We are less than 4 miles from Giant City State Park. Less than 2 miles from Stone Creek Golf Course. The surrounding communities of Cobden, Alto Pass, Makanda and Anna offer a variety of artisan shops, antique and unique speciality stores, restaurants, taverns, bars ... and of course we are located right in the middle of the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail... a collection of 11 of the most unique wineries in the midwest.
  • The chalet was perfect; exactly what we wanted. It was comfortable and cozy but not skimpy. Full fridge, stove, and shower felt like home! The king bed was super comfy. The surrounding area offers great places and scenery to explore. I recommend the Little Grand Canyon for a nice hike!

Windy Hill Acres Inn is a 5 room cottage built in the 1840's out of local rock. It was used for many years as a potato house. The farmers stored their sweet potatoes during the winter, and would ship them to market in winter months. That way the farmer had a cash crop until spring. The cottage was made into a residence in early 1950, and used as a home for Bob's sister and husband until 2003 . .
When you book our Inn you are in the country, but really only 1 mile to a couple nice restaurants, and you are right on the wine trail.
We are very proud to be 8 miles from Giant City Park, and Lodge, 8 miles from Bald Knob Cross of Peace. You can be in Carbondale in less than 15 min. to the north, and 5 miles south to Anna.
  • Cozy cottage and great location. There is plenty to do and see in the area but not a lot of options for dining out. Be sure to bring supplies to eat in.

  • This is a quiet gem. Located just outside of the village of Cobden, walking distance for the adventurous, this 52 acre retreat is just what the doctor ordered for anyone who thrives on solitude and nature. From the "Strawberry Fields Forever," to the lovely pond, and the warm and hospitable personalities of Carol and Bob, this country retreat is idyllic!

  • This was a cute place close to town. Carol's check in was the best we ever had. She's a nice lady. The place was quiet and clean. I would highly recommend it.

  • This place was wonderful. I loved it. Affordable, clean, stylish and comfortable. I couldn't believe I got it for so cheap. Highly recommend for anyone traveling to Carbondale.

    Jason2020-03-23T00:00:00Z
  • PROS: Easy check-in. We got in a bit late and Patrick was very quick to respond for any questions. There were plenty of clean towels provided and the shower was actually pretty nice. The basement also had a huge tv with netflix, a nice couch and a cute little electric “fireplace” which provided me with great amusement. We also appreciated the nice little touches they had (handwritten card for instructions and wifi password) CONS: You have to use street parking (not a big deal since there was plenty of space). Honestly, it was a great value for the price and we will love to come back and stay there again if we find ourselves in that area again.

Enjoy southern Illinois wineries and adventures while staying just off the beaten path. Whether by yourself or with a partner, MoJo Valley is the place for everyone! With three wineries within five miles and located in the heart of the Shawnee Hills forest, we look forward to hosting your next trip.
***COVID-19 UPDATE: In order to ensure a safe environment for our guests and employees, MoJo Valley Cottage will only be able to host one set of guests per week. This will allow us to ensure that the home is properly sanitized and free from any dangers to our guests. When you book your stay at MoJo Valley, you are guaranteed an enjoyable stay. Each reservation comes with one dozen farm fresh eggs from hens found on the property. The home comes with a queen bed and a sleeper sofa, as well as a full kitchen and bath. The home will be furnished with basic pantry items, a half gallon of milk, and orange juice. The nearest grocery store is approximately 15 minutes away and the nearest winery is just over a mile.
The home is located in the middle of the Shawnee National Forest and it is quite likely that you will see no traffic during your stay. Once you leave the property, you are a short distance from multiple wineries. Most nights, you will hear nothing more than nature and light breeze blowing through the woods.
  • This is the Forest getaway you want; great shower, porch, and kitchen. They were very friendly with sharing information and have a great eye for keeping a tidy, clean, and wholesome place.

  • Amazing spot to get away from all the bs in life

    Justin2020-02-16T00:00:00Z
  • How Don has his place advertised is what you will find when you arrive.

    Ty2019-12-16T00:00:00Z
  • Don & Hanna provided a truly 5-star vacation experience. Their rustic cabin was appointed with neat touches which stimulated the visual, acoustic, and tactile senses. Highlights included the antique desk and bathroom cabinet, the thoughtfully selected CD's of acoustic and jazz music, and the myriad classic novels that adorned almost every wall and shelf of the cabin. There was no Wi-Fi or cable, but with no lure of the outside world we could truly immerse ourselves in conversation over a board game while listening to Neil Young set against the sound of soft rain falling outside our window. The farm fresh eggs, muffin mix, and juice were the perfect cherry on top of a lovely weekend away from it all. Recommended for couples seeking a romantic retreat or single travelers looking to retreat from it all.

You will find almost a dozen types of wood incorporated into the architecture of this beautiful tiny home. Created by architectural home builder & furniture craftsman, Paul J. Frank, the design gives the tiny house a feel of a larger home while maintaining a cozy feel & simplicity. Located on the property of Center For Lost Arts, owners, Paul & Bonnie will be your hosts. Guests have access to the entire property including walking trails, pond & homegrown produce & herbs when available.
Guests have the tiny house to themselves and are welcome to come in and use our main kitchen, laundry etc. if needed. The tiny house is winter-ready with excellent insulation & radiant floor heating and summer friendly with an efficient air conditioning system. It's a sweet spot with a large window facing the forest and sunset. The loft has a raised ceiling(6"3) so it feels like a full bedroom up there where you can sleep with the stars. There is a full shower, toilet, and a basic kitchen(kettle, french press, toaster oven, fridge, crock pot, electric skillet & induction plate) and all cooking utensils and dishes. If you're missing anything we're happy to provide it. Small Weber grill and place for outdoor fires is available. Guests can bring their own bedding and towels and request a discount. Otherwise, we leave clean bedding for you to make the bed yourself. You can decided which way you want to sleep.
Such a great area. Southernmost Illinois is quite unique. You can read more about it under our Center For Lost Arts - Eva's Roost listing or in the guidebook.
  • This stay was so amazing! There were so many touches that they put into this house that made it so cozy and welcoming. Everyone was so nice and made sure I had everything I needed. If you are looking for a getaway to unwind and relax in nature this is the place to go!

  • Thank you to Bonnie and Paul for creating the most welcoming, warm space I've ever experienced. They made their entire property feel like home, especially the tiny house. It's everything you will need and more while in Southern IL. Plan to want to stay forever! We will definitely be back.

  • A MUST STAY GETAWAY IN SOUTHERN IL! My partner and I came to stay at Bonnie & Paul's tiny house for a weekend getaway. It was such a wonderful stay. Bonnie and Paul were outstanding. They were so kind and hospitable. We loved having a community dinner and bonfire with them and some of the other guests on the property. And the property, is beautiful. Zach and I loved walking around the lake and on the paths behind the houses. B&P also gave amazing recommendations of where to eat and hike. We will definitely be back again and HIGHLY RECOMMEND! A must stay/getaway in the Southern IL area!

    Brooke2020-02-02T00:00:00Z
  • Great place. Stayed when temperatures went below freezing and house was nice and cozy. Really great use of small space, wasn't cramped at all for 2 people. Amazing views and great access to parks. The towns nearby are a cherry on top. Cobden had a great restaurant and cool shops. Makanda had some really cool artistry. Both unexpected additions to a weekend checking out Giant City Park. All around wonderful stay. Couldn't recommend more.

    Robert2020-01-19T00:00:00Z
  • Absolutely gorgeous little place. Beautiful architecture. Artsy and cozy. Lovely grounds and trails...the heated floors were amAzing! So comfy and cozy! ♥️

  • I stayed here two nights while my mom was in the hospital in Carbondale. It was so peaceful, and Bonnie was so gracious. I loved being able to stop at Makanda Java for morning coffee and drive through Giant City State Park on my way to town every morning. Great place to stay (much better alt to Best Western!!)

  • Amazing place, pictures do not give it justice. The price for it is cheaper than most motels and you receive so much beautiful countryside and amazing amenities and thoughtful touches. Wish I could’ve stayed longer and the grill is an amazing touch.

    Nick2020-03-07T00:00:00Z
  • My family and I were in town last minute due to a family member being ill, we drove all night and I was exhausted! 13 hours of driving and no hotel would let us check in until 2, but Rebecca was very understanding and let us check-in early! Thank you so much, kept me from sleeping in the car lol! House was very clean, and the beds were exceedingly comfortable. There was even some food for breakfast, and coffee on hand. Thank you so much! You made such a difficult trip bearable!

    Beth2020-02-17T00:00:00Z
  • It was a wonderful stay.

    TyAngela2019-11-30T00:00:00Z
  • The house is a great space and had everything we needed for 3 adults and 3 small children to stay comfortably. The host went above and beyond and even secured a Pack n Play for our baby to sleep in, which was amazing. We were attending a reunion in Carbondale and it was only a 15 minute drive to get there. The coffee & milk provided really made our morning after such a long day of travel. We’d recommend this spot to anyone who needs a comfortable and cozy place to stay in the area.

The cabin was immaculate, had oodles of thoughtful amenities and special touches, and provided the retreat into beautiful nature and serenity we had been craving. • This place is a delightfully convenient combination of modern and rustic.

    Kelley2020-03-08T00:00:00Z
  • What a fantastic space! My husband and I took a weekend to visit the area, and this space was perfect for a couple! Sid and Nancy left some lovely amenities, which were so thoughtful! The cabin feels both rustic and modern, and the decor is perfect. We especially loved the “fireplace” heater and enjoyed curling up under the super soft blanket provided, on the very comfortable futon/couch while watching one of the provided movies. There were also a number of area brochures and guides, which were very helpful! We would absolutely stay here again in the future. The location is pretty central to a lot of places, and not far down the road is a beautiful look out point where you can watch the sun set.

    Teale2020-03-01T00:00:00Z
  • This place was absolutely amazing! Check in was super easy. The place was absolutely adorable and had everything you would need for a few days in the woods. It was close to tons of hiking trails! I needed a reset after a few difficult weeks and this place couldn't have been better for that. I will absolutely be booking again!

While the inside of the cottage is pet-free, some of our feline residents may choose to visit you on the deck or patio. While we would love to offer dog-friendly lodging, we have chosen not to, to ensure the safety of our felines.

  • This is such a beautiful, clean, cozy cottage! It's in a PRIME location if you're visiting for the outdoors! They have an amazing trail literally right next to the house that takes you to a breathtaking view. We only planned on staying one night and ended up staying two, and one was Easter! Our favorite part by far was that the house is on a cat sanctuary. The second we pulled up we had a welcoming committee of little kitties run up to our car and greet us. We will definitely be back!

    Angelo2020-04-12T00:00:00Z
  • Mila's place is fantastic. To start, the location is great if you want to visit some of the vineyards in the area, some are walking distance from her place. Second, the cabin itself is wonderful: spacious, clean, with everything you may need to spend a relaxing vacation there. Mila was also great communicating with us and giving us recommendations on places to go and events happening nearby during our visit. If I went to the area, I wouldn't think it twice and I'd definitely book her place.

    Brian2020-03-15T00:00:00Z
  • Lovely place to stay!

    Stephanie2020-01-05T00:00:00Z
  • This is a great cottage to stay in. It had everything we needed and more. The only mark I would give would be for the mattresses. None of us slept well on memory foam but it isn't enough of a mark to not stay there again so I gave it a 5 star. It was super clean, they had added amenities that weren't an additional cost, we felt very comfortable and "at home." I would definitely recommend this as a wonderful place to stay.

    Robbie2019-11-29T00:00:00Z
  • Mila’s place is cozy and nicely decorated. She provided snacks and local drink for us to try out. She was also a careful host, warned us for the hunting seasons. We really enjoyed the stay.

  • Always a wonderful visit when we are able to stay in Michael’s sparkling clean home. This is our favorite place to stay when in Carbondale but it books up fast :) Michael has all the amenities you would ever need and more which makes for a wonderful vacation. We enjoyed making s’mores by the fire-pit in the back and he had all the supplies we needed. Thank you for lending us your home once again!

  • Michael thought of everything. There was snacks, breakfast food, chargers, and many other little things that could make a persons stay more comfortable. The house was very clean and cozy. He even asked what we liked for breakfast and made sure to have it there before we came. He made us feel very welcome in his communications and messages as well.

    Laura2020-03-31T00:00:00Z
  • From the outside, my first impression might have been misleading. Inside it is an eclectic, comfortable , and welcoming home. It has nice decorations and an easy layout, with an open kitchen and fun backyard space.

    Michael2020-03-26T00:00:00Z
  • Michael was a great host. Very stylish place, has an amazing record collection, and had personal touches added for us (it was my friends birthday and he had decorations and a cake waiting there for us!). Highly recommend. I also dare you to beat our r2d2 bop-it record :)

  • Second time staying at Michael’s and it was just as amazing as the first. Would go back again and highly recommend the space.

Located on the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail, Farmhouse Cellars is located within our working winery at Feather Hills Vineyard & Winery. You have the opportunity to look in on the wine making process while enjoying a quiet, comfortable place to rest your head. This is a large space with open kitchen, living and sleeping areas. The front porch offers a beautiful sunset while looking over the vineyards and you are but a short walk from our tasting room where you will enjoy a private tasting and tour.
Each stay guarantees a private tasting and tour by either the owners/winemakers or tasting room staff. The owners live on the property and are available for any issues/concerns. There is 60 acres for your enjoyment to get out and explore upon including some great bluffs and a large waterfall.
We are one of eleven wineries on the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail in Southern Illinois. There is excellent hiking and lakes for exploring near by. We are close to the Shawnee Hills zip lines and a short drive from several great restaurants
  • The apartment was very clean and nice. Renee was very nice and gave us a great tour of the place. The employee at the winery was very helpful and gave us a great wine tasting. We enjoyed the trip and would stay there again!

    Shelly2020-03-01T00:00:00Z
  • We enjoyed our stay at Feather Hills. The room was clean and had all the amenities to cook up a good meal. We would stay again if we did another trip to the Shawnee wineries.

    Tj2020-02-16T00:00:00Z
  • We were greeted by both of our hosts. After polite introductions and conversation, we proceeded to our complementary wine tour and behind-the-scenes Q&A experience. It was really fun learning more about the history of the winery in addition to the direction it is headed. Afterwards, we walked over to the tasting room for our complementary tasting. After sampling all of the wines, we retired to our room for awhile before heading back into Carbondale for dinner. The room wasn't too large, but was plenty of room for two people to feel comfortable and relaxed. Entering the room there's a kitchenette to the left outfitted with a full stove and oven, refrigerator and freezer, as well as a all-in-one coffee maker, toaster oven, and griddle. To the right is a two-person dinette situated under one of the two front windows. Directly in front of you will be a quaint living room area featuring a flat screen TV, disc player, and streaming device as well as a fold-out/reclining couch (with USB charging ports built-in!) The bedroom has a COMFORTABLE king-size bed flanked by two armoires, lights, and USB-compatible receptacles. Off of the bedroom is the bathroom with an amazingly large shower. Everything was clean, neat, organized and fresh. We made sure to leave it as we found it. Our hosts and accomodations were great. We wouldn't hesitate to stay again!

  • This is now my favorite place to stay on the wine trails! It’s very clean, host’s were extremely accommodating. It’s such a picturesque area with hiking or outdoor climbing nearby, and of course it’s right on the wine trail! My husband and I had a perfect weekend getaway here!

My place is close to great views, family-friendly activities, lakes, hunting, fishing, Shawnee Hills Wine Trail. My place is good for couples.

This cabin has everything you need to make your stay restful and soothing, with 750 square feet of living space all on one level. It offers one beautifully furnished bedroom with a queen bed, large dresser and a flat screen TV and DVD. The great room has a cozy stone, gas fireplace with a large flat screen TV above it. A comfortable couch and chair offer ample seating and lounging space. The full size kitchen has beautiful hickory cabinets stocked with everything you need to cook and serve your meals. With a refrigerator, stove, oven, microwave and dishwasher, you'll be able to prepare wonderful meals if you choose. Of course we also provide a toaster, coffee maker and wine cooler. For those of you who enjoy a steak or burger from the grill, you'll find a cast iron, gas grill on the screened in back porch. For added convenience we provide a washer and dryer as well. And the best part, we just put in a BRAND New hot tub!!! Perfect for the two of you! Soak away all your worries.   If you want to enjoy Mother Nature all you have to do is step outside. You'll love watching the deer graze while kicking back in the rocking chairs on the covered front porch. In the winter just snuggle up in front of the fireplace. We provide WiFi and movies.   We guarantee you'll never want to leave the Couple Retreat Cabin.
  • Wonderful spot to getaway. Comfy and clean. Very private, and peaceful. Beautiful waking up to the farm animals and farm dogs. Hot tub was our highlight! We will be back for hiking soon enough!

    Elizabeth2020-04-01T00:00:00Z
  • This cabin was exactly as described, if not more. We really enjoyed our weekend away from the reality of the real world. The hot tub was a perfect place to unwind. We also enjoyed the fire pit in the evenings. Every little detail was thought of and it was all greatly appreciated. We had fun playing the board games provided the night it rained. We definitely have plans to visit again!

    Renee2020-03-29T00:00:00Z
  • This cabin is a wonderful place to get away to! We would've stayed for weeks if we could have. Perfect combination of amenities and very private. Beautiful view off the front porch- the perfect spot if you're looking for a place to sit and listen to nature for a few minutes.

    Emily2020-03-18T00:00:00Z
  • The Couples Retreat cabin was even better than expected. It was very clean, and well maintained. Roomy, but cozy. I loved the binder with the Rules and local info and tips. If you're looking for a cozy getaway for two, this cabin hits all the right notes. The hot tub is well maintained and clean. Hours were spent in it. The screened porch around it allows for enjoying the weather and natural area. The dryer ensured our suits and towels were dry for the next days use. I also loved the movie rack and board games!! I havent played Chess in years and it was used several times during our stay! The cabin is far enough away from everything to enjoy the peace, yet town is only a short drive if you wanted dining or entertainment options. There are 2 flat screens and Wifi. There is satellite tv as well, though we barely used it. Overall, we are ear-marking this set of cabins for future visits! Highly recommend

  • This is the perfect place for a weekend getaway. We love hanging out in the hot tub! Super private space and beautiful location.

    Shauna2020-02-16T00:00:00Z
  • The cabin is very clean and comfortable. It has everything you need. The kitchen is well stocked. The hot tub is great. It has a feel of being way out in the country, but it's an easy drive to Carbondale for shopping or restaurants. Also close to Giant City State Park. Beautiful park with a lot of hiking trails. We loved seeing and hearing the birds next door. Peacocks, turkeys and other birds. The farm cats are really sweet. We enjoyed watching the deer walking all around the property. We would stay here again.

Plenty of opportunity for hiking and scenic drives in the Shawnee National Forest including Giant City State Park, Little Grand Canyon near Pomona and Panthers Den near Cobden. • Beautiful, quiet, relaxing. They sure thought of everything. I got in really late and there were snacks and water. The bedding was soft and luxurious and smelled so good.

    Emily2020-03-31T00:00:00Z
  • Great jumping off point to explore all the area has to offer! Very clean, cozy and a comfortable bed. Joe was a very responsive communicator which is always appreciated. Too much to see and do in one weekend. Great hiking in Little Grand Canyon (our new favorite in the Midwest!), Giant City and the totally different environment of Cache River State Natural Area. So many wineries but Bonnie at Lincoln Heritage down the road (not on the actual wine trail) was such a pleasure to talk to not only about wines but also the history of the area. Their Black Jack wine is fantastic. I wouldn’t hesitate to stay here again!

    Jay2019-11-09T00:00:00Z
  • Janice met me at the door and provided an overview of the layout of the house. This is the quaintest Airbnb I have stayed. It is a spotlessly clean older house with the perfect blend of modern and vintage touches and details. There were pamphlets in the room that provided information about the area. It is near a train track (which I personally loved as I like the sound of trains). Overall very pleasant stay.

    Margret2019-10-27T00:00:00Z
  • Janice and Greg have a beautifully redone home. The room was spacious, comfortable and very private. I enjoyed the scenic drive from Dongola to Cape that Janice suggested. I will be looking to come back for a longer stay with Janice & Greg to explore the naturelands surrounding them. This location is convenient to Carbondale and Cape Girardeau. This home is very near a train crossing - and as it has no gates/warnings the train is required to announce it's presence. I was not particularly bothered - but some light sleepers will be.

  • Tom’s cabin is seriously the perfect quick getaway. My boyfriend and I took a few days in the middle of the week to quarantine somewhere other than our home. We had an amazing time in the canoe, hiking the property and just relaxing in the cabin. It was clean, unique and so serene. Tom was an awesome host offering his dvd collection if we wanted and brought us down a fire. He was so welcoming and great to talk with. We can’t wait to come back!

  • Tiny house is amazing. My wife and I love places like this. The property is secluded and very private. There is a fire pit and firewood outside, a canoe and a small boat to take out on the pond. Tiny house sits right at the edge of the pond, which is beautiful. We did not take full advantage of the outdoor activities, since it is December. But the inside of the house is cozy and relaxing. Very comfy furniture and a great view from the sleeping space in the loft. The place is clean and well cared for. Tom is an extremely nice guy and we will definitely be going back. It is truly a beautiful area of Illinois and tiny house is perfect if you are looking to wind down and relax. Thanks, Tom!

Restaurant’s and bars are closing tonight at end of day for two weeks. Most restaurants are staying open and doing delivery and/ or curbside. We will list these restaurants below and will provide a list at the rentals. 3. In between guests, we will continue to thoroughly sanitize all linens, door handles, remotes, etc. This is currently our practice as is, but will be extra vigilant during this time. 4. Antibacterial hand and dish soap are provided at the rentals. 5. We will suspend our visiting with guests unless you need us to bring you something, or you would like a fire built, etc. We will remain in contact via text/ Airbnb messaging. Our numbers are provided via the app (once you book, you have the option to call us) and if you can’t reach us by phone- shoot a text and we will get back to you as soon as possible. From Airbnb: Reservations made on or before March 14, 2020 for stays and Airbnb Experiences, with a check-in date between March 14, 2020 and April 14, 2020, are covered by the policy and may be cancelled before check-in. Guests who cancel will receive a full refund, and hosts can cancel without charge or impact to their Superhost status. Airbnb will refund all service fees for covered cancellations. The host’s cancellation policy will apply as usual to reservations made after March 14, 2020, and to reservations made on or before March 14, 2020 with check-in dates after April 14, 2020. If a reservation has already begun (the check-in has passed) this extenuating circumstance does not apply. Domestic reservations in mainland China are covered under the existing mainland China extenuating circumstances for COVID-19 statement. Luxe or Luxury Retreats reservations are covered under the Luxe Guest Refund Policy. **NOTE** Recreational Marinuana is legal in Illinois! Check out the guidebook on dispensaries for more info or shoot us a message! We are “420 Friendly” but just ask that when partaking in any manner that may create an odor (smoking) you do it outside or on the screened in porch. Also- The Refuge Cottage is still being updated, and there are a few things that we are still working on- things like new windows, finishing trim, touching up paint, etc., but it is all functioning and cozy, and ready for guests! Updated photos and amenities will be added as soon as it's ready!**Check out or other listing, THE REFUGE BUNGALOW to check out reviews as hosts- you'll find out that you can take our word for it!** The rustic yet modern feel of the Refuge Cottage will instantly set you at ease and make you feel at home. Set toward the end of a small neighborhood in the woods, surrounded by the Crab Orchard Wildlife Refuge, you'll experience the solitude you're looking for on your vacation! Our neighborhood is small, and the neighbors are amazing- we are sort of a small family on our own. If you see Faye outside waving at you, stop and chat- it will make her day, and she has a lot of great information on the history of the neighborhood itself. We just ask that you be respectful of our neighbors by driving slowly each time you go down the lane, keeping loud music/ noises to a minimum after 10, and not littering. With a full kitchen, washer and dryer, and 2 bedrooms, the Cottage is perfect for a quick getaway or a longer stay. "Dorothy's Room" features a queen bed. "Jack's Room" features two twin bed, and the living room has two (comfortable- I promise!) Futons that cold down into full size beds - plenty of room for a group or a getaway with friends! We don’t charge for extra guests, and we have no issue with air mattresses or anything being brought In. Both rooms feature ceiling fans with remotes, closets, and cozy bedding! The living/ dining area gives you the perfect, cozy spot to relax in front of the gas fireplace- just flip a switch for instant ambiance. Pop in a DVD, play a board game, or check out one of the local activity guides to plan your stay. The bathroom includes a full size tub/ shower, lighted vanity, pedestal sink, and of the...ummm.. throne. Towels, toilet paper, and assorted amenities are included for your convenience. The open kitchen is perfect for preparing meals while still enjoying your party. A full sized fridge and oven/ stove, sink, and plenty of cabinet space allow you to cook a gourmet meal or make a quick snack. We provide all the kitchen utensils and pots and pans that you may need! Basics such as flour, sugar, salt and pepper, etc. will be ready for guest use! The kitchen also includes a stackable washer and dryer. Laundry soap and dryer sheets are there if you need to was a load of clothes, or just a few items. The screened in porch is the perfect place to hang out without having to worry about mosquitos or rain. Relax, enjoy your meal, or just sit and enjoy the sounds of nature. The "Creek Deck" as we call it, overlooks a small creek and is our favorite spot! It overlooks a small creek and provides great background noise after a rain! An outdoor table with seating for 4 and umbrella make it a great spot to spend time. Relax in the hammock nearby, or make a campfire and roast hot dogs or marshmallows. Across the road, you can check out Devils Kitchen Lake. There is a kayak drop in (ask us about our kayak/ canoe rentals), paved roads that are perfect for a walk or bike riding, and a great spot next to lake for a picnic. Plus, you may get to see the geese that call the lake home holding traffic up. Down the road, you can check out Little Grassy Lake. There's a spot that's perfect for pictures, a secret swimming spot, and a marina where you can rent pontoon boats for the day! Check out our guidebooks for more local attractions!
Our neighborhood is small, and the neighbors are amazing- we are sort of a small family on our own. You may notice Steve and Elaina's pretty natural landscaping, or Steve's passion project- the hand built workshop he has been working on in his retirement. Or you may notice Faye's yard decorations, or see her and her husband Dan sitting on their patio, watching the neighborhood comings and goings. If you do see Faye outside, pause to say hello. It will make her day, and she will be happy to fill you in on the history of the neighborhood. They live in the blue house with the carport, and do a better job of watching things than any security system! We just ask that you be respectful of our neighbors by driving slowly each time you go down the lane, keeping loud music/ noises to a minimum after 10, and not littering.
  • We had a very nice time staying here. The location felt safe and check in was super easy. It’s a very peaceful area with hiking trails just down the road. The board games and DVD selection were a nice touch and gave us things to do in our down time. Sarah and Spencer were very communicative and helpful. A couple of things for folks to consider if they choose to stay here: 1. we brought many of our own items to cook with and there wasn’t much available in the cabin. However, our hosts graciously supplied us with an item we needed and it was much appreciated! 2. As advertised it is a work in progress. It was definitely clean I.e. My sheets smelled good, the tub was very clean, etc. The decor is charming and eclectic. And the bed was comfortable. With that said, some aspects of the cabin were reflective of the work still being done which the host did inform me of prior to our arrival.

  • Due to the Coronavirus Sarah was the best at disinfecting everything prior to us arriving at the cottage. The place is great if you want to get away from the city and explore the forest, wineries, breweries, hiking trails, parks, water sports, restaurants ect. Unfortunately due to the Coronavirus we weren’t able to enjoy a lot of these things. But their backyard is full of many forest adventures and from inside the cabin you can hear all kinds of birds, frogs, and coyotes that never went near us. It is the best place to get away from the city and comfortably enjoy nature. Sarah provided all the essential needs even through this epidemic. She was very helpful with food delivery suggestions and the nearby market have groceries for cheap! Inside of the cottage is perfect to hang out in. The fire place inside the cottage is very relaxing and there is a outside smoke place with a screen that we totally took advantage of. Thank you Sarah it was really nice to meet y’all! :)

  • A perfect, quiet getaway. Perfectly secluded. Sarah and her family were wonderful and helpful while we visited, and even after our trip was over. Felt like a home away from home. Hope to make a return trip.

  • Very comfortable, cozy, quiet place. Has all the amenities of home and the owners are wonderful .

  • If your looking for a Four Season this isn’t your place. If you’re looking for a cute, cozy and inviting cottage in a quiet family area this is your place. The host is very attentive if anything is needed. There are beautiful parks, wineries and restaurants Very close but not close enough to hear or see from the cottage.

    Tara2020-02-03T00:00:00Z
  • Very quiet spot out by Devils Kitchen. Perfect for my, husband, and 4 year old lab. Sarah was very attentive, had several local suggestions, and offered free firewood . Would definitely stay again!

  • This place is a dream. Everything was sparkly clean, and the room was absolutely amazing! The weather wasn’t the greatest, but now it gives my fiancé and I a reason to go back so we can get the full outdoor experience with their lake and paddleboat. With COVID-19 still traveling around, Victoria and John specifically went out and bought a microwave and mini fridge for us to use during our stay so we could maintain our distance. They were so nice and their dogs are so well behaved! I couldn’t recommend this place more!!! I can’t wait to go back :)

    Ashley2020-04-05T00:00:00Z
  • This place is perfect for me. I also really appreciate that they offer discounts for nurses (don’t worry, they take precautions in cleaning). I have stayed here a lot of times. Everything is beautiful and comfortable and super private. Couldn’t ask for more!

    Bethany2020-03-07T00:00:00Z
  • Victoria and John consistently go above and beyond to make me feel at home and taken care of. The place is so beautiful and I love staying here. The rooms are just perfect. There are multiple rooms that rent, but it always feels very private as each room has everything you need, including a bathroom, beautiful views, and temperature control. I don’t think I can stay anywhere else around here anymore. I’m too spoiled by this place!

NOT THE FOUR SEASONS but COZY comfy home, soft CLEAN sheets, fluffy pillows, designer quilt. Love to meet guests. The house is is small as is bath but QUIET, CLEAN and SAFE neighborhood watch area. Mayor of Carbondale lives a few houses down. NON-party home. Pet and children friendly. Another Airbnb room available . Kitchen/living room. Snacks or Continental Breakfast. Crab Orchard , the Shawnee National Forest, Giant City State Park, Pomona Natural Bridge, Garden of the Gods, and wine trails.
CLEAN CLEAN. but older quaint rental home. Shabby .. but sort of chic! FULL sized bed. Extra sanitizer/cleaning these days Shared kitchen, nice bright living room. Shared bath seems to be no issue until recently when an overweight guest had issues.. . since I'm a clean-a-holic and people have been considerate/ communicating cleaning. .I try to be super responsive so please let me know your needs.. (like Cold AC or lots of refrig room) After four years of hosting I have found the majority of Guests are good about cleaning up after themselves so the shared bath iolder but very clean... - I have two bedrooms I use for Airbnb, usually only one at at time is rented normally BUT be prepared sometimes to either have the whole house to yourself .OR share with another nice guest. I TRY discuss reservations with you before hand but sometimes it gets away with me so ask details or read the house rules. . When I'm not there I will set up a co-host. and you may wind up alone in the entire house once in awhile at no extra charges.. One bedroom is slightly larger with a desk (sleighed room) and this one without a desk is smaller with a lower bed is less $ but you still get use of kitchen and living room etc. IF I AM THERE WHICH IS RARE I have one pet on premises-- a non-shedding , happy , non barking English cocker spaniel named Hudson. He loves guests. He will jump up at first but he knows "NO!" and "sit!" but he stops jumping after two minutes .. he is 11.. I travel extensively so may not be there when you are staying at house but respond promptly to calls and texts.. Also Hudson, the cocker spaniel will not be there when I'm not there. The house is plain rented ranch but I've tried to make it cozy . The room has 300 count Ralph Lauren sheets/ or upgraded mixture... and designer quilt. Towels, nice shampoo, soaps are provided. I have organic coffee in the freezer or out on the counter.. .. and tea and happy to have share IF I AM COOKING.. what ever i'm making, pancakes to oatmeal.. or have you can make your own breakfast ..or your own meal.....have some fruit from the frig etc. I tried to keep it as clean as possible and have a housekeeper helping out when Im not there but sometimes quick turn around schedules make it difficult so you may be asked to put new sheets on bed if I'm not there.. and when you leave to put sheets in hamper . Cleaning supplies and bleach are under the kitchen and bathroom sink. The only negative is a well-appointed but smaller sized bathroom is the 1950's pink enamel tub in the shared bath has some age related color issues I can't remove the old discoloration but again keep bleach and cleaning supplies at hand.. Bath temp is hot and curtains etc are kept very hygienic --- it's just a 'vintage' tub. Lastly please feel free to adjust the temperatures (knobs at the end of in the hall.) FULL SIZED MATTRESS
EXTREMELY QUIET AND SAFE. Walking distance to campus lake and 3 mile nature path..Well-kept modest houses near University for faculty and grad students only. Phone numbers of the neighbors are posted on the refrig. We are within walking distance to Campus lake which is a nice 3 miles bike or running path and one block from Law School and near the Mass Communication building. Professional/ Retirees quiet area in the area.
  • We had such a nice time staying at Luci’s. She is so gracious and hospitable— she had tea with us one evening after a long day of hiking. Great location & the room was as welcoming as Luci.

    Jennifer2020-03-01T00:00:00Z
  • A very cute "shabby chic" old bungalow. We only needed a bed for the night so didn't even need to avail ourselves of the kitchen, coffee, etc. Loved Hudson, her very sweet dog. Luci was very friendly and easy to communicate with. Lots of detailed housekeeping info geared to travelers who haven't a clue how to be a guest but she was much more relaxed than her notes would leave you to believe (but we made sure to follow directions). Only 4 minutes from our son's apt so we will be back!

Eva's Roost is a rustic zen-style cottage on the property of Center For Lost Arts in Cobden. Nestled in the hillside the roost gives a sense of oneness with nature. No curtains allow a complete experience of nature: forest, pond, stars, moonrise, sunrise, birds & animals. Paul is the architect of everything you see. Bonnie offers Mindful Living sessions & facilitates individual/group retreats at the main house. Together they offer Eva's Roost for you to enjoy - a cozy cabin all your own.
Enjoy your own place while having access to gardens, trails, & pond. We offer a discount for stays over three nights so guests can completely unwind, unplug and reconnect with themselves, their companion or with nature. Whatever's needed! The peaceful, natural setting is perfect for writers, artists, musicians and anyone needing some time out from their regular routine. The cottage is simple with a woodstove, bathroom with shower, sitting area and double bed. A small kitchen(toaster oven, hotplate, kettle, coffeemaker, dishes & basic cooking supplies) doubles as a storm shelter if ever needed. Electric heat is available for winter and air conditioner for summer. The pond room fan is set to push warm air down in winter and draw cool air up in summer. You'll find it's remote on the wall. During the coldest part of winter (December-February) the heaters alone are usually not enough to keep the cabin toasty so the woodstove is a must. Guests are welcome to use the kitchen at the main house if they are wanting to use a large oven or gas stove. If you need assistance in learning to start and maintain a fire, Paul or Bonnie can show you how. Eventually their will be a screened in porch to sit out in the evenings by the pond. Currently, there is an outdoor fire pit with adirondack chairs facing the pond. Those interested in architecture, creative spaces & naturally wild settings will especially love Center For Lost Arts and Eva's Roost or Tiny House of Paul(our other retreat space). We have a young farmer/producer growing food in two large gardens on our property. He is also propagating trees and other ventures. His name is Stuart and he arrived just before the pandemic. You are welcome to ask him questions about his natural farming practices and buy seasonal produce directly from him. Normally guests are welcome to help in the gardens or participate in yoga, meditation, retreats or other seasonal activities such as tapping maple trees, drying herbs, infusing oils, laying stone and more. During the pandemic, we are more limited on these offerings, but we trust you will enjoy what is here.
Southernmost Illinois is a unique part of the State. Rock formations abound, the Shawnee National forest surrounds us and the rolling hills, small farms, wineries, orchards and quirky & quaint towns add to the charm and interest of the area. We are a few minutes from Cobden, ten minutes from either Alto Pass(Bald Knob), Anna or the now infamous town of Makanda. Carbonale is twenty minutes and Murphysboro about 30 minutes. Giant City Park is fifteen minutes one way and Trail of Tears is about the same distance the other. Many overlooks, trails, rock climbing areas plus not far to go kayaking or canoeing. Art and music everywhere whether it be at the wineries, The Old Feed Store, local galleries and other venues. We own Packrats Paradise Antique Mall which also sells local and handcrafted items. Cobden has some very good restaurants we're happy to recommend. Others in nearby towns we can suggest as well. Let us know your interests and we can make suggestions or recommendations. There is a binder at the roost with lots of information.
  • This is my 2nd time here--it gets more and more lovely each time. New bed is great!

    Paige2020-03-12T00:00:00Z
  • Bonnie and Paul were wonderful hosts! The space was beautiful and perfect, and the living room was bigger than it looks in the pictures, giving us a wonderful place to read and talk. The grounds are beautiful and the location is perfectly in range of wineries and hiking sites. Would definitely recommend to a friend!

    Rebecca2020-03-08T00:00:00Z
  • The cabin was a perfect retreat for our small family. We had everything we needed to be cozy and comfortable while we unplugged and enjoyed a few days taking in the natural beauty around us. Out our windows we were able to observe lots of birds and other creatures. It was magical! Bonnie and Paul were attentive and helped us whenever needed and otherwise we were left to enjoy ourselves.

    Melissa2020-02-23T00:00:00Z
  • Very clean and full of anything you may need for a comfortable, fulfilling stay!

    Pilar2020-02-05T00:00:00Z
  • This cabin is such a special retreat! It's cozy, thoughtfully designed, and just perfect for anyone seeking to get away from it all for a few days. Bonnie and Paul are generous, warm hosts--there when you need them, but also respectful of your need for privacy/solitude. Perfect for a couple or a single person.

    Paige2020-01-11T00:00:00Z
  • This was our 2nd time staying at Eva’s Roost and it was just as magical as the first time.

    Meridith2019-12-22T00:00:00Z
  • The cabin is absolutely beautiful and the hosts are very kind. It is a great spot to be in nature and the wood stove adds a cozy, warm feel to the experience. I would definitely come back if possible :).

    Pamela2019-12-16T00:00:00Z
  • This space is AMAZING! Bonnie is so welcoming and just knocked our socks off with her kindness and her caring attitude. We were welcomed by a text and from there the wonderful weekend away began! She has this place decorated and situated so well. Paul is a humble soul and will charm you with his exquisite craftsmanship and beautiful architecture. This cabin in the woods has So much thought and heart poured into it! Highly recommended!! We will be returning, as soon as it opens up again!!

The bedroom is simply furnished with space in closets & drawers. There is one twin daybed with another twin bed that rolls out from underneath should you need it. I also have a twin and a full-sized air mattress that can be placed on the floor within the room. You'll have your own bathroom & towels (unless additional guests are in the house), with tiny toiletries should you need them. You would share the common areas (living room, kitchen, yard, & laundry area) with me and a tenant.
I prefer guests either remove their shoes in the sunporch before entering the main house portion or at least wipe them off really well on the mats if you're in a hurry. I have 3 cats - one of which is super-friendly. I regularly clean the floors and other surfaces where the cats frequent. They only rarely ever enter the guest room; the door can be completely closed if you wish to keep the cats out. I have a hepafilter that I will run if I know in advance you are allergic to cats. It usually helps. However, if you are severely allergic, you may wish to find another place to stay. When the weather is nice (like in spring and/or fall), I like to open the windows to allow fresh air to circulate. If you have allergies associated with outside elements, please let me know in advance so I can keep the windows closed during your stay.
Carbondale is a nice little university town. Therefore, most things are within walking or biking distance (I have an extra bike & even a tandem you could potentially use). My bike is my most common form of transportation, depending on distance, time, and weather. Being a university town also means there is a wide variety of locally owned shops & restaurants as well as entertainment acts & venues. Southern Illinois is renowned for its extensive orchards, wineries, and nearby outdoor recreation areas (such as Green Earth sites, Giant City State Park, Touch of Nature Environmental Center, Shawnee National Forest, Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge, Panther Den Wilderness, River-to-River Trail, Shawnee Hills Canopy Tours, etc.).

The very large (13’ x 23’) cabin like room with chimney is in a conveniently located, vintage cabin type of house from the 1920’s, surrounded by nature. It is a quiet environment in a house shared by mature tenants.

My dog Sheila and I had a great nights sleep! I even rebooked to stay here on my way back from Nebraska! Will be back for trips to come.

The Refuge Bungalow is located at the very end of a small neighborhood of 8 houses. All of our neighbors are awesome! PLEASE BE RESPECTFUL OF THE NEIGHBORS BY DRIVING SLOWLY UP AND DOWN THE LANE, KEEPING NOISE TO A MINIMUM AFTER 10 PM, AND NOT LITTERING!
  • This little cabin is really great! Its secluded and very restful. This was our second visit and we hope to return soon.

  • Don’t be fooled by the pictures, this place is perfect for a mini getaway. We used it for a bachelorette weekend at the wine trails and my only regret was not having more time in the cabin. Great location, very clean and close to all wineries and restaurants. Will stay again

  • Great location, easy to find, peaceful

    Kristin2020-02-23T00:00:00Z
  • The cabin is amazing. Sarah has quite the gem here. We loved the secluded location. She was very friendly and helpful with our stay, addressing any concerns we had immediately and making sure everything was exactly as well expected. My daughter and I plan on going back again for sure!!!

    Angela2019-11-26T00:00:00Z
  • This place was awesome! The host were very nice and welcoming. They had great communication and fulfilled all our needs. The hot tub and bon fire was nice and the place was clean. The only bad thing about this place is you won’t have any service and there’s no WiFi.

    Brie2019-11-02T00:00:00Z
  • The location was perfect for visiting Giant City park as well as some great wineries, yet still close enough to Carbondale for a few nice meals. A dip in the hottub was excellent on a chilly fall evening.

    Michael2019-11-01T00:00:00Z
  • The hosts are fantastic, helpful, and reply quickly! The bungalow is a fantastic hidden gem that is obviously loved by the people who own it. Would absolutely return!

    Julie2019-10-27T00:00:00Z
  • The Refuge Bungalow is a great place to relax and be surrounded by the natural beauty of the land. We brought a few prepared meals that were easily heated on the hot plate. It was great to spend hours sitting/dancing near a campfire. Soaking in the hot tub felt great after a day of hiking around Little Grand Canyon. Sipping wine from local wineries out on the deck captured a little bit of our time! The inside of the cabin was very clean and always smelled good when we would arrive back after a day of exploring. The water temperature and pressure are good in the kitchen and bathroom. There are basic kitchen amenities offered like pots, pans, dishes, salt, pepper, foil, oil, etc.. We really enjoyed the indoor fireplace and the ambiance it provided while we leisurely read or watched a movie (lots to choose from at the cabin or bring your own DVDs). The linens were clean and the bed was comfy. We loved our stay at the Refuge Bungalow!
