Inaugurato nel 1927, su progetto dell'architetto Arduino Berlam, oltre a svolgere la sua funzione di guida alla navigazione notturna illuminando il Golfo di Trieste, è anche monumento commemorativo dedicato ai marinai caduti durante la Prima Guerra Mondiale, così come tetimoniato dalla iscrizione posta alla base: "Splendi e ricorda i caduti sul mare (MCMXV - MCMXVIII)".
