Why locals recommend it

West Reservoir is used for open-water swimming during the summer, but I like to run round it on winter mornings, as the reservoir always seems to have a spooky mist covering it. Whenever I’ve been there, it’s been pan flat, so you get a great reflection of the London cityscape. From Highbury Fields, run along Newland Walk—an old railway line—to Clissold Park, one of London’s finest, with its own woodland trail. Then head to West Reservoir; dip a toe into Finsbury Park before heading back to Highbury Fields via Gillespie Park. That’s 10.5 km.

This is one of the most popular outdoor swimming spots in North London – as well as swimming, you can take part in water polo, canoeing, kayaking and sailing.

Wide array of water activity offered in a unique setting. Instructors are great, cafe has some amazing food and the place in itself is a quiet oasis.

Wonderful opportunity to see birds and boats for a quiet walk around somewhere that feels completely removed from London
