From the peak of the San Giorgio, at 1,000 m elevation in southern Ticino, you can enjoy a view overlooking the lake and the mountains that offer unforgettable glimpses of the region. However, the San Giorgio especially prides itself in its accession to the UNESCO World Heritage Sites thanks to its fossils. These are exhibited at the Museum in Meride, designed by Ticino architect Mario Botta. In a couple of hours' walk you can reach the summit from Meride while, on the way down, you can choose the western route on one of the most interesting segments, the Geo-paleontological path.

Gandria is an unspoiled, picturesque lakeside village at the foot of Monte Brè. Perched on the steep mountainside it is a community of narrow streets, inaccessible to cars, with a delightful surprise round every corner. Many tourists and locals enjoy the boat trip from Lugano and the walk back to Castagnola on the Olive Path along the lake shore. At Castagnola there’s the possibility of visiting the Museum of Cultures or simply proceeding on foot to Lugano. The town’s centre that is closed to traffic is an oasis of peace with its picturesque tiny streets and stairs that offer glimpses of great views and gorgeous landscapes. At the centre of the town there is the 16th century church of San Vigilio with its outstanding baroque interior and the high late-medieval belfry. On the lake opposite Gandria, one finds the Museum of Swiss Customs that is located in a locality known as “Cantine di Gandria” that may be reached by boat. Along the trail from Cantine di Gandria to Caprino there are several grotti, an ideal place to take shelter from the heat and to have the opportunity of getting a taste of the typical Ticinese cuisine.

With its characteristic small alleys, the arcades of old patrician homes, valuable architectural monuments and its natural beauty, Morcote is considered “the Pearl of Ceresio”. Of particular architectural interest, is the church of Santa Maria del Sasso, the terraced cemetery and the Tower of the Captain. For those who love the nature and peace of these places, the beautiful Scherrer gardens, full of exquisite subtropical flora on the lakefront, is the perfect setting. Morcote has all the characteristics for tourists to feel welcome as guests and offers various excursions and other relaxing opportunities. The riverlake where Morcote is situated is surrounded by typical houses with porches and "loggias": among them you will see the Paleari House, an elegant residence of lords constucted in 1483 and transformed in 1661. The decoration with the beautiful "stucco" was made by the artist Abbondio Paleari (1661). Between the houses you can see the Tower of Capitano (XIV century), while on the upper part of the main entrance you'll find some fresco paintings and a gothic "bifora". The steps lead you to a beautiful complex made of the Church of S. Maria del Sasso, the cimitery and the Chappel of S. Antonio of Padova. Along the rise you'll cross the Chappel of S. Antonio, and the fountain dedicated to the Fossati family.
