Sightseeing

Visit the tiny church of St Peter's in Heysham, dramatically perched on a cliffside. This Grade I Listed church must have one of the most picturesque settings in the country, looking out over Morecambe Bay to the panorama of the Lakeland hills. There remains some of the Anglo-Saxon building from around 800AD but most of the present building dates from the 14th century. Inside the church is a Norse hog-back stone from around 1000AD and a chalice discovered in a stone coffin outside the church

Viking Church Ruins with the best views! The village has a fascinating history, dating back to Viking times. There is an 8th century chapel – St Patrick’s – and iconic rock hewn graves on the dramatic headlands overlooking the Bay just past St Peter’s Church. Managed by the National Trust, this is a truly wonderful urban green space to visit. There is an App available which explains the history of these ruins and of the area.

Morecambe Bay is an estuary with arguably the most fantastic views over the mountains of the Lake District. However, please be aware that if you walk too far out when the tide is low, there are fast flowing tides and quick sands. I always take care not to wander too far out. Fishing off the rocks near to St Peter’s Church at high tides, you can catch flatties and sometimes sea bass. Cockles can frequently be found on the beach. Swimming is one of my favourite past times, with the most fabulous views, but I am always careful to swim before the tide starts going out as currents can be strong. (Swim at your own risk). You will find a Tide Book in this folder.
