The myth tells that Arethusa begged the godess Athena to be trasformed into a fountain in order to escape Alfeo, who - terribly in love - was following her. Now the waters of the river Alfeo flow into the fountain Arethusa, which is commonly known as "Fontana delle Papere" (Ducks' Fountain). Here, Papyrus grows.
