There is plentiful wildlife in the park. Be sure to ask at the pay station for a map and ask where you can locate the Buffalo herd. Don't get too close to the buffalo they can be dangerous . Stopping to see and feed the tame donkeys is fun for everyone. They love healthy snacks like carrots and apples.

While you're in Custer state park make a stop here. There is a nice flat trail that circles the lake. For the more adventurous hiker Black Elk peak trail #9 is accessed from the parking lot. It's an approximate 3.5 hour hike to the highest point in South Dakota.

The breathtaking limestone palisades of this creek-carved gorge are more ancient than the Grand Canyon – albeit much closer together. Once accessible only by horseback, Spearfish Canyon’s narrow, 1000-foot walls are among the most spectacular scenery in the Black Hills. There are several waterfalls in the Canyon that you don't want to miss. Spearfish waterfalls are a short hike from the lodge. It's an amazing place to have a picnic.

The rugged beauty of the Badlands draws visitors from around the world. These striking geologic deposits contain one of the world’s richest fossil beds. Ancient horses and rhinos once roamed here. The park’s 244,000 acres protect an expanse of mixed-grass prairie where bison, bighorn sheep, prairie dogs, and black-footed ferrets live today.

Deadwood is a city in South Dakota known for its gold rush history. Mount Moriah Cemetery has the graves of Wild West figures like Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane. Exhibits at the Adams Museum include a huge gold nugget and a plesiosaur fossil. The 1892 Historic Adams House is a Victorian mansion with original features. South of town, the George S. Mickelson Trail leads through the Black Hills National Forest.  Deadwood is quite touristy and lined with casinos. There is a wild west gun fight reenactment every afternoon in the summer which is entertaining to watch.

The best restaurant in South Dakota as far as I'm concerned. Small, somewhat pricey restaurant but worth it for a good meal. Reservations are requied.

Good Indian/Nepalese food . I also enjoy their other restaurant Everest which has very similar food. It's off west Main street and easier to find parking.

If you're looking for a casual pizza place where you can enjoy a good pizza and a beer close to your rental this is the place. In the summer you can sit outside on the deck and enjoy the golf course and creek views.
