Objectively one of the most beautiful churches in the world, the cathedral offers breathtaking Byzantine mosaics dating from the time of the Norman occupation of Sicily. The small citadel surrounding the cathedral provides a refreshing escape from the bustle and heat of Palermo. During the day snack on the local pane cunzato followed by a gelato, or stay until the evening and book a table at bricco e bacco for an upmarket steak dinner. Just a 30 minute drive away from the property but also accessible by bus for the more intrepid traveller. For me no visit to Palermo would be complete without a trip to the Cathedral and citadel.

The Cathedral of Monreale is really unique, with its golden mosaics and the graves of two Norman kings inside of it, its beauty and solemnity is a must to see.

The Cathedral of Monreale (Italian: Duomo di Monreale) is a church in Monreale, Metropolitan City of Palermo, Sicily, southern Italy. One of the greatest existent examples of Norman architecture, it was begun in 1174 by William II of Sicily. In 1182 the church, dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, was, by a bull of Pope Lucius III, elevated to the rank of a metropolitan cathedral. Since 2015 it is part of the Arab-Norman Palermo and the Cathedral Churches of Cefalù and Monreale UNESCO Heritage site.
