A trip round the Royal Yacht is surprisingly interesting. You get a real sense of what it was like with the Royal Family living on board. Our Grandparents particularly loved this.

Parks & Nature

Go through the gate over the road and you are straight into Holyrood Park. Walk immediately up and over the park to find St Margaret's Loch with ducks and geese, and the bottom of the walk up to St Anthony's Chapel.

Stand on Arthur's Seat for amazing views across the city, the Firth of Forth and towards the Pentland Hills. Wear good walking shoes at it gets a bit "scrambly" at the top.

If you want some downtime from city sightseeing then we are only 2 miles from the sandy beaches of Portobello. If you want to walk, head through Lochend Park to the Restalrig Railway Track Path and turn right. Alternatively catch the bus. Portobello has a range of really lovely cafes and ice cream shops.

A 15 minute stroll across the park and up Canogate for the best Hog Roast - choose apple sauce, haggis and other options for a delicious lunchtime roll. Take it back to the park and eat sitting looking at Arthur's Seat for a super picnic.

This is street food served in the basement of the Mosque. It is extremely good curry and the proceeds go to community projects. This is heaving throughout the term as students always eat their lunches here. Don't be fooled by the 'Mosque Kitchen' which is on Nicolson Street in a swanky building. This is NOT the original Mosque.

There are numerous bus stops near us for getting around the city. We would recommend downloading the App "Transport for Edinburgh". This gives live information about buses, routes, and times. It has a very good planning option which will give you detailed information about the best route to get from A to B. You will need exact fare for the buses as they don't give change. I suggest downloading the app 'm-tickets' which works with the 'Transport for Edinburgh' app and allows you to purchase many tickets using your card.

Shopping

"Never knowingly undersold" John Lewis is one of our favourite shops for everything from household goods to designer clothes. Its about 20 minutes walk (or 5 mins bus) straight along the A1. Try having coffee in the top floor cafe for views of the town, and the building site that will soon become a super new shopping mall. 2 year old Bertie especially loves watching the cranes.
