The zoo is free and only a 15-20 minute walk away. It is downhill to get there, and you have to walk uphill to get back. It's located in serene Rock Creek Park, and it's a lovely walk through the Mt. Pleasant neighborhood to get there. Stop by Elle or Peach Plum for a coffee and a pastry on your way.
