Centrally located near Duke University, you can enjoy the permanent collection, begun in 1969 with the acquisition of medieval art, and move on to appreciate the focused and intentional emphasis on work by artists of African descent and global, emerging artists of color. Just around the corner from Duke Gardens!

The Nasher Museum of Art (previously the Duke University Museum of Art) is the art museum of Duke University, and is located on Duke's campus in Durham. In 1969, the university established the Duke University Museum of Art on Duke's East Campus with medieval art from the Ernest Brummer Collection. In the early twenty-first century, in part from a gift by alumnus Raymond Nasher, the museum became known as the Nasher Museum of Art and opened on the central campus in a new building designed by architect Rafael Viñoly. Since its reopening, annual attendance is about 100,000 visitors.

Duke’s museum right near the gardens has a lovely permanent collection and is just the right size to enjoy a few hours browsing without getting overwhelmed. Pro-Tip: Admission is free all day Thursday.
