A haven of tranquillity: a twin room with a view

AnnaRating, 5 stars34 months ago
I was given a tip off for Daniella’s AirBnB by a friend, and booked in for a few days after a couple of weeks travelling. So glad I did … it is a peaceful and mesmerising place. Although in such a rural and tranquil setting, Dani’s place it very accessible from Fort Portal if like me you were travelling by bus with a trusty rucksack on your back. I took a boda boda which Dani had sent to collect me from the bus, strapped my rucksack to the back and we took off. After a couple of kilometres we had left the main road and took a deep breath as suddenly there were a couple of beautiful crater lakes at each side of the road which creeps along the crater rim. The vistas are breath-taking – the hills, the depth of the lake, the sloping sides and the trees growing at different heights. Mostly, it was the most refreshing sight after days in the road and visiting schools and community projects. I felt completely at home in the cosy twin room, with fresh bedsheets and a lovely warm shower. There is a little sitting room beside with a kitchenette, or an outside area just outside the room which is perfect for sitting with your book and coffee. I zoned out for the first day and pretended to read my book, really I kept looking at the view, taking it all in – the near and distant sounds, the birdsong. There is quite a lot to do in the immediate area – a walk up the hill behind the house for a 360 degree view of the lakes, Fort Portal and the foothills of the Rwenzori Mountains, swimming in the crater lake and a number of routes for gentle walks. I spent a day in Fort Portal, taking in the town, getting my coffee fix, eating local food, some crafts I hadn’t seen elsewhere, and a shady tour of the Tooro Botanical Gardens. I finished off my day with a pizza from the Dutchess café and bakery. Another day I went to the Amabere caves and waterfall, a pleasant local attraction that is walkable from Dani’s. I arranged to eat at Dani’s for one of the evenings, which was a delightful meal and good chat and interesting stories, with someone who has tried and tested meals from rustling up the best from local produce for many years. You will pinch yourself when you are there, I stayed for 3 nights but wish I had booked for four. Felt like I needed another day just to sit, drink coffee and read. When you stay, set your alarm early and sit own on the veranda just as the dawn begins to break … you feel like you are within the bowl that forms the crater lakes – the sound of birds and wildlife and people’s early morning activities envelopes, and the sun coming up. Just beautiful.

A truly unique place where we could relax and feel good to be in Kampala. The house and large room are decorated with hundreds of works of art; and there is a nice balcony with a view into the garden/bar/restaurant area. Sue, the owner, and all staff are warm and helpful, and made us feel very welcomed. We really enjoyed our stay!

Perfect location for a conference at Munyonyo Commonwealth Resort. Jones is very helpful and ready to help. Gave us a brief of the buganda kingdom, he graciously requested his driver to drop me at the resort on the first day. My friend came to see the place and loved it as well she took the spare room. I'd definitely recommend.
