Sightseeing

No trip to this corner of North Yorkshire is complete without a visit to Vanbrugh's masterpiece, the scene of Brideshead Revisited and a great day out for all the family. There is plenty to see in the magnificent gardens, and if you have children they will love Skelf Island! Christmas is a big event at the Castle and there is usually a themed display, but you will need to book in advance for this. If you have time, visit the Yorkshire Arboretum (see separate listing).

A wonderful place to wander, there is an excellent cafe. The Arboretum welcomes well behaved dogs on leads, and the entrance is just on the opposite site of the monument to the Castle itself.

The most northerly lavender farm in the country, Yorkshire lavender is truly spectacular when the plants are in bloom on the south facing slope. Plenty out of season too, with a great selection of lavender and other plants for sale.

Visit the ruins of Kirkham Priory, just off the A64 and situated on the banks of the River Derwent. A perfect place to stop if on a family day out or if you're walking or cycling in this area of outstanding beauty and discover the story of monk's life or enjoy a picnic by the river in the Augustinian ruins.

As a keen gardener I may be biased, but one of my favourite days out includes Scampston Walled Gardens at its heart. Piet Oudolf's garden gets better every year, and is at its best .... at any time of the year, I think! The autumn colours are a surprise, but then again so are the wild flowers on 'the mound' in the spring! There are plant sales all year round, and an excellent cafe. Highly recommended!

A local legend since the 1980s, Florios is a fantastic Italian restaurant which is always busy - it's wise to ring ahead and book a table.

A traditional Yorkshire inn offering fantastic Italian food and a great selection of real ale. A very atmospheric pub lit by candles in the evenings. We love it!

My favourite place to eat in Malton. Vegetarian and vegan food from around the world. Take away or eat in upstairs in the quirky upstairs area. Always a varied menu with a few excellent staples (burrito or mezze salad good choices - try the moreish homemade tortilla chips!).

The gelato made here is world class. Michelle and her team are super friendly and welcoming. You may have to queue ... but believe me, it's worth it!
