Tips from locals
Chester Cathedral is many things to many people: a vibrant community of worship, an ancient abbey, an archaeological treasure, a cultural hub, a centre of musical excellence and a unique blend of medieval and modern history. Plus it is free to enter and welcome thousands of visitors from all over the world.
There's usually something going on here and even if there are no art exhibitions or recitals when you visit, the cathedral is still worth looking around. Also make sure you check out the lovely Grade II-listed Georgian Abbey Square next to the cathedral. The Bishop's House is here and also look out for the two sandstone cottages built in 1626. We lived in number 13 for a while, so if you want some insider information on the interior, just ask.
