very comfortable, well equipped and clean space. This is a fairly easy walking distance to the likes of Birdoswald Roman Fort on Hadrian's Wall and a great location if you're wanting to walk a little further too. The property is not far from the main A69 which makes it very easy to get to places like Hexham, Newcastle and Carlisle. I felt safe and welcomed in the property. Added touches such as high-viz jackets, magazines and a detailed description of the local area all made for an enjoyable stay.

We are 3 miles from the historic village of Corbridge with its great shops, pubs and restaurants, one and a half miles from Hadrian's Wall, 20 minutes from airport and 25 minutes from Newcastle. This is a newly refurbished old stable which is a cosy hideaway in the Tyne Valley. Extensive walks are available on this working farm. It is good for couples, solo adventurers, business travellers, and dogs (sorry, no cats). Sadly owing to recent experiences we now need to charge £5 per dog per night.
  • A lovely, characterful cottage on a farm in a beautiful area of the country. We wouldn’t have changed anything.

  • Ailsa's Cottage is a delight and exactly as it is described, a warm, cosy and very welcoming cottage. It has everything you may need plus being perfecty situated to enjoy the stunning Northumbrian countryside and local attractions. My partner, dog and I spent a wonderful couple of nights there, it was not nearly long enough! It is Ailsa's little attentions to detail that set this cottage apart from many, I cannot rate it highly enough.

    Holly2020-01-18T00:00:00Z
  • I really don't have the words to say how beautiful this little cottage is and how much we enjoyed our stay. We spent most of our time walking and exploring around the beautiful areas or sat in front of the fire in the cottage relaxing. Lovely little touches, beautiful views, super clean and cosy and just what we needed for a break away from normal life 😁 We can't wait to come back! Thank you so much for having us and making sure we had everything we needed. Would 100 percent recommend anyone to stay here xx

    Katie2020-01-02T00:00:00Z
  • Excellent spacious, warm and cosy accommodation. Easy to get to in a stunning area of the UK. Ailsa a great host. Corbridge is delightful and Roman Museum worth visit, exceptionally well done if you are interested in the history of the region. As is Hadrians wall. If you are National Trust Members go to Housestead to walk the Wall as you can use your Card there.

Sorry I can't provide breakfast due to being a terrible cook. Please feel free to bring your own porridge or there are lots of options in the village. The bathroom is next door to the bedroom. Myself, my grown up son (very rarely spotted) & elderly Labradoodle live on the premises. The only guests will be you as I only rent 1 room & we are very used to guests coming & going, doing their own thing etc. There is a secure lock up for bikes.
The Sheep can get quite noisy at times.
  • I literally gasped at the view from our bedroom window, looking out on to the river with pheasants and hares in the fields outside. The house is perched at the edge of the countryside and staying here felt timeless. At night we saw owls and starry skies, but it's also a short walk to a pretty village with some decent amenities. Glenda made us very welcome and the house was clean and comfortable, with a wonderful wood burning stove for a cold night. We were very taken with the giant dog!

  • Location is great as it's a scenic 15min walk along the river to the village which has a few pubs, not too long of a drive from Kielder too. The house is really clean, Glenda gave us free reign of the downstairs- kitchen, very stylish and cosy living room, bedroom and bathroom. Glenda was a very easy going and caring host. Thanks again! Roy's Room is part of the Scotchcoulthard Farm and Holiday Cottages business. It is a twin room with an en-suite shower room, fridge, kettle, toaster, TV. There are three cottages in total along with a games room. Scotchcoulthard is set north of Hadrian's Wall just seven miles from Haltwhistle, the Centre of Britain. Not another inhabited dwelling can be seen. Dogs are welcome and we have our own who will greet you.
Set on a small farm within 180 acres it is surrounded by splendid scenery with magnificent views and not another inhabited dwelling in sight. Roy's Room looks out onto the chicken are where the sound of clucking chickens can be very soothing. You get the full experience of being on a farm and can buy the eggs. Fortunately, we do not have a cockerel! Scotchcoulthard is four miles away from The Military Road (B6318 which runs parallel to Hadrian's Wall). The last farm you pass is two miles away. If you want to really 'get away from it all' it is ideal. For those who prefer a more populated area it is not ideal! The farm track from the road is ½ mile long and can be a bit rough at times. However if taken slowly it is fine. Dogs are welcome and our own dogs will welcome you. There is no extra charge and no restriction on number. For those who love dogs but don't have any, our dogs are happy to step into the breach! Naturally there is plenty of wildlife. Red squirrels live in the surrounding forest along with badgers, deer, buzzards, foxes and many others. The nearest town of Haltwhistle (named Centre of Britain) is seven miles away. It has a couple of supermarkets and local shops for most essentials. It has its own unique history including a 13th century church with stained glass windows made by William Morris & Co. in 1872. The windows were the work of Edward Burne-Jones, Ford Maddox Brown and Philip Webb who were Pre-Raphelite artists. There are many walks in and around Haltwhistle with two walking festivals a year. A burn running through Haltwhistle has a spectacular walk through beautiful scenery. There is a Swimming and Leisure Centre with outdoor pool open from Easter until September.
Scotchcoulthard Farm and Self-Catering Holiday Cottages is situated four miles north of Hadrian's Wall in The Northumberland National Park at its most spectacular part. It is halfway between Carlisle and Hexham on the edge of Wark Forest which leads into Kielder Forest. It is necessary to cross the wall to reach Scotchcoulthard and the sites of Housesteads, Vindolanda and The Roman Army Museum are only a short distance away. Although remote, Scotchcoulthard is not isolated. It is possible to be parked in The Metro Centre, Newcastle, Carlisle, The Lake District or Scotland within the hour.
  • This location is in the middle of 'nothing', as far as you would call the rugged nature. A fantastic place for lovers of peace and quiet. Walk into your door from the hills. You will undoubtedly come across some sheep. And ... just maybe ... a lost farmer?

  • Susan and her husband were really kind, providing us food for our foot trip! A lovely place to stay, in the middle of the grasslands and we learnt a lot of the history of the county! A really good experience!

    Thibaud2019-09-04T00:00:00Z
  • a wonderful place

    Lizzy2019-07-28T00:00:00Z
  • This is a really nice place to stay, I stayed in 'Roy's room' which was good value for a solo traveller such as myself, with a small kitchen and a comfortable room (sleeps 2). If you are a cyclist, it is just off Sustrans route 68, and the track to the farmhouse is cycleable with a little care (actually a better surface than some of the next 3 miles or so of route 68 northwards which is on forest tracks). I was just staying for one night, but the facilities are great if you are staying for longer, including access to both a swimming pool and games room on-site. The kitchenette in the room can be used to prepare simple meals, with a single ring and a microwave; there is also a larger kitchen that can be accessed if required.

    Duncan2019-07-19T00:00:00Z
  • We felt so at home we almost forgot to leave! 😀

    Judy2019-06-15T00:00:00Z
  • Roy’s Room at the farm was wonderful! The bed was very comfy and it was so nice to disconnect from the world for a little bit. I unfortunately woke up unwell so I didn’t get to explore as much as I wanted to but this gives me the perfect incentive to visit again!

    Dominika2019-05-31T00:00:00Z
  • Susan's place it perfect for an overnight stay while hiking Hadrian's wall and had everything one needs for a well rested night before setting off again. We stayed in "Roy's Room" which would be comparable to a motel / hotel room. It is nice, clean & comfy. We did see the cottages and they look wonderful. Susan is a fantastic host, we were cold wet and tired after a long day hiking in some challenging terrain. She picked us up at the Twice Brewed Inn and took proper care of us, we really enjoyed meeting her. Jason & Lisa

  • Bramble Cottage is a very comfortable well appointed cottage in an excellent location. Karen is a thoughtful host who responds to all questions very promptly.

    Kevin2020-03-06T00:00:00Z
  • Bramble cottage was the perfect place to stay for our trip to Hadrian's wall and Kielder forest. Self check in was easy with the lockbox and parking right outside the front door. Karen had kindly left a bottle of wine for us to enjoy as well as some biscuits to go with the coffee pods provided. The cottage was comfortable and had all the pots, pans and utensils that we needed to cook a few meals. The bed was soft and the towels fluffy. I'd definitely recommend a stay here.

We have to offer fantastic views, bags of peace and quiet at a "get away from it all" venue. We have converted a Shepherd's bothy with beds for four to suit walkers and families alike. This has been converted to a high standard with a single bedroom, separate bathroom with shower and an open plan living and kitchen area with wood burning stove as we aim to offer this accommodation year round. The bothy is located on the edge of the Kielder Water Resevoir next to our home, High Hawkhope Cottage.
We live very close to Kielder water in the heart of the Northumberland National Park.
  • We loved our stay in the Bothy, the location was perfect! Plenty of gorgeous walks close by, secluded and peaceful. The kitchen has everything you could need to rustle up meals. We got the fire going and the place warmed up quite quickly, only suggestion would be to bring slippers along as the floor is quite cold. But the place was super clean, would stay again 😊😊😊 thank you

    Riah2020-03-08T00:00:00Z
  • You couldn’t get much closer to Kielder water with lovely forest path around the reservoir. Diane’s place is small but ideal for short weekend stay. If your lucky you’ll get to see the badger that comes into the garden to feed. On a clear night it would be the ideal place for star gazing.

    Rachel2020-02-09T00:00:00Z
  • We really enjoyed our stay here. Perfect location for exploring Kielder forest and has everything you need to be comfortable. Loved the wildlife, especially the local badger. Great hospitality and would stay again without a doubt.

  • I booked Diane's place as a surprise present for my Dad's 60th. Although I did not stay there myself, Diane was very easy to communicate with, making all arrangements run very smoothly. My parents have given the place their recommendation (high praise indeed!), so I hope to visit when I next explore the area.

  • We stayed in The Tack Room and it was just so lovely. Every room was spotless but felt so homely. The views from the bedroom and living room were amazing and there was even binoculars and a little book where you could jot down any wildlife you spotted. The bed was really comfortable and the heating kept us nice and toasty. It was so peaceful and quiet which made it even better for our two dogs as they could mooch around in the garden area with no worry at all. Would definitely stay again.

    Jade2019-12-27T00:00:00Z
  • Lovely cottage in a quiet, beautiful spot. Spacious and clean, perfect for the two of us and our pup. Lots of space out back for him to roam around. Great location for walks in the local area and a few dog friendly pubs too. Charlotte was very helpful with recommendations and tips. Check in and out was super simple. The cottage had everything we needed for a few chilled days away. Recommended!

  • Despite atrocious weather, we really enjoyed our stay in Jennifer's place. It's a great location, clean and warm. Hope to stay here again!

    Dave2020-03-01T00:00:00Z
  • Jennifer was an excellent communicator from the start of the booking through to the end of our week in Bellingham. The cottage was clean and well equipped, lovely and warm, comfortable and fully met all of our needs for our holiday. Jennifer also left some extra touches to make our stay all that better and was kind and considerate throughout. The weather was a bit unkind to us during our week but that just made the views from this upside cottage all the more interesting and photogenic. The Cheviot pub over the road was spot on with friendly locals and good grub. We highly recommend Jennifer as a host and her cottage as a place to stay if you are visiting this wonderful, magical part of England.

get back to nature with our exclusive camping pitches on the river bank in the Scottish Borders. We offer tranquillity on our small site nestled along a riverbank, with a young woodland and fields to explore. Get away from it all, truly switch off at this camp site on our quiet farm, located near Bonchester Bridge, Hawick in the Scottish Borders just over an hours drive from Newcastle, Carlisle & Edinburgh. £10 per person £5 for children per night This is a pitch only nothing else provided.
We've noticed that if someone books a pitch on Air BnB then the whole calendar blocks off. There may still be pitches available. Please contact us through our website to enquire about booking if you cant do so on here. rueduchateau co uk Our exclusive pitches are along the riverbank. We offer only a small number of pitches to retain the peace and solitude of the spot. On sunny days you are welcome to try a bit of swimming. We have two flat fields that stretch along the riverbank, you are welcome to explore along these, and there are lots of walks nearby. Ground is grassy and can be bumpy in places. No hook-ups, only basic facilities - a horse trailer nearby houses a small toilet. There is limited or no phone reception depending on your network. There are mature trees that offer hammock pitches. It is a short walk from where you park your car at the main farm, which you cannot see from the pitches. Wheelbarrows available to help transport belongings to pitches. Children and dogs are welcome but we ask that they are not left unsupervised at any time, and dogs remain on leads and any mess is collected, it is a magical spot to enjoy, but not run wild, please respect other guests. Fire pits are available but no camp fires on the ground. Bags of logs are £5 each. Fresh water, electric charging points, kettle for hot water, available on request in the farm courtyard which is a small walk away, (where you will leave your car). The Cross Keys in Denholm is a 15 minute drive for great pub food. A twenty minute drive takes you to Hawick for supplies, including supermarkets and an Outdoor Supply shop halfway up the High Street at the Traffic Crossing.
  • Fabulous place, remote but close to amenities , quiet peaceful and exactly as described _! Don’t be put off by the horse trailer toilet - it’s actually really just exactly what’s needed.

  • Excellent accommodation in a beautiful area. Julie and Andrew welcomed us onto their accommodation giving advice about the area and even offered us a lift back from the nearest pub in the evening. The house was immaculate and like new. We wouldn’t change a thing!

    Kate2019-08-28T00:00:00Z
  • We stayed at Andrew & Julie's place for 3 nights. They are wonderful host. Response is pretty instant. Place was so clean and nicely maintained. There were so many thoughts went in for the interior design. They did offer a nice tips around this place to visit. There are plenty of public foot path where you have nice scenery walk. Can have easy and nice walk to Hadrian's Wall. It is kids friendly place. I would certainly recommend to stay. We would also hoping to visit again. Best wishes Andrew & Julie.

  • We had a fantastic 3 nights in this lovely cottage. It is in a perfect location with fabulous scenery. The interior is to a very high spec with lots of attention to detail. Julie and Andrew were wonderful hosts going out of their way to ensure we had an enjoyable stay. If you are wanting to stay in a rural location and explore this beautiful part of Northumberland then I can highly recommend staying here.

Cosy self catering cottage set in the tranquility of the stunning North Tyne Valley. Ideally located for the Kielder Observatory and the beauty of the Northumberland National Park
Black Reiver Bothy is set in the midst of a sheep farming community. This is a significant part of the reason that we specify no dogs. You will be in the small hamlet of Donkleywood, 1.5 miles from the nearest village of Falstone which has a pub and a tea room. The road between Falstone and Donkleywood is single track with no marked passing places and no street lighting. The larger village of Bellingham is about 10 miles, 20 minutes, drive away and has a small, but well stocked Co-op, a pharmacy a petrol station, an 18 hole golf course and a number of pubs and cafes.
Located both in the Northumberland National Park and Europe’s largest international dark sky park, on a clear day the views are just as stunning after dark as they are by daylight. Kielder Water and Kielder Forest are less than 3 miles away providing excellent opportunities for walking and cycling. The lakeside path offers the opportunity for accessing a range of permanent artwork installations. There are a number of visitor attractions and eateries on the lakeside and at Kielder village including a bird of prey centre, the sky space and the Kielder Observatory. A little further afield, about 40 minutes drive you can be on Hadrian’s Wall. For those of you planning a longer stay and keen to explore more of Northumberland, Alnwick Castle, used for the outdoor filming of Hogwarts in the Harry Potter films and Alnwick Gardens are over an hours drive away but the journey there will reward you with seemingly endless views of open countryside. A little beyond Alnwick is one of Northumberland’s best kept secrets, it’s coastline offering miles of sandy beaches, a number of castles, Lindisfarne and boat trips out to the Farne Islands for sightings of puffins or seals depending on the time of year.
  • Really lovely place to stay, no issues whatsoever. Would absolutely recommend.

  • We had a wonderful time staying at Mandy’s place. The bothy was beautiful, clean and cosy. Mandy was always communicative and helped with directions, planning for the weather and activities. The bothy is within very easy reach of Kielder for walks and the observatory. We’d love to come again!

  • This was our second visit to Riever Bothey. If you want a rural and peaceful getaway, you cant go wrong with this property and Mandy. The house is a good size for either 2 or 4 people and the log fire is my personal fav element. There is wifi, but the if you want a retreat from the digital world, there is no telly and phone signal, so it's a great way to spend quality time with friends/family.... no distractions. Keilder is a short drive away where you can spend hours walking. Mandy is a great host, always on hand to help if needed, but never interferes with your stay.

    Chris2020-02-16T00:00:00Z
  • Amazing house in beautiful surroundings. Amanda was extremely helpful and welcoming. A lovely stay even in a storm - the house has everything you need for a cosy night in but also would have been the perfect location for hiking/cycling/visiting the observatory if we had been luckier with the weather. Thank you, Amanda!

    Ellen2020-02-11T00:00:00Z
  • What a lovely weekend away. Started with a warm welcome from both Mandy and the log burner. A great base for exploring the local area, it was hard to drag ourselves away from the cosines of the fire to go outside. Bottle of bubbly in the fridge and a box of chocolates on the sofa were just some of the extra touches that made us feel very welcome. Storm Ciara hit overnight and meant some of the roads become impassable as we were due to leave. Mandy assured us, she said stay here, keep warm, and she would keep us updated on the road conditions according. Amazing property and even better host. Thank you :)

  • Beautiful place and lovely friendly host

    Kate2020-02-06T00:00:00Z
  • A great place to stay. Surprisingly spacious with great amenities. The location was perfect for us - remote but only a short drive to the local village for a pub meal. We were also only a 25 minute drive from Kielder Observatory, which was perfect for what we had planned. Mandy even provided thoughtful little touches such as milk, tea and coffee, towels, toiletries. Would definitely recommend this cottage and hosts, Mandy really made us feel welcome. Would definitely return. Thank you!

A snug cottage bedroom at Larriston Farm - a mid 19th century farm steading around a cobbled courtyard. We're in a very rural setting, 20-25 minutes' drive from Kielder Water, the observatory and also Newcastleton. Dogs welcome (provided they like our Border Collie Meg, and our cat). We offer breakfast and you're welcome to use the kitchen to cook an evening meal. We have another double room too - check our other listing.
We are very close to Kielder observatory - its about a 20-25 minute drive
Larriston Farm is set in 28 acres of with its own stretch of river. All of it is accessible for walks and exploring on foot, by mountain bike or on horseback. Being right on the edge of the Kielder Dark Skies Reserve, there are some stunning views of the stars and Milky Way.
  • Lovely warm welcome from our hosts. Such a lovely experience staying in their warm and cosy accommodation. A delightful stay will await you at Larriston and we hope to come back! The new rooms also look really fantastic and treat for any visitors coming to stay.

  • Excellent pit stop on our road trip! We booked Mark & Allans place for our trip to kielder observatory, but due to the weather the event was cancelled, so we will be returning to stay. The place is lovely and clean and in a beautiful spot. There is not much around but the hosts are on hand should you need any recommendations for food or tips of places to go. Thanks again!

  • We had a lovely one-night break at Mark & Alan's for our recent trip to the Kielder Observatory. Being only a 20-min drive away in a remote and secluded area we couldn't have got much closer really. Mark & Alan communicated fantastically and were at hand to help out with recommendations on local places to eat beforehand and for walks the next morning, however, the weather was not on our side unfortunately so we decided to just head home and abandon our walk (an excuse to go back!) We had the best nights sleep we've had in a while as it was so quiet and the bed was very comfortable. The view from the bathroom was also fantastic, shame I didn't have time for a bath to look out and enjoy the view! We enjoyed breakfast the next morning having a nice chat with Mark & Alan for over an hour learning more about the local area and their story on how they ended up at Larriston Farm and even managed to get a sneak peek of their recently renovated 4-bed cottage next door (absolutely stunning!!) which we would also love to stay in one time, whether by ourselves or hire the entire place out to enjoy with friends or family. Thanks again for a great stay!

    Katie2020-02-23T00:00:00Z
  • We booked to stay here as we had also booked to go to Kielder Observatory. Mark and Allan were fab hosts, super friendly and had a beautiful home. They made us feel very welcome and the room was just as described, very clean and cosy. Location is great and Mark made it clear it was fine to come home late after the Observatory experience. It's around a 15 min drive to the turn off for Kielder Observatory and then another 10 minute ish drive up the track to the actual Observatory. Overall, fab stay with fab hosts and a lovely dog too! Thanks again x

  • Great welcome, fantastic scenery, lovely walks, very friendly

    Jenny2020-02-06T00:00:00Z
  • I booked an evening away for my parents as they were doing a late night event at Kielder Observatory. I messaged Mark to say they would be back late (or rather at 3am so quite early) and he was more than welcoming about it. My mum and dad had a wonderful stay and were pleased at how convenient the location was so they weren't driving far in the dark. Mark was amazing with communicating with me and sent very detailed and clear instructions on how to find them meaning my parents didn't get lost at all. I forgot to message and let Mark know when they would be arriving but this didn't cause any problems. Mark recommended a lovely place for them to have dinner and the whole experience was very enjoyable for them.

  • This was our second visit to Larriston and it lived up to our great impression from three years ago. Mark is very accommodating especially regarding a late return from Keilder Observatory. Our bedroom was cosy and warm and provided a super night's rest. The continental breakfast is a bonus. Having seen around the lovely new rooms in the cottage, we can look forward to our next stay - very soon we hope.

Situated in Northumberland, on the edge of the Wark region of the vast Kielder Forest, the Bothy at Churnsike Lodge is uniquely placed to access a wide range of the area's most beautiful locations and iconic attractions. From here, the wide expanses of Kielder beckon, offering miles of forest tracks and diverse environments to explore, replete with breathtaking views and perfect silence - ideal for those who are in search of peace and quiet. For more information, search 'Churnsike Lodge'
Built in 1850 by the Charlton Family of nearby Hesleyside Hall, Churnsike Lodge was originally intended as a Hunting Lodge, to provide accommodation for the Charlton’s and their shooting companions as they roamed the Kielder moors for grouse. The Bothy, once the abode of the resident gamekeeper, now serves as a private holiday home for any and all guests aspiring to a restful and relaxing stay in one of England's last truly remote locations.
Churnsike Lodge is situated in perhaps one of the most remote locations within the county of Northumberland and benefits from all the stunning views and splendour that nature has to offer within the wider Northumberland National Park. The property is located within Kielder Forest, the largest man-made forest in Europe, offering miles of tranquil walks through commercial coniferous forest interspersed with ancient woodland, moorland and elevated viewpoints across the vast Kielder fells. Peace and relaxation abounds, however guests must be aware that, being a working forest, in the course of their ramblings they may come across active felling sites. These sites are few, far between and may be freely traversed provided walkers act with responsibility when coming into proximity with felling operations.

Cute cosy upside down archway house, with large Family/double room (can sleep 3 and a travel cot), kitchenette and living space upstairs, with bathroom and spare bedroom downstairs (sleeps 1) . 2 off road parking spaces available with the beauties of Northumberland on the door step. Co-op, post office, Chinese takeaway, pubs, beautiful local walks, churches, the North Tyne, cafes, information centre, fishing and childrens parks all a stones throw away from the property.
The house has a large bedroom with a Double bed, fitted with a new memory foam mattress topper. There is room to pull out the single sofa bed or erect the travel cot. Down stairs is a single bed room, with games and toys available. The living area has leather seating, fold down table and a small kitchenette. The views overlook a gorgeous old church. I'd say Tyne View is ideal for a couple or a small family.
Cute country village, with great routes to wonderful places in Northumberland. In the village we have many amenities and wonderful pubs and restaurants. We also have a beautiful water fall a short walk up a Linn.
  • A perfect little house for a getaway, a visit to the beautiful surrounding area, or a business stop-over. It has a great balance of being homely, without being too personalised. Parking is easy, as is access (check-in). The nearby pubs are friendly and welcoming. Shelley (the host) is great at communicating and was kind enough to leave fresh milk; there was also tea, coffee, cleaning products and 'honesty' toothbrushes available. I'll definitely re-book if I'm in the area again.

Shelley was kind enough to leave some milk too. I arrived when it was dark (and it was dark) and I made an error in accessing the property but Shelley came to my assistance swiftly. I wouldn’t hesitate to stay again and recommend to friends and family. Thanks again.

A cosy cottage bedroom at Larriston Farm - a mid 19th century farm steading around a cobbled courtyard. We're 20 minutes' drive from Kielder and the observatory, and Newcastleton, in a very rural setting amongst fields, woods, hills and rivers. Dogs welcome (provided they like our Border Collie Meg and our cat). We offer breakfast and you're welcome to use the kitchen to cook an evening meal. We have two double rooms - check our other listing too.
Larriston is right on the English border in a very, very rural part of the world. In the Scottish Borders, right on the edge of Kielder Forest and Northumberland National Park. If you want to get away from it all, then really this is the place! Hermitage castle is close by, and it’s not much of a drive to a host of other places including for example Jedburgh, Carlisle or even Hadrian’s Wall. Newcastleton has mountain bike trails, and the local roads are perfect for road cycling.
  • We had a lovely stay at Marks and Allans B&B. The room and bathroom were cosy and clean. We slept like babies because the bed is very comfortable and because the place is so remote it is very silent. Mark and Allan are just the most lovely hosts! Such a pleasure to spend time with them during breakfast! We totally fell in love with Meg, the dog. The most clever and sweet dog we’ve ever met. We were there during the Corona-outbreak. We thought it’s the most save place to be during these days because you meet very little people... The best quarantine...😀 No but seriously the place is just beautiful, the area wildly beautiful. We’re happy we know about this treasure. Thank you Mark and Allan. We hope to come back.

Mark gave us very good tips for places to visit in the area. Our trip to the observatory was cancelled due to poor weather but we had a great weekend nonetheless - nice local pubs and beautiful walks. Thank you, we hope to come back again soon!

  • The 4 bedroom house at Larriston Farm is going to be ideal for groups of walkers, mountain bikers, star gazers, along with families looking to have a weekend away and reconnect with nature. The beds are very comfortable and the large lounge has a lovely log burner but no television so remember to bring books and games to play. The kitchen is very well equipped with a large range cooker, microwave, toaster, coffee maker, washing machine and cutlery. Breakfast consists of croissants and cereals with milk, tea and coffee but don’t forget to bring bread for your toast. The WiFi works well throughout the house but not outside it and there is no signal for mobiles in the local area. Overall this is a great house to stay at with a great host.

  • We loved this place!!! Ideally suited for walking, great road connections and lots of brilliant walking tips. We brought our 2 dogs with us and they were welcomed into the place fantastically. We were a bit worried about not being able to choose where to go for food, but the bay horse has a fantastic menu and everything we tried was delicious! The room was spacious and clean.

  • Cute pub with character & charm in a fairly remote location - perfect for exploring Kielder forest with access to the Northumbrian coast. Friendly staff, great full cooked breakfast and dinner in the pub (steak & ale pie) was delicious too. The room & bathroom were much bigger than expected. Great value!

  • Fantastic cottage, lovely fire, spotless and comfy beds and pillows. It’s more like home from home . Woofer friendly garden and the pub across the road was fantastic . We visited the Kielder Observatory late night visit. Great places to visit - restored my fair in Air bnb .

  • Fantastic accommodation, the cottage is warm and cosy , a home from home. Everything you could possibly want has been provided. Great place to stay as a base for exploring Kielder and the surrounding areas. Would highly recommend a stay here. Pub opposite is a bonus as very friendly and great food.

  • This is a fantastic hidden gem of a cottage! The photos don’t do it justice, it’s a beautiful building, full of character. Half historical touches, half top class renovation with done real originality. All the amenities you’d expect. Location is absolutely fantastic. Less than 10 minutes drive from Kielder Water, tons to do in the local area, close to Hadrians Wall attractions. Lots of local walks and lunch spots. Really helpful information in the house folder!

    Demi2020-03-08T00:00:00Z
  • Lovely cosy cottage, spotlessly clean, lovely comfy beds, everything you need for a comfortable stay. Would thoroughly recommend

  • Beautiful cottage and excellent value for money!

    Natalie2020-02-18T00:00:00Z
  • We enjoyed a comfortable and warm 2 night stay here, it was a perfect short break for my husband's birthday....despite the adverse weather due to Storms Ciara and Dennis!!! The log fire is lovely and the cottage warms up very quickly. The main bedroom is charmingly decorated and the bed is very comfortable! We didn't make much use of the kitchen, the outside space or the second room but Clare's Cottage would be a good option for families as it is spacious and has all the facilities you would need for a larger party or longer stay. The area itself is wonderful, it is dark and quiet which makes it great for unwinding and switching off. There are good walks and hikes all around the area and good food options. The inn across the road is lovely for a bite, and we really loved the dinner we had at The Pheasant Inn nearby! 10/10

The Old Duck House is a very cosy, luxury, self-catering holiday cottage on the edge of Northumberland National Park, near Alnwick, Cragside, Hadrian's Wall and Rothbury, as well as Bamburgh, Craster and Seahouses on Northumberland's Heritage Coast. The Old Duck House is a detached cottage close to the burn, making it ideal for spotting aquatic wildlife.
Entry is directly into a compact combined kitchen and living area with original exposed beams and two small windows directly overlooking the Wreigh Burn. The kitchen area has oak block work surfaces, tiled walls and an integrated oven, hob, microwave and refrigerator. Immediately alongside the kitchen area is the living area, which comprises two wing-back armchairs, a terracotta tiled floor with underfloor heating and a delightful little wood-burning stove. There is a wall-mounted flat-screen television with Freeview and cupboards over, as well as small folding tables for dining. Through a door immediately to the left of the kitchen area is a comfortably equipped shower room with wc and basin. Another farmhouse oak door off the living area provides access to a very small bedroom with a double bed, overhead storage cupboards, wall-mounted television and DAB radio. Immediately outside is a fully enclosed patio area suitable for pets, with table and chairs from which to enjoy the evening sun. Please note the accommodation in The Old Duck House is small and is only suitable for two adults (there is no room for a cot or high chair). However, if space is not your priority and you enjoy watching the wildlife on the burn close up, this is the cottage for you. One advantage is that in winter The Old Duck House takes seconds to warm up when you return from a long walk! Free Wi-Fi is available in this cottage On-Site Tennis and Play Equipment For use solely by our guests, there are two acres of lawned grounds surrounding the cottages at Burnfoot and a championship tennis court, newly constructed in 2009. There are secure storage racks for bicycles and there is a range of outdoor play equipment for children, including climbing frame, swings and a slide. As well as feeding the ponies, young imaginations can be fired by the otters, deer, badgers, salmon, owls, kingfishers and many other rare birds that can be seen regularly from the cottages. Burnfoot is named due to it being where two streams (burns) meet and it is the perfect place for exploration and adventure, but not at the expense of parents' peace of mind. We have three young children ourselves and appreciate their need to challenge themselves in as safe an environment as we can possibly make it. Neither of the streams can be accessed without scaling a wall or a gate, and the children's play area is located well away from cars entering the farm.
Netherton village is just a short walk from the cottages (approximately ¼ mile). The village boasts The Star Inn, an unspoilt gem of a pub. Privately owned and unchanged in 80 years, it is one of only ten in England and Wales to have appeared in every single one of CAMRA's Good Beer Guide since it was first published in 1974 - it is certainly an experience! Rothbury, only a ten-minute drive away, benefits from a supermarket, bakeries, restaurants, and tearooms, as well as a wealth of antique and craft shops and art galleries. The award-winning delicatessen and independent grocer, Tully's of Rothbury, can deliver food and beverages, including organic ready-to-eat meals, direct to all the holiday cottages at Burnfoot. Rothbury also has comprehensive healthcare facilities in case of emergency. The nearest petrol stations are in Powburn and Alnwick. Burnfoot was a working farm until very recently, the steading being used for grain drying and storage as well as housing livestock. However, the buildings were not large enough to cope with modern farming methods and so in 2005 all farming activity ceased. Many of the surrounding fields were planted with trees and permission was granted to convert the steading for residential use. Today, with Netherton's close proximity to Northumberland National Park, tourism is becoming the prominent industry with visitor numbers increasing every year. More information about the history of the holiday cottages can be found on an information board at the mill pond, and we strongly recommend all of our guests to spend a day at Cragside House, not just to get lost in the rhododendron labyrinth and adventure playground, but to see the original hydro-electricity plants in action. There's even a working model of the turbine used at Burnfoot! There are several lovely walks that can be taken direct from Burnfoot - following the burn down towards the River Coquet; following the road past the fish pass to Netherton village and beyond into the National Park; or following the burn upstream into the Cheviot Hills. You could quite easily fill your holiday with a different walk from your front door each day. For the more adventurous there are many bracing hill walks which take you into the heart of the Cheviot, and to the summit of The Cheviot itself. Many of these walks are described well at www.cheviotwalks.co.uk. The National Park visitor centre in also Rothbury has a wealth of information including leaflets for dozens of breathtaking walks in the vicinity. The website also holds much useful information: www.northumberlandnationalpark.org.uk. In the welcome pack in your cottage will be a shortlist of some of our favourites as there are simply too many to list on the website.
  • Lovely week in the Old Duck House. Surrounding areas were beautiful with a lot of great walks on your doorstep. House was really clean, nicely decorated and they left us Prosecco and biscuits which was a bonus!

    Oliver2020-03-20T00:00:00Z
  • What a find! I booked the place as a surprise trip for my partner's birthday and it delivered... A cosy hut with all you need for the perfect weekend away. Everything was clean and neat and the details from wooden duck figurines through the photo of the duck house before it was reconstructed, to kitchen cupboard handles, electric sockets, and the beautiful fireplace spot were all very well thought-out.

    Mariana2020-03-15T00:00:00Z
  • The duck house is the perfect little get away and I can honestly say I don’t think I’ve had a better nights sleep. The best bed!

  • Our stay at the Duck House was fantastic, communication from our hosts was easy and informative. We arrived with no fuss and were able to access the cottage upon arrival. The cottage itself was beautiful, sparkling clean and the finish to an excellent, modern standard. Upon arrival we were left Prosecco and biscuits inside the cottage which was a lovely touch. The location was only a short drive from lots of walks and small towns/villages, which was so easy for us to access and get to! We went to Simonside Hills and Rothbury during our stay which was only a short drive from Netherton and gorgeous! I would definitely stay here again, it was also dog friendly which is a big plus for me as I love to take my dog away for a little holiday too! Thanks for excellent hosting and a wonderful stay!

The house is situated in Bellingham, in the heart of the North Tyne valley (17 miles from Hexham) within walking distance of all the town’s amenities. An exquisite base (with consistently high reviews) for exploring the tranquil local landscapes, by foot or wheel, close to the River North Tyne (fishing permits available), the International Dark Sky park and Kielder observatory. We have officially the darkest skies in England; from the back garden over 2000 stars can be seen on a clear night.
The house has two bedrooms, one has a single bed and one a twin which can be zipped together to create a super-king size bed. There is a kitchen equipped with toaster, dishwasher. electric oven, microwave, fridge, small freezer and kettle. The lounge is large and includes a dining table and TV. The bathroom has a bath and shower over the bath, it also includes a washing machine and tumble drier. There are gardens at both back and front of the property and a seating area too. The back of the cottage overlooks fields. There is a shed in the garden in which a bbq can be found (guests can use this at their leisure) and bikes can be stored here too, if they need locking away that can also be arranged.
The town is the capital of the North Tyne, it has a butchers shop, a newsagent, a bakers, a chemist, three pubs and is in an area renown for natural beauty. The whole area has wonderful dark skies and there are two observatories within 10 miles of the cottage. There is a local golf club which welcomes day visitors.
  • The cottage was emaculate throughout in a lovely part of Northumberland. Norma was a fantastic host and we had great communication throughout. We visited Kielder Observatory which is only a 30 minute drive away (must book in advance though) and is a must if you are interested in astronomy. Lovely walks direct from the cottage and further afield. The only downside to the stay was having to come home. 2 days just wasn't long enough!

    Diane2020-03-02T00:00:00Z

  • We had a great time staying at Rachel’s Heron cottage. The communication was super easy and quick and the place looks exactly like it does on the pictures. Very well appointed a home away from home! The cottage is in a quiet and beautiful location next to a river but also an easy walk to shops and pubs. Would absolutely recommend to stay there!

  • Really lovely cottage in a stunning location. The pictures don’t show the full extent of the space - we stayed with our three young children and it more than matched our expectations. Beautiful riverside walk into the village, still enjoyed despite the inclement weather! WiIl have to stay again, next time in the summer perhaps!

    Mark2020-02-23T00:00:00Z
  • The pictures dont do the cottage justice- its absolutely superb! Located right at the end of a long road on a farm. Right on the rivers edge the views are amazing. It had everything we needed for our stay. Rachel even provided a little snacks basket to get us started including bread and milk. Rachel was so friendly and always up for a chat everytime we saw her- she lived in another property on the same site. We would definitely stay here again!
