Pelorinho is in the older part of the upper city, or Cidade Alta, of Salvador. It encompasses several blocks around the triangular Largo, and it is the location for music, dining, and nightlife. Pelourinho was the old slave auction location in the days when slavery was common. Slavery was outlawed in 1835, and over time, this portion of the city, though home to artists and musicians, fell into disrepair. In the 1990's, a major restoration effort resulted in making the area a highly desirable tourist attraction. Pelourinho has a place on the national historic register and named a world cultural century by UNESCO.

If time allows, a trip to the old fishing village Morro de São Paolo on the island of Tinharé. The main beaches (1st - 5th beach) are located on the east side of the island. The trip is normally done by catamaran from the Salvador Ferry Terminal (~2 hours) or by plane from the Airport (~20 minutes). This place used to be a small distant village, but due to its beauty and special atmosphere, it has today grown into a central tourists hot spot.

Traveler advice

Getting around

Barra can be done by foot. Take taxi or Uber in the evening

Getting around in Barra can be done by foot. Beach and shopping is very close to the apartment. For longer trips, Taxis and Uber are relatively easy to hike as well. It can, though, sometimes take a while - especially in the summertime and during carnival. There is free parking in the building and the roads around are in a relatively good condition.
Don't miss

Pelourinho

The Historic Center of Salvador, known as the Pelourinho, has been a UNESCO World heritage site since 1985. It was the city center during the Portuguese colonial period and is widely known as the largest colonial complex in Latin America. You might be lucky and experience professional drummers performing on the streets.
Customs and culture

Street performers might ask you to pay for taking photo

You’ll meet different kinds of street performers - especially in the historical center. Bahian ladies dressed in traditional clothes, people dancing Capoeira on the streets. It is special indeed. However, if you take photos of them, they might expect you to pay them. The same goes for people helping you finding parking spaces.
Ways to save

Use water from the filter machine

Tap water in Brazil is not potable. But you don’t have to buy water in the stores. Use the filter machine next to the fridge. It will provide you with fresh and clean water. It is serviced regularily to ensure high level of hygiene.
