We renovated a 160-year-old traditional house in 2023. The total site is 700 tsubo (2300 m ²), and the building is 170 m ², making it very spacious. While it is an 8-minute drive to Kumamoto Castle, it is a cottage where you can relax and unwind away from the hustle and bustle. The garden is full of trees and flowers, including a large camphor tree that has been there for over 160 years, black pines, Japanese maples, and bamboo forests, so you can enjoy the trees and flowers in all seasons. The host lives in the adjacent building, so you can feel at home. Take a big, deep breath and refresh yourself from the heart. ●Here’s what you need to know · There are many mosquitoes and insects because there is a garden with many trees. Yumiko’s place was unique and a great base for our stay in Minamiaso. She had great recommendations. We have not had the pleasure of staying in a Japanese home before and found it very comfortable. The container gallery was one of our favourite spots. We had breakfast, coffee and dinner there. The kitchen was well equipped. Area was quiet and the location was great. Can’t wait to stay here again! Thank you so much!

We had a lovely stay at this cozy cabin! The amenities were all adequate and everything we needed for a comfortable visit was provided. The highlight was definitely the private onsen vat—such a peaceful and relaxing experience, especially in the quiet surroundings. The cabin was clean and well-maintained, and communication with the host was smooth throughout. One thing to note is that the stairs inside the cabin are quite steep, which might be a bit challenging for some guests to go up and down, especially with luggage or for those with mobility concerns. Overall, a wonderful and relaxing getaway—we really enjoyed our time here and would recommend it to others looking for a tranquil retreat!

Hide-san is very kind and was there to walk us through every corner of the house. The well-stocked kitchen was very helpful as many restaurants closed early during golden week. On top of that, the toilet and bedding were both clean and comfortable. We drove to Kuju and Aso; distance wise, everything is below 1 hour. We will definitely stay again next time!

However taller guests do be careful of the middle ceiling as my 1.78cm son kept knocking his head when he was walking around the house. This is a home that I would love to stay in for the rest of my life. The scenery of the mountains and volcanoes outside the balcony patio is therapeutic. I enjoyed much of my time sitting in that room enjoying my meals and resting. Hiropon san is extremely helpful whenever I wasn’t sure of something. A great place to visit the many many sites of Aso, Kumamoto and Takachiho. My family were quite sad to leave this beautiful home!

They also told me about a lot of recommended restaurants, and everything I tried was delicious!
