The museum has a large collection of fossils, of which about 6000 are on display and the other 250.000 are kept in a safe. The research department is still very much active and next to documentation, and exhibition, geologists specialising in fosils, stones, minerals and volcanoes (quoted from street directory)

Geological Museum was established on 16 May 1928 . The museum has been renovated with a grant from JICA ( Japan International Cooperation Agency ). After undergoing renovation, the Geological Museum reopened and inaugurated by the Vice President of Indonesia, Megawati Sukarnoputri on 23 August 2000 . As one of the historic monuments, museums are under the protection of government and the national heritage. In this museum, stored and managed geological materials are abundant, such as fossils, rocks, minerals. All of which were collected during the fieldwork in Indonesia since 1850 .
