Places to stay in Balblair
Return from woodland and coastal walks to an 1850s cottage which still retains many original features, including decorative fireplaces. Daily fresh eggs from the farm in an interior of delicate pastel and floral notes, plus Caledonian artefacts.
As the name suggests this cottage was previously used as dairy on the family farm in years gone by. The house was built in the 1850's, the first house on the farm as it is now. The cottage was also known as Grieves House and was home to the Manager of Dalmore Distillery years and years ago.
Dalmore Farm is in a quiet location on the edge of Alness, a busy town which in 2018 won the title of Best High Street in Scotland. Set on the shore of the Cromarty Firth, this makes an ideal base for exploring Easter Ross and the Northern Highlands.
  • We had such a wonderful stay at Carolyn’s place. It was so cozy and comfortable and every one in our party thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The house had everything you could want including fresh eggs, milk and bread for breakfast. I highly recommend Carolyn’s place to anyone. She is a gracious host.

  • Great host & great accommodation - We have stayed at Carolyn's place a few times now while working in the area. Recommend to others.

    Brogan2020-02-28T00:00:00Z
  • Carolyn's place is indeed the best Airbnb house I stayed so far ! I fell in love with every corner of the house which has been decorated so beautifully with pastel colors I love. The farmhouse is so beautiful and luxurious. The host is so kind to provide us with a basket full of fresh fruits, the fridge full of food- yogurt, juices, milk, carrot cakes, bread, a basket full of eggs!.. oh my god so nice. 6 out of 5 stars for Carolyn and her place!

    Wardah2020-02-08T00:00:00Z
  • Carolyn’s cottage was absolutely perfect! There is not a single thing I could fault. It was super clean, the beds were comfortable and the shower was great. There was lots of space and lots of extra touches that just made everything perfect. Carolyn met us at the cottage to explain everything and she was lovely. We had fresh milk, bread, fruit and even a wee cake on our arrival. The fresh eggs from the chickens that are all around the cottage were the best I’ve tasted. The board games in the sitting room were perfect for that quiet family night in. It really was just in all the little details. Perfect stay!!

  • Great accommodation and host - recommend!

    Brogan2020-01-24T00:00:00Z
  • Carolyn was an excellent host in every way - communication was great, easy check in, the place was decorated beautifully and spotlessly clean and really went out of her way to make sure it was a great stay for the guys. It was so good I have booked it again. Thanks Carolyn!

  • Fantastic cottage, can’t fault anything. Lovely welcome gifts as well as everything you need for your stay. Feels like home away from home. Couldn’t recommend it more!

  • It was such an amazing stay that we were a bit sad on the day of our departure. The place was sparkling clean when we arrived and gave such a homey feel. All the facilities ran well including our personal favorite, the amazing fireplace.

  • Exceptional house in beautifully renovated courtyard. The decor and finishes are first class and all of the upgrades are sympathetically executed. Lovely!

    David2019-09-08T00:00:00Z
  • We loved our four night stay at Red Gates and wished we had stayed longer! It is beautifully done; from the thoughtful restoration, to the lovely furnishings. We loved all the space and the quiet location. It was fantastic to have separate washer & dryer as opposed to the two-in-one units that are so prevalent. Highly recommended & one of our favorite Airbnb’s! Thank you Rebecca!

    Lynn2019-08-26T00:00:00Z
  • Red Gates is a warm, inviting newly renovated carriage house nestled in the gorgeous farmlands of Balblair. • We've recently returned from a week's stay in this cottage. Cottage was clean and tidy on arrival and in a great location for us ~ easy to get to other places, good wildlife on the doorstep etc. There was some road noise especially with farm vehicles but nothing that detracted from our break and easy to pull our car in off the road so no concerns there. we found the cottage comfy with plenty of space and lots of thoughtful touches to make for a relaxing stay. We would stay again.

    Claire2019-09-21T00:00:00Z

But also a convenient base for exploring the beauty and diversity of the Black Isle and the Highlands.

The "Log Cabin" is on a smallholding (10 miles from A9) on the picturesque Black Isle with open space all around you, and extensive views out over the Cromarty Firth and the small mountains to the north. Visit the lovely places nearby on the Black Isle or travel further afield (Loch Ness 40 mins). Great for couples and individuals, for a short stop-over or a good self-contained secluded base for a longer, peaceful stay. Comfortable, well equipped, cosy with log burner. Very good internet.
With a sitting room, eating area and kitchen all with great views you have more than just a bedroom to enjoy and you have lovely quiet private accommodation to stay in. There is also an outside decking area, plenty of car parking and adjacent fields and forestry to walk in if you want to be outside after your journey. You can safely leave your things 'at home' knowing you have the Log Cabin to yourself when you go out travelling for the day, go for a meal on the Black Isle or go to the theatre or a concert in Inverness in the evening. Or you can stay in with the log burner lit and enjoy a cosy day or evening relaxing. There are cows and calves, two donkeys, and very free range hens on the smallholding that you can watch, feed or just appreciate.
The Black Isle is a wonderful place to visit. Visit Cromarty, formerly a fishing village with its lighthouse, harbour and the house museum of Hugh Miller who was a pioneer geologist, walk by the sea and if energetic, climb the South Sutor (hill at entrance to the Cromarty Firth), walk along the beach at Rosemarkie or through the trees of the Faerie Glen and then enjoy Groam Museum, see Fortrose with its cathedral ruins, fine views and look out for dolphins, and wander through Avoch with its tiny fishing cottages and lanes. All these have good places to eat, such as the Anderson in Fortrose, the Plough Inn in Rosemarkie, Sutor Creek and Royal Hotel in Cromarty. Culbokie also has a good restaurant and pub (the Culbokie Inn) which is only a couple of miles from the A9 and 6 miles from the Log Cabin, or try the Allangrange Hotel in Munlochy perhaps together with a visit to the Black Ilse Brewery.
  • The log cabin is very cozy and the view from there is amazing. You can explore the black isle from there very well or just stay and enjoy the feeling of beeing home. Sally Ann and Ruslan are very friendly and courteous, the cabin is tidy and the kitchen has everything you need. I can highly recommend this host!

    Martin2018-09-19T00:00:00Z
  • Cosy cabin, especially with the wood oven. Sally Anns recommendations for stops on our drive to the cabin were great. Arriving we had everything we needed. Ruslan was very friendly.

  • The comfiest cabin I have seen so far, generous provision of bagels, eggs and more. Beautiful view. Not as dramatic as on Skye, but far more relaxing.

    Frank2018-09-10T00:00:00Z
  • The log cabin is very cosy with the fireplace. We enjoyed our stay there, the surroundings is very quiet, really good to be close to the nature, animals. Sally Ann gave great advice regarding what to see and where to eat as well - great host. Recommending this place, hope to be back in the future!

  • The cabin has amazing views of Cromarty Firth. It is very peacful with friendly donkeys, cows and chickens as neighbours. The cabin is comfortable and quiet with everything you need. The Black Isle is very pretty for exploring with lots to do in the wider area if needed. Sally Ann is a caring and thoughtful hostess and we especially enjoyed the fresh eggs for breakfast.

  • Quirky, quiet, comfy and cosy.

    Peter2018-08-20T00:00:00Z
  • Cozy and very clean cabin with fantastic views. It is the perfect place to unwind and relax by the fireplace. Great location if you want to drive through the most beautiful spots of the Highlands. Sally is an excellent hostess, very sweet and took the time to explain us the places to visit and eat around the area. Cafe Eighty2 in Drumnadrochit is highly recommended. Cozy and very clean cabin with wonderful views. It is a perfect place to unwind and relax by the silence of the site or to use it as a base to know the Highlands. Sally is an excellent hostess and helps you get to know the surroundings and the nearby places to visit and eat. We loved the Cafe Eighty2 in Drumnadrochit.

  • We just loved the log cabin. The cabin has everything you need and our daughter Carla loved to stay outside, look at the animals, play with the stones etc. The light at the Black Isle is just amazing. It is the perfect place to relax and enjoy yourselves. Highly recommended! Miriam

My place is close to Cromarty,we are in the heart of the Black Isle, famous for so many places, famous people, dolphins, and a great wildlife.Cathedrals, beaches, cliffs and caves. The list is endless. You’ll love my place because it is unique, quite ,peaceful and so relaxing, our beds are very comfortable, the rooms cosy, and have ensuite facilities,a good hospitality tray and outstanding views over the Udale bay (Yew bay, Norse). My place is good for couples, solo adventurers, and business travellers.
We have one double room ensuite at £75.00 per room per night, includes full Scottish breakfast.
We are very peaceful here and you will surprised of just how much actually is going on.The start of NC500 usually starts here,a very good starting point.Learnie bike trials just along the lanes from us. With a compact set of trials for all abilities, great location, hire a bike and give a try.
  • The house is very clean and has a separate bathroom with breakfast. The two lakes are nearby and the scenery is beautiful. The female landlord is particularly friendly, enthusiastic and very nice. It also helps us to develop a travel plan to help us check the address of the next stop. Staying here is very comfortable and highly recommended. The only thing to consider is that there is no public transportation near here and it is only suitable for self-driving tour. The room is clean and equipped with all necessities, With nice breakfast .The house is near 2 lakes and farms, the scenery is beautiful. Barbara is a warm-hearted lady, she helped us with our travel plan, and even checked up the hotel For our next stop. I really enjoyed the night at this place, and strongly recommend it.

  • Barbara’s B &B was the best I’ve ever stayed in. It was the most gorgeous place, Immaculately clean and tidy. Barbara was incredibly gracious and hospitable. She is brilliant. Breakfast is divine. The location is off track but that just adds to the perfection. I can’t recommend this place enough. I would love to come back one day, and indulge in Barbara’s extensive knowledge of Scotland. Thanks again Barbara.

A delightful garden house right in the middle of Alness. A perfect starting point for your tour of the wonderful Highlands of Scotland and all they have to offer. Be it golf, distilleries, walking, cycling or the now world renown NC500. Of course you may well just want to kick back with a large glass of the amber nectar in hand in comfortable surroundings and have a total relax.
The garden house consists of a large sitting room cum kitchen fully equipped with a gas hob, electric oven, microwave oven, kettle, fridge and Nespresso coffee machine. The fridge will be stocked with enough to keep you going for you first breakfast. Bacon, eggs, sausages, tomatoes black pudding and mushrooms. Tea bags and 10 nespresso pods are also included. The sitting area consists of a comfortable sofa and large reclining armchair, coffee table packed with games and puzzles. On a sutherland table we have a small but varied selection of books. The books work on a rota system, you're of course welcome to take the one you are reading away with you, all we ask is that you leave one behind for the next person. You then have a large double bedroom. And a shower room with a vast shower.
From fabulous views of the Fyrish monument, the Cromarty firth. Dalmore distillery being a short walk away and plenty walking or cycling in the local area. Only 20 miles from Inverness. 2 excellent golf clubs, one within walking distance the other a short drive away in Invergordon. You are welcome to borrow Ali's golf clubs and electric trolley. Ali also has an elderly but very serviceable bicycle you are also welcome to borrow.
  • Lovely place, rustic and comfortable. Definitely recommend it.

  • Definitely deserves to be a superhost. Garden house was warm, comfy and stocked with everything you could possibly need. Nothing was too much bother and breakfast was delicious. We will definitely return to explore more of the area.

    Katrina2019-10-20T00:00:00Z
  • The guest house was a nice base for our Highlands exploration. Ali provided us with all of the ingredients to prepare a full Scottish breakfast, which we thoroughly enjoyed. Although not applicable to our stay, they also provided a high chair and play pen if you're traveling with little ones. The kitchen has everything you need for cooking full meals, there was a nice selection of movies, books and games for relaxing, and the bed was very comfortable. The small town of Alness has some yummy take away too, all of which are a very short walk away.

    Heidi2019-10-15T00:00:00Z
  • Lovely little log cabin- bigger than expected! The breakfast in the fridge was a lovely touch as well.

  • A fantastic find, located conveniently close to Inverness and the Airport. The Garden House is extremely comfortable, very spacious, modern, clean and stylish. I could not have hoped for a more accomodating home from home, or more friendly interesting hosts. Thank you Ali and David

  • Ali’s apartment was beautiful and very tastefully decorated with a well equipped kitchen. The bed was very comfy and the bathroom was very attractively designed with a powerful shower. We loved the wooden interior of the apartment and enjoyed relaxing with the TV and games that were provided. Ali was very hospitable and ready to help in person whenever needed. This apartment comes highly recommended!

  • This was the perfect bolt hole for us and was exactly what we expected from the accurate description and photographs. Lots of food in the fridge gave us a great choice for cooking our breakfast. We felt private and safe and off-street parking is a definite bonus. Not only was there everything we needed, but there were also some very nice touches which showed that Ali definitely cares about your comfort. This is a great base for exploring the beautiful area and they were also extremely friendly and welcoming. Highly recommended!

  • We spent three nights in this lovely cottage during a tour in the north of Scotland. The place is immersed in tranquility, the only source of “noise” you will hear will be the birds and the sheep. The owners are a very nice couple, kind and courteous. We were greeted as if we were old friends, better than that we could not ask. The room was clean, the bed very comfortable. Breakfast, in addition to the contagious sympathy of Susan and Sean, is perhaps the highlight of the experience: rich, varied and with absolutely incredible Susan jams. If you want to go out for dinner in the evening, ask Sean, he will advise you as best as he did with us. If we’ll go back to the north of Scotland, we will definitely come back to Susan and Sean!

  • I stayed at Mossfield croft on my return journey down south having completed the NC500 coastal route and am very glad I did so. Susan and Sean were fabulous and kind hosts. Their beautiful home sits surrounded by meadows and a mini loch. • A cosy little pod. Paul gave us a wonderful welcome and recommended places to eat. The breakfast was great and the pygmy goats was so cute! Its not a big space but all you need.

    Lotta2019-08-20T00:00:00Z
  • This is the perfect wee place for a night(s) away for a couple of people! Paul and Claire are very attentive hosts and were on hand for any questions or requests. The whole ground is thoughtfully laid out and designed and the pod itself was exceptionally clean and had all the necessary amenities. The bed was extremely comfy and spacious with lovely cotton sheets (I would recommend setting out the bed last thing at night as there's limited space to move around otherwise). The best thing for us was the BBQ/firepit. You can get coal (£5)/logs (£10) which did us the whole evening with logs spare (you can bring your own if you wish). We would definitely like to visit again and would make use of the continental breakfast service (we had to leave early doors so didn't get a chance to try this). :( Thank you for a 5 star glamping experience! Hannah

  • No welcome from Margaret because we could not communicate wifi or telephone network. The keys were near the apartment which is located in the center of the small town of invergordon. 1 era surprise this is an oil port coming from the highlands it's funny. But finally we found a lot of charm. See something else. Tankers, sailors with fish and chips ... The apartment is very spacious, very clean and very well equipped to take a break of several nights. 30mns from Inverness and 1h from Loch Ness. Brief to recommend

    Christine2017-08-13T00:00:00Z
  • We stayed for two nights while exploring the Highlands, Invergordon is a great location for this. The flat was spotless, clean linen, towels and everything you could need if you wanted to self cater. Margaret was a pleasure to deal with from the first contact and we would have no hesitation in recommending the flat as a comfortable, spacious base. She even left a present for our Daughters Birthday, very thoughtful. All told we had a great time and would happily recommend the accommodation.

It is a big flat which is very close to all the basic amenities, perfect for those who want to explore the world beyond inverness but at the same time it is only half an hour away from inverness. Margaret had been an excellent host who was in touch with us even before our arrival and guided us with the things to do around which we found very helpful. • Helen has a wonderful house in the Scottish countryside yet not too far from the town. The house is really beautiful and aesthetically done up. She hs a well equipped kitchen with all cooking facilities. Her 5 cute dogs are awesome company. Helen took us along for a nice evening walk along with the 5 four legged friends. We had a brilliant short stay at her place and wish we had more time at hand.

  • We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would recommend it to anyone visiting the area. Helen was a great host and booked dinner reservations for us at IV10, a wonderful restaurant nearby. Our dog was made to feel very welcome and enjoyed meeting her dog, Gill. She's such a sweetie. We hope to be back in the future.

  • Helen had left us the keys and a nice word to get in because she was out. We were greeted by 2 super cute little dogs. We could use the kitchen and serve us for breakfast (fresh eggs from the henhouse, bacon, cereals, hot and cold drinks, toast, homemade jam ...). The bathroom and bedroom were spacious and comfortable. Easy to find with the explanations I had spotted before on Google maps with the street view and I asked confirmation to Helen. We were able to meet her in the morning. Home very nice and warm.

Taffs Barn is a holiday cottage that was converted 5 years ago from an old barn, it is very light and airy and set in the peace and tranquillity of the Scottish countryside. We are just North of Inverness on the Blackisle, a good base for seeing the Highlands.
We have 2 conversions both sleeping 4 people. Taffs Barn consists of downstairs an entrance porch leading into a hallway off which leads to the kitchen, a downstairs shower room and a bedroom with a king size bed and here there is a locked door that leads to the shared laundry room which has a washing machine and dryer. The upstairs has a comfortable sitting room off which leads a balcony with table and chairs, there is a large bedroom upstairs with another king size bed and an ensuite bathroom which has a large shower, toilet and bath.
There are plenty of beautiful walks around the Blackisle although to reach these a car would be advisable. There is a golf course, horse riding and a mountain biking track close by.
  • Taffs Barn is a lovely barn conversion perfect for a few days peace and quiet. It is clean and comfortable with a nice modern layout and a well equipped kitchen. The location is easy to find but quiet while still a great base for exploring the Black Isle and further afield. The scones were also fantastic! We hope to come back!

  • Lovely property. Great facilities. Extremely clean.

    Shona2019-12-27T00:00:00Z
  • Pat's place was amazing and beyond my expectations. With an old converted barn, you could never tell from the inside. The inside is spacious with rooms that are big and plenty of room to move. If looking for a quiet place outside the city and some quite this is the place for you. I recommend this place to anything visiting the Inverness area and willing to make the extra drive to the attractions in the areas. Through my entire two week trip throughout the United Kingdom, this was the best place I stayed.

    Robert2019-07-24T00:00:00Z
  • A very comfortable and welcoming interior. It feels good in the living room and the beds and bathrooms are perfect. We slept very well and in the morning two deer were in the field in front of us. In short place to recommend.

  • Stayed here in September for a work trip to Invergordon. Located in a quiet street a stones throw away from the Main Street so all shops easily accessible. Great communication with host and quick responses. Would definitely stay again and recommend to others.

  • Very warm welcome, impeccable accommodation, not a sound if not the seagulls. To recommend

  • Located a very convenient stone's throw from Invergordon High Street, this home manages to remain very quiet and private with a good sized garden and patio area to the rear. It is spotlessly clean, comfortable, very well equipped and the shower is very powerful and one of the best I have experienced. Communication was excellent, with quick and helpful replies. I would definitely stay here again.

  • Highly recommend! Great location to explore. Sparklingly clean! We enjoyed the little touches, especially the board games! Thanks so much!

  • Really cosy studio flat, amazing decoration with everything needed for a short or long stay. Very quick and clear communication with the owners, loads of suggestions of things to do. The studio was filled with lovely little touches, from the welcome basket to the dog towel. Would highly recommend.

    Alasdair2019-11-14T00:00:00Z
  • The Studio was an excellent base for a long weekend on the Black Isle. The accommodation was warm, welcoming and spotless. The extra touches (including some really handy stuff for the dog) from the hosts were also most welcome.

    Tom2019-11-03T00:00:00Z
  • Fantastic, clean, cozy accommodation in a lovely peaceful location, just a few minutes drive down to the village of Rosemarkie. Lots of things to do nearby and nice places to eat. The studio has lots of lovely finishing touches to make you feel welcome and comes complete with items which I always hate bringing when I come on holiday (loo roll, washing up liquid, soap etc.). The decked area to the front of the studio was a bonus...we were lucky to have four days of sunshine this October and on one occasion, sat out with a glass of wine enjoying the Autumn sun! Couldn't recommend it highly enough.

    Hilary2019-10-19T00:00:00Z
  • If you want to explore the Black Isle and the wider highlands then get this place booked. It is like a homefrom home and a great deal of thought has went into making The Studio a wonderful placeto spend your time. From the moment we arrived Jeyne was on hand to welcomeus and brief us on the area, listen to this lady, all her recommendations were spot on!!! Jayne has really thought of everything when kitting the place out, books, films, board games and the kitchen is brilliantly equipped. The Studio is very tastefully decorated and the little personal touches were noted with a very local theme to them. Communication up to and during our visit was superb and we couldn't have asked for any more. Perfect location, perfect accommodation and a perfect host. 5* We both agreed this would be a destination we would happily return to in a heartbeat.

    Richard2019-10-14T00:00:00Z
  • Jenye’s studio is absolutely stunning and we felt very special with all the little extras thrown in. We loved the Black Isle

    Annette2019-10-08T00:00:00Z
  • Jenye and her family were absolutely amazing going far above and beyond what I expect of hosts. She came out to meet us when we arrived and gave us a tour of the little cottage we were staying in and gave us recommendations of the area. The cottage was very clean and stylish with many little touches to show that she cared. The cupboard was stocked with tea and coffee, there was a gift basket full of snacks on the table, and fresh milk in the fridge. The apartment itself had many small decorative touches to feel like a home. Probably one of the best Airbnb's i have ever stayed in. It was absolutely amazing.

  • Some places are just poised make a memory. We arrived on a blustery night after being unable to find a place nearer to Inverness. One hour later we had asked to extend our stay. With the Scottish version of Le Mistral thundering across the fields, we huddled in the warm, carpeted bedrooms among the fresh flowers and pristinely clean linen. After a long day of touring the muted color palate, spacious hall, thoughtful lighting and the hedgehog-patterned shade on the bedroom (c’mon, that was ADORABLE), THANKS was lovely. To the bronze lamp with the rabbits, so special. To our hostess Claire (equally as energetic as the REAL bunnies and fam animals in the backyard) you made us smile. Thanks for the full kitchen, where we spent time as a family cooking together and felt so welcomed. We are sorry we couldn’t stay longer.

  • We had an amazing stay the pod was ace, exceptionally clean , a BBQ outside that we was able to get coal for from hosts, a delivery of hot croissants in the morning, our kids loved the ducks and goats and being able to go in beside them and feed them, Paul and Claire were excellent hosts would highly recommend and definitely be back.

  • Excellent location for visiting the Highlands just off the A9 and views across the cromarty firth and souters. The pods are set up really well, and was perfect for our family of four and dog. We had our own space outside the pod to hang out as well as there being a brilliant communal BBQ/fire pit area. Kids loved playing with the ducks, hens and goats as well as the big wooden boat which provided plenty of fun on the swings. The pod was beautifully decorated and spotlessly clean. We had a very warm welcome from Paul, we will definitely be back.
