Cob Cottage

Channel the pursuit of pause in this one-of-a-kind earth house. The cozy retreat was hand-sculpted using local and sustainable natural materials, and features a central living space with cantilevered slab stairs leading to the loft bedroom. Guests have access to the entire cottage and surrounding property. We live in the neighbouring house, and are happy to give advice or answer questions to help you make the most of your stay. The neighborhood is quite rural and mostly agricultural with several farms and a small private vineyard. The home is a 10 minute walk from the beach and a 20 minute walk from a family grocery and deli specializing in local organic produce. Mayne Island has a small community bus. Times and routes are limited, particularly in the winter. It will stop at the driveway. We also have an official hitch hiking system with signed Car Stops where you can wait for a ride. Usually you don't have to wait long. We are happy to offer pickup and drop off at the ferry dock as a courtesy to encourage car-free travellers, on days when the community bus is not running. Please let us know ahead of time that you'll be coming without your own transportation, and we will make sure that either we or the community bus (which will drop you off at our driveway) are there to meet you when your ferry arrives. The BC Ferries terminals near Victoria and Vancouver are easily reachable via public transit from their respective airports and downtowns.

There isn’t a SINGLE negative thing to say about this stay. It was so modern yet so homely. We could make ourselves completely at home. The house was stocked with everything we needed. It was immaculately clean and well maintained. The beds were super comfortable, the bathroom were are heated. The hot tub was super clean (even had a maintenance Check and clean while we were there!) and the views from the tub and house are UNREAL. It was worth every single cent. This house and experience was truly the best we have ever stayed with on airbnb. The house were so responsive, understanding and helpful also. We would come back all the way from Aus again just for this stay. A homely but really upscale and beautiful built and well maintained home. The only place to consider staying in Port Renfrew !

We had a wonderful stay at Shawn’s place that we actually came back the second time already! The property is wonderful and Shawn was an amazing host. He’s communicative and accommodating as we booked last minute and had to check in pretty late. He also provided details about the house in advance that’s easy to follow. Would 100% recommend for anyone who’s looking to stay!

We were lucky enough to get to meet Emma as the guest suite is located in the bottom floor of her family home (also with your own private parking and patio/garden space). Emma is so warm and friendly. We loved having the chance to chat and appreciated the helpful local recommendations on walking/biking in the area (Bald Mountain is just down the road, we also hired bikes from Cycle Therapy in Duncan for the Cowichan Valley Trail and ferry to Salt Spring Island from Crofton was also within 45 minutes drive). We saw beautiful elk and even a bear(!) hiking in the local area. The space is very large and well put together with all amenities you need and a wood fired sauna (and cold plunge!) that we very much enjoyed after all the exercise.

An outdoor patio space is presented, featuring a small round table with two folding chairs. Surrounding greenery includes a potted plant and a planter with colorful flowers. The area is enclosed by wooden structures and steps leading to the upper level.

Amazing place to stay in Lake Cowichan. Great for a solo traveller or couple. Very clean and cozy, Kelly provided everything needed for a perfect stay, I would most definitely recommend.
