Dated from 1296 Wat Chiang Man is considered the oldest temple of Chiang Mai, a must visit free entrance temple with a beautiful pagoda decored with elephants.

Wat Chiang Man is the most beautiful and oldest temple in Chiang Mai, Thailand, having been constructed in 1296 with the foundation of the city itself. It is located in north east corner of the old walled city, about 200 meters from Chang Puak gate in the north wall. When King Mengrai decided to build a new city and make it the new capital of the Lanna Kingdom, he build the Wat Chiang Man as the first temple of the new city. There are two viharans (halls) in the temple. The larger of the two is an impressive building with a three tiered roof. The Wat Chiang Man is the oldest temple in Chiang Mai and goes back all the way to the founding of the city in 1296. When King Mengrai decided to build a new city and make it the new capital of the Lanna Kingdom, he build the Wat Chiang Man as the first temple of the new city on the site he used to supervise the construction of Chiang Mai.
