Geodome at the Lavender Hideaway

TomRating, 5 stars1 month ago
Our stay at the lavender farm dome was an absolute highlight for our time in NZ. Tim made us feel extremely welcome and went above and beyond as a host, even baking fresh sourdough each morning (along with eggs and cherry tomatoes!) Our 2 year old adored the farm animals, and we loved the unique and super comfortable feel of the dome and hot tub. Recommend highly to anyone looking for a unique stay, the drive in is also spectacular! Photos don’t capture how amazing this place really is.

Twizel Log Cabin 4km from city centre

AnitaRating, 5 stars1 week ago
Christine’s place is amazingly beautiful. Made of huge wooden logs, which were pretty much hurricane proof. Really large upper master bedroom. Pristine bathroom with heated floors. Lots of ammenities in the kitchen, and cosy and warm when we walked inside, what more could you ask for…well actually we wish it snowed when we were there because I’m sure it would have looked amazing, but that’s not the owners fault 😂 There’s a four square grocery store not too far away and restaurants and many gorgeous lakes. Great location and away from the hustle and bustle of big towns. Highly recommended.

Snowgrass Hut - Above & Beyond

ScottRating, 5 stars1 week ago
The Snowgrass Hut - Above and Beyond, exceeded any expectation that we could have had from the beautiful serene views be it day or night, the thought and care put into the hut itself with the design and layout, and the touches of the home made bread and muesli made it so much more wholesome amd welcoming.

Tussock Fields, Twizel. EPIC mountain views!

Katelyn and TobyRating, 5 stars2 weeks ago
This was a perfect place to stay for a week with our family, young child and dogs. The trampoline and swing outside got a lot of use from our 15month old. Property felt very peaceful as it was away from main roads and other houses. We would definitely recommend it to others and love to stay here again 😊

Marvel at this stunning historic chapel renovation

MadelineRating, 5 stars2 weeks ago
One of my favourite stays I’ve ever had. The pictures can’t even capture just how beautiful this space is. We were stunned by the sheer opulence of it. It’s certainly one of the most unique places you can stay which feels very fitting for a town like Oamaru. Had all of the essentials and more, heat pump worked well, kitchen and bathroom were great, extremely comfortable bed. It was also quite close to town and the blue penguin colony. Would recommend this place 10 times over!

The Rise. Ben Ohau

HollyRating, 5 stars2 weeks ago
Had the most amazing stay! The place was super clean, comfy and had everything you could want/need. Fire was set up ready for our arrival! Really loved the extra touches like the stamps on the toilet rolls & the gorgeous dressing gowns. Super easy communication, very accommodating, send us lots of local recommendations & really easy check in. Well worth the money, probably one of the nicest places we've stayed! Thank you :)

Cosy alpine cabin in the high country

ChrisRating, 5 stars1 week ago
It's not an accommodation. It's a holiday destination. The location (being secluded enough) and the build quality of the house is just perfect. This property is easily in my top 3 favorite Airbnb stays. Communication with Andrew was a breeze and he helped out with alot of suggestions. Just go ahead and book it. You won't regret it.

Your guide to Omarama

All About Omarama

Set in the MacKenzie Basin on the South Island of New Zealand two hours northeast of Queenstown, Omarama is most famous for its sheep and wool. As you enter the small mountain town, you are greeted by the Merino Sheep statue. The town is surrounded by natural wonders, including the dramatic Omarama Clay Cliffs and the Ahuriri River, which flows north into Lake Benmore, one of the largest artificial lakes in New Zealand and a popular spot for boating, swimming, and fishing. Also popular is hiking the patchwork of rolling hills that stretch into the distance of this rural community. As you look to the sky, don’t be surprised if you see winged humans in flight — the region is known for its excellent hang-gliding conditions.

The best time to stay in a vacation rental in Omarama

As Omarama is in the southern hemisphere, the summer months are between January and March. This is the warmest time of the year and when most visitors come to the area. Summer is the most comfortable season for enjoying water sports, fishing in the nearby lakes, and hiking the local trails. The coldest time of the year is in the winter, from June to August, where temperatures drop and it’s possible to see snow. This is prime ski season in New Zealand, with ski resorts dotted in the mountain ranges throughout South Island. In the mid-winter, Omarama holds a stargazing party, making the most of the clear skies and low levels of light pollution.

Top things to do in Omarama

Omarama Clay Cliffs

Just six miles from the township, the Omarama Clay Cliffs are an extraordinary natural wonder. Created by glacial flows more than one million years ago and made from silt and gravel, these sandy-colored cliffs have pinnacles that rise to nearly 100 feet high with narrow ravines between them that you can walk through.

Ahuriri Valley Conservation Park

This 120,000-acres conservation park, about 20 minutes south of Omarama, is home to mountains, rivers, and forests. There are several trails for hiking and mountain biking, some of which pass through canyons and wetlands. At the Quailburne Bush and Historic Site inside the park, you’ll find a woolshed and concrete homestead dating back to the 1860s. The Ahuriri River Gorge is a great place to go kayaking or fishing for brown and rainbow trout.

Cycling

A 186-mile cycling trail starts at Aoraki Mountain, passing through Omarama on its way to Oamaru where it meets the ocean. Travel north on the trail to the turquoise waters of Lake Pukaki or to admire the view of the Mackenzie Basin from the trail’s highest point. Alternatively, head south from Omarama and wind through the Waitaki Valley, where you’ll pass by lakes, rivers, and vineyards. Once you finish the ride in Oamaru, you’ll be rewarded with a charming town full of Victorian architecture, art galleries, and the little blue penguins that wander the beach.
