The present Stirling Old Bridge was built in the 1400s or 1500s, replacing a succession of timber bridges. One of these bridges was the location of the famous Battle of Stirling Bridge where Sir William Wallace and Sir Andrew Moray defeated Edward I’s forces in 1297. After the Battle of Stirling Bridge, William Wallace was knighted and put in sole command of the Scottish troops. Today you can still cross the beautiful medieval stone bridge and see Stirling Castle in the distance one way and Wallace monument the other.
