Portland has a minor league baseball team affiliated with the Red Sox - the Portland Sea Dogs. Generally tickets are modestly priced and easy to get (especially compared with trying to get to Fenway) and the games are very family-friendly with funny games and presentations between every inning.

Sightseeing

Bug Light Park in South Portland is one of our favorites, it is a fantastic place to fly a kite or have a bike ride (you'd have to bring kites and bikes with you) and it showcases one of the many lighthouses in the area. You could easily spend a day spotting lighthouses throughout Southern Maine.

There are ferries that run from Portland to the nearby islands with the Peaks Island ferry running most frequently. Peaks Island is a great place to spend a few hours - getting ice cream, doing the island's loop on a golf cart or on bikes (reserve either ahead of time).
