Granity Sands is set on the beach of the lovely, artistic village of Granity. The beach is at the bottom of the garden, and there are many iconic bush and beach walkways surrounding us.
  • Sande's place is a quirky comfortable and very unique home that backs straight onto the beach. Sande is very obliging and caring and also very passionate and knowledgeable about her town and surrounding area. She is a wonderful host who goes above and beyond and her pooch Max is adorable as well.

  • Sande's place was a wonderful place to wind down and relax after the Heaphy Tramp. There is a lovely deck area and garden and the end of the garden leads onto the beach - fabulous for walks. Sande made us feel very comfortable and welcome and even porvided a pot of home made soup on our arrival. Thank you again!

PLEASE READ DESCRIPTION AND "HOUSE RULES" THOROUGHLY BEFORE REQUESTING A RESERVATION. My place is close to Kahurangi National Park, Mokihinui River and Rivermouth, the Tasman Sea, Gentle Annie Point, Charming Creek and Chasm Creek Walkways, The Old Ghost Road Cycleway, and Cowshed Cafe. You’ll love my place because of the views, the location, the people, and the ambiance. My place is good for couples, solo adventurers, and families (with kids).
Our one-thousand acre property is set in surroundings where Aotearoa is as it used to be—lush, unspoiled and natural. A slice of paradise. Gentle Annie is an ideal place to get off the beaten track to experience New Zealand's untamed wilderness and truly appreciate the South Island’s West Coast. Bounded by the Tasman Sea, the mighty Mokihinui River and beautiful ancient bush, our seaside accommodation is a peaceful place to relax and enjoy time away from the busy life and provides a great base to explore our stunning region. Centrally located in the Northern West Coast, Gentle Annie is near places of interest where day trips will get you north to the magnificent Oparara Limestone Arches, the Kahurangi National Park, the Heaphy Track and south to the Chasm Creek and Charming Creek Walkways, Punakaiki Pancake Rocks, the Denniston Plateau and the Cape Foulwind Seal Colony. We are on the doorstep of the new Old Ghost Road mountain-biking track! In any season, enjoy time at Gentle Annie. It will nourish your soul and awaken your senses.
  • Amazing place, perfect to stay en route to the Heaphy. Loved making wood fired pizza, watching sunset on the west coast - great community and facilities, would have loved to stay longer.

  • Gentle Annies is a camp ground in the old style Kiwi tradition. Lovely people, amazingly beautiful location. Good amenities.

    Greg2017-03-30T00:00:00Z
  • A great wee bit secluded camping ground with a neat wee 2 room cabin. Has shared toilet and kitchen facility but a great wee cafe on site. Such a peaceful area at the mouth of the river and long beaches. Feel priveledged to have visited

    Mel2017-02-24T00:00:00Z
  • It's a wonderful place to stay. We really enjoyed our stay there and would definitely come back again.

    Lauritz2017-02-03T00:00:00Z
  • A place with a bit of taste of the world, the sea in an enchanting setting. The benefits of camping without the inconveniences. The tree house is very nice, good beds, a nice decor and a great view. You share the kitchen and bathroom with campers: it is sometimes a bit just like equipment. Jesse was very welcome and good advice for walks. You can also dine on site, the restaurant is a friendly and pleasant place that you can access when you want. The gardens are beautiful. I recommend this place.

    Mokihinui, West Coast, New Zealand

Situated in a rural mining settlement, 28kms from Westport on State Highway 67. A 1950's rustic family home with original decor and fixtures, a 1/2 acre section with houses each side. It has vege garden, fruit trees and hens. Goats are in the paddock backing on to native bush. It has a traditional coal/wood fire (dining room) and new log burner (living room) . Guest room has all day sun. Porch with sea view is accessed from outside. Sea is aprox 200metres from house across the highway.
Sea and bush view through bedroom windows. Fully fenced areas at the back of the house. The front porch is reached from outside. I have a big, friendly, obedient dog. Guests can use the usual kitchen appliances: stove, kettle, toaster, rice cooker, coffee maker, cutlery and crockery and fridge space Our tap water comes from a stream in the hill is used for washing/showering. Our rain water tank provides fresh clean water for drinking and cooking.
Granity is a typical, rural, westcoast settlement. It has a mild climate with few frosts in winter and some lovely hot days in summer. Most of the properties are about half an acre and its common for people to grow their own fruit and vegies and have a few chickens, or goats. The beach is 5min walk away across the railway track and over 1km long. We have the best Westcoast sunsets so bring your camera! Theres a cafe, craft shop, 2nd hand shop, library, plant nursery and museum in Granity. 4kms up the road in Ngakawau is convenience store, hotel and cafe, and Ngakawau swimming pool. also the start of Charming Creek Walkway. Hector Pottery is along this road. Stockton mine is up the hill to the north west about 15kms. It is a working, opencast mine. Granity was a typical mining town and coal is still used in many homes for warmth (open fire), water heating (wetback) and cooking (coal range oven) and on a winter night you can see the coal smoke over the houses. Charming Creek Walkway starts at Ngakawau and is an easy, short stroll along the Ngakawau River to historic mining scenery.
  • Chrissy is super kind and nice. Her dog is lovely and well- behaved. She also shared some interesting stories to us. Room is clean and spacious. Will definitely stay with her again if we travel Westport again.

  • Chrissy is a very organized and lovely host with a beautiful house. Our room had direct access to the porch with a fantastic view at the ocean. The beds are very comfortable, so we got a good rest before heading to our next stop. The area is very quiet and idyllic. However, the cherry on top was Chrissy's handsome dog Strike who is very friendly and welcoming. Overall, we really enjoyed our stay and can highly recommend the place, especially if you'd like to stay a little outside of town.

  • We spent three nights at Chrissy’s place and highly recommend the experience. Chrissy was extremely accommodating with information and tips on things to do in the local area. We even enjoyed a very nice walk with Chrissy and her lovely dog Striker. You won’t find a nicer canine anywhere. Everything about the house was as good or better than advertised. The home is extremely neat and tidy and probably a very good example of a traditional West Coast New Zealand home. Full marks for a great experience. Stay there if you have a chance.

    Blair2020-02-20T00:00:00Z
  • Chrissy is a great host who never tires of giving tips. Your house is nicely furnished and offers everything your heart desires. We had interesting conversations and shared our travel experiences. Thanks to Chrissy, we were brought closer to the life of kiwis in remote places. The room was large, quiet at night. We were able to park the car right in front of the entrance. Communication went smoothly. Next time we would stay longer

    Rebecca2020-02-16T00:00:00Z
  • We really enjoyed staying at Chrissy‘s. It was such a nice place to stay and it is very close to the sea so that we did see the sunset in the evenings which was pretty nice. Moreover, Chrissy is such a friendly and helpful host and we would recommend her to everyone. Furthermore, her dog Striker is a beautiful and cool dog and he made our stay to such s special one. All in all, the room was cute and tidy and it was a pleasure to stay with Chrissy and her dog.

If you love the sound of the sea then this is the place to be. Very relaxed atmosphere. Free ranging chickens are amusing to watch as they wander around the garden. Our space is large and open plan. Beach front access, spacious outdoor area. Great walking and mountain bike tracks.
Buller Mines Rescue building has alot of character remaining from when it was a working building, even down to the locker room style shower and toilet. It was once what the name suggests, a mines rescue building where mine workers were trained to perform rescues. We still have a working mine up the hill from us in Stockton which can be toured with prior booking through outback tours in Westport
The Charming Creek walkway is very close and is highly recommended. There's plenty of biking and walking tracks and you can access the beach from the house. Millerton bath house is worth a look too and Deniston is not that far away, there's alot of history up there.
  • Wonderful hospitality in a beautiful setting. Tania could not have been more accommodating during my stay, well worth spending at least one night in this tranquil place! Would highly recommend!

    Steven2020-03-09T00:00:00Z
  • A beautiful house in a wonderful beach location. Tania is incredibly hospitable and it was a pleasure to meet her and her husband. Everything was sparkling clean and comfortably furnished. We would have loved to stay longer

    Klaus2020-02-29T00:00:00Z
  • Tania has a beautifull spacious historical house with some characteristics of that period. A Nice green garden with chickens and ducks and especially Marley. You can walk directly on the beach from the garden. And not to forget an own seal colony on a rock in the sea. What do you want more. Tania was a great host.

    Arnold2020-02-04T00:00:00Z
  • We enjoyed our (too short!) stay at the house of Tania with the unforgettable view. Tania is a very nice person.

  • An outstanding place to stay with an equally outstanding host in Tania. It’s a great location if you’re prepared to make the effort.Wonderful setting and garden with the chickens, ducks and the beach literally a stone’s throw away

  • Really great and clean room right next to the beach. Lovely and caring hosts that gave lots of helpful tips for our travel. Thank you!

  • Everything is perfect here! The hole house is placed nearby the sea, its veranda with view to their beautiful garden. Tania and Michael were amazing, unbelievable kind and very oblingingly! We had such a great time there :)

    Tobias2020-01-03T00:00:00Z
  • Many thanks to Tania and Michael for hosting me at very short notice. They have a lovely home, beautifully maintained and full of character, engendering a sense of life on this part of the West Coast in the middle of last century. It is in an idyllic spot right on the beach and blissfully quiet at night. Their hospitality was outstanding.

Highly recommended by Lonely Planet, Rough Guide, DuMont and Peti Futé. Unique hydro-powered lodge 100m above the Tasman Sea. Ready access to beautiful beaches, rivers and walks. The lodge is only accessible via a 10 min walking track up the hill (REASONABLE LEVEL OF FITNESS REQUIRED). Luggage transport via prior arrangement. Self-catering (no breakfast provided). Shared bathrooms located in the main building. Due to its location the lodge is not suitable for children under 5 years of age.
The Old Slaughterhouse is a self-catering lodge and offers comfortable and affordable accommodation. Our rooms are simple but cosy and made up with linen, pillows, duvets and hot-water bottle (if needed) are provided. All rooms are surrounded by a large deck from which you can enjoy stunning views and sunsets over the Tasman Sea. Our facilities include: •Two double rooms: Comfortable double beds, fully made up •Two twin/triple rooms: The twin/triple rooms contains three fully made up single beds and can be booked either as a twin or a triple room • Shared bathroom facilities (2 showers, 2 toilets), LOCATED IN THE MAIN BUILDING, a short walk from the bedrooms •Space for tents •Shared kitchen: Our spacious kitchen is fully equipped, there are two gas hobs and an oven available, lots of pots and pans, crockery, cutlery and of course a fridge but no microwave. Tea and coffee is available at any time. All you'd need to bring is your own food.
The Old Slaughterhouse offers you a choice of either a relaxing retreat or an activity filled visit. There are many kilometres of unspoilt deserted beaches, beautiful rivers and fascinating walks in close proximity, like the Charming Creek Walkway, one of the South Island's top five short walks. If you love the outdoors, explore the numerous mountain bike and walking tracks in this area, such as the Old Ghost Road, or discover the region's mining history by visiting the Denniston Mine. Or simply sit back and relax to enjoy the tranquility and peace at this unique place, 100 metres above the sea: read a book, listen to music and feel free to do nothing. On many occasions during the summer months you can observe from our verandas Hector's Dolphins surfing and feeding in the water. It's a truly unique experience! Situated almost halfway between Punakaiki and Karamea, The Old Slaughterhouse is the ideal place to plan your day trips. Spend a day in Punakaiki to explore the iconic Pancake Rocks, and experience the wonders of the West Coast Heritage highway. In Karamea you will find the start of the Heaphy Track, one of New Zealand's famous Great Walks, and the Oparara Basin, both truly magic places to visit – even for a day. ... and then come back and sit back on the veranda to watch a breathtaking sunset. If you enjoy being surrounded by peace and tranquility, uninterrupted views of the sea, bush and sky, beautiful sunsets, birdsong and nature, then you will enjoy your stay at The Old Slaughterhouse traveller's lodge.

  • We loved our Stay at Fiona's. Beautiful location above the river. The stars at night were amazing. It was a bit tricky to see the address and find it because it is set so far back from the road. Additional directions would have been helpful, but the privacy was much appreciated!

  • One of our favourite places to stay from our holiday in NZ! Location is just priceless if you are after quiet and picturesque spot to relax. Cottage is perfectly equipped and spotless with everything working as it should. We loved being able to access the river nearby. Having dinner outside, listening to the passing river with beautiful starry sky above was very special. And the rest of the town is just few minutes walk away. Just perfect!

  • We were very happy for our one night stay at this quiet country place just one long block from restaurants and the main street through Murchison. It was clean and well equipped for longer stays. We enjoyed sitting on the covered porch in the late afternoon and evening as well as having morning coffee out there. Sunny both times of day in the summer. Satellite WiFi only worked outside on the covered porch, but it was fast enough and not a problem for us. There were farm animals around in the small paddocks but there wasn’t an insect problem. We enjoyed the location and recommend Fiona’s place!

A gorgeous location on the banks of the Orowaiti River and less than 2km from Westport town centre. The perfect place to watch the ever changing river and abundant bird life. Relax in the comfortable, stylish open plan living area or soak up the sun and views of water and mountains from the extensive deck. Westport is a great base for anyone who loves beaches, surfing, fishing and nature walks. The Old Ghost Road is a magnet for hikers and bikers.
We have a canoe available for adventures on the river and a big back yard for kids to play. We also have a portacot available which can be made up ready for you.
  • We absolutely loved staying at Alison's house - it was very spacious and comfortable but we did note the traffic was very noisy, particularly during the night. Despite this we all slept well in the comfy beds and would definitely stay again.

  • An exceptionally beautiful and peaceful spot. An exceptional view from the very spacious living area and generous deck also. Wonderful bushwalks within easy drives. Lovely just walking from the house to the Gentle Annie Maze or along the beach. Comfy beds and pretty well-equipped kitchen. Such a friendly vibe at the Cowshed Cafe, along with dangerously delicious brownies and a fun way to create and cook your own pizza in the great pizza oven there. Great communication with our host. • We were told that in Westport it can rain. So we chose this big house and it rained (for 1 day) there was so much to do in doors. Michelle really thinks about the extra touches to make your experience fabulous. House is located 45 minutes drive from Westport in a rural setting. Beach access is 5 minutes drive and a must go to. Easy drive to many lovely walks. So many things to do outdoors also. Thank you again.

  • Great location for exploring the area. Very quiet and everything we needed to cook our own meals. Quick responses to questions.

    Melani2019-03-27T00:00:00Z
  • This a is a great place. It is large and comfortable with good cooking facilities and very well equipped modern kitchen. The view across the estuary from the kitchen is beautiful and the wood burning stove gives the living room a nice cosy feel in the evenings. There is no drier but there is an indoors clothes rack that works well beside the wood burner. Both the phone signal and Wi-fi are however very weak (one bar) so that even typing in the Wi-fi password was often unsuccessful.

  • The Sea-barn is great. It is comfortable and spacious. The wood heated cedar bath is lovely. There are lots of thoughtful touches like farm fresh eggs. Ann-Marie & Graham were really accomodating about us leaving gear and car while doing the Old Ghost Road - it’s a perfect location if you are a mountain biker and want to do the OGR plus Charming Creek, or the Denniston Return as well (which we did). The stay is right by the beach and we enjoyed a dip in the West Coast sea too. We will be returning there for sure.

The bach/cabin is on a corner of seven acre block set well away from the main house so you have your own privacy. This is fully off the grid hydro and solar powered 2 bedroom BASIC BUDGET BACH / CABIN The bach isn’t huge as shown in the photos it is only just over 40sqm.The bedrooms are only 2.4 m x 2.8 m one bedroom has a double bed. The other room has bunk beds. All beds are very comfortable and linen is supplied. From the lounge you look out over farm land out to the Tasman Sea. Listen to the birds and the creek, or to the distant sea and the odd rumble of a passing coal train or just the shear nothing but the gentle breeze and the grass growing. Step outside on a clear night and be amazed at the amount of stars you can see. It has gas hot water and gas oven stove, pots pans etc. It has a small wooden deck at the front. There is no lawn the yard is done in road chip. Outside is a wooden picnic table and sun umbrella. Also there is a small BBQ. It is priced accordingly to reflect what it is. I built this house in 2001 it has been well lived in since then so not a perfect show home... I dont have OCD so yes you could find a spiderweb or some fluff on the carpet. We don't waste power ironing sheets and duvet covers they are washed hung on line then folded so yes may have creases I LEAVE THE GUESTS TO THEMSELVES I TRY NOT TO INTRUDE ON YOU OR YOUR TIME WHEN YOU STAY But are only a text messages away if you cannot work out how something works. We do supply a detailed instruction manual including pictures on things like stove hot water the power etc work. You can interact with our friendly farm animals calves sheep and pet goats depending what orphans we have inherited this year. Step outside on a clear night and check out the stars you can see or listen to the tree frogs chirping. Hydro Heights has three double bed rooms available and a fold out sofa bed a porta cot so can accommodate up to 8 guest All rooms have very comfortable beds, Bedding and towels are supplied. The owner lives on site in another building and is available if anything should need dealing to or issues arise with the power or anything you cannot work. You just need to ask. Please do not leave a note at the end of your stay to say you could not get something to work. We are here and happy to assist.
A Quite semi rural setting. Great views from the lounge out over farmland to the Tasman Sea. The beach is only 2 minutes drive you can surf cast off the beach in summer. There is a quite country pub which does a nice meal just down the road approx 2 mins
  • This quiet and fully equipped (even games, bikes and toys for kids, as all baking and cooking things) was very nice. We had a great time. The hen and goats were pleasant companions. We recommend.

  • A great stay in your ‘off grid’ home. Lovely comfortable bed, warm greeting from the goats, chicken and weka and wow what stunning panoramic views. We loved the peace and quiet and enjoyed the hospitality and food at The Pines Tavern

  • Well appointed private place, plenty for the kids to do and play.

    Dan2020-03-01T00:00:00Z
  • Pauline's place is exactly what its marketed to be, comfortable rural kiwi living, no frills, good value and we enjoyed our stay. Everything worked perfectly. The fireplace and the view were a treat.

    Ramsey2020-02-09T00:00:00Z
  • We enjoyed our stay at Pauline's. Clean and tidy, warm with great views. It was well equipped with everything you could need. Clear instructions regarding your stay and about the hydro power usage which was interesting for our mechanically minded 13 year old! Would love to stay again if/when we are back in the area.

    Janine2020-01-22T00:00:00Z
  • We couldn't give a "perfect" score because this is typical NZ rural living, so there are a few challenges for the uninitiated, especially around water and power use. Still, it's a lovely location and very quiet, and the place is very well equipped. We enjoyed our short stay very much. Thanks

It's a lovely, quiet, self-contained room, with kitchenette, bathroom and its own front porch. It has two king-single beds, a fridge, a microwave, a heater, a fan, a hair-dryer, a DVD player and WIFI...You wake to the sound of the river, within a stone's throw, and birdsong....

(an hour and a half from Nelson or the West Coast, three and a half hours from Christchurch). There are eight rivers weaving through this valley among the mountains. It's one of the gateways to Kahurangi National Park. It's also the whitewater capital of New Zealand - with kayaking, whitewater rafting, bush tramps, gold-fossicking and, arguably, some of the best brown trout fishing the country has to offer...
The Front Room is walking distance to all of Murchison, and looks out on paddocks, poplars, beeches and willows leading down to the river. This little settlement is surrounded by mountains and, sometimes, mist which loops the bush-covered hills like a river ghost. In winter, we have frosts and snow - in summer, the temperature can soar above 35 under a bright, cloudless sky. Murchison (permanent pop. 490-ish) has cafes, a museum, a kayak school, a butcher with the best bacon in the South Island, a patisserie with a wonderful French pastry chef, white-water rafting on NZ's longest untamed river, a swing bridge (just down the road) and there's gold in them thar rivers...!
  • I would highly recommend staying here. We had a very short stay but it was great. Everything you needed was there, including a teapot with teacosy. There was some fantastic artistic furniture and pieces, a wide selection of books and dvds. Good kitchen and home grown plums. The beds were very comfortable and the place was clean. We loved chatting to our hosts Margy and Lindsay and would definitely return, should we ever return to NZ.

  • We had a lovely overnight stay while on our way to Abel Tasman. The hosts greeted us so warmly. You can tell how much they love their home. The studio was quiet, private, clean, and filled with fun art and some handmade furniture. The little kitchen had just what we needed to make a quick microwave meal. We had fresh fruit waiting for us as well. We would definitely recommend this place.

  • This is a top place! The house and space are a wonderful mix of old and modern. An old time Kiwi house with mod cons: The room (s) are spacious comfortable and sparkling clean. Loved it. The two woman are a hoot! Fun and engaging ( if you wish ) full of life and tips of where to go who to speak too etc Will leave you alone if that’s what you wish or engage with some wine and stimulating conversation. Great spot stay for a few days Andrew
