Hiking. Surround by suburbs, the valley is often dismissed by locals and visitors. Once you actually get into the valley and start hiking along Penasquitos Creek you feel like you left the city. The hike is best in Spring or late Winter when water levels are high and temperatures are comfortable. The western trail head can be found near where Sorrento Valley Blvd meets the 805 and 5. You'll have to hike quite a bit before encountering trees and water. Another good place to enter and get into the trees and creek-side fast is from Camino Ruiz neighborhood Park. Bring water and sunscreen!

The Rancho Peñasquitos Waterfall is not much of a waterfall by normal standards, but for San Diego, I guess this is what we qualify as one. Los Peñasquitos Canyon is characterized by varied natural resources. Evidence of the rich biodiversity of the canyon include over 500 plant species, more than 175 types of birds, and a great variety of reptiles, amphibians and mammals. Many of these species are rare or endangered and are protected within the Preserve.
