Plan to spend time on the beach with your beach chair, picnic or head over for an amazing sunset. Chuburna Puerto offers a pier which is a 10 min walk from Casa Ixtul. The pier is a great place to watch sea life, try fishing, or watch the local fisherman make their catch. On summer weekends, you can find local jewelry, vendors, and drink fresh coconut water at the entrance of the pier. It is also approx 10,000 steps to walk (approx 1 hr depending on how fast you walk) from Casa Ixtul to the beautiful beach at Land's End (walk when the tide is low, West on the beach as far as you can go to the end!). The town is walkable to tiendas which offers basics including fruit and vegetables, fresh juice, and pastries. There is one OXXO which carries a larger variety of drinks and snacks at the entrance into Chuburna Puerto. There is a Six store conveniently located within a very short walk east of Casa Ixtul. There are a few restaurants within the area that are walkable or you may prefer a tuk tuk. There are tuk tuks at the square to transport you around the village or to take you to Chelem. There are collectivo's that you can catch in the square that will take you into Progreso at approximately 40 pesos. Progreso is located 16 km. west of Chuburna Puerto. The Collectivo's generally leave every half hour. The square is about a 10 min walk from Casa Ixtul. We can also arrange a private driver to take you on longer trips into Merida or other areas. Chuburná and Chicxulub were declared lookouts in 1663 during the government of Don Juan Francisco Esquivel de la Rosa, for the defense of the north coast against the incursion of pirates operating from Laguna de Terminos. Chuburná was since then a supplier of fish to the state capital. He was included in the Party of Mérida like Progreso on July 24, 1867.

Saying hello to the locals

Depending on the time of the day, try saying Buenos Dias (good morning), Buenas Tardes (good afternoon), Buenas Noches (good evening), or Buen Dia (good day) This is a great way to connect with the locals. The locals will usually smile, wave, and say hello back to you.

Additional Transportation Notes

It is advisable, due to our remote location in a fishing village of 2800 people, that you plan your transportation appropriately. if you do not come to Casa Ixtul with a car, please enquire about transportation ahead of time, especially during peak vacation times. We do offer a list of private drivers as stated elsewhere here (very affordable and well recommended). There are tuk tuk drivers at the square that will take you around Chuburna and Chelem. There are white combi vans at the square that will take you to Chelem or Progreso.

Tiendas and Grocery Stores

We can help you arrange contact with Lupita's tienda shop which is a short walk east of Casa Ixtul. She also carries fresh fruit, vegetables, lots of canned goods, snacks and drinks. Of course there are other tienda's as well but Lupita is the closest to Casa Ixtul with the best selection. If you have specific food requirements or prefer to cook larger meals at home, we recommend that you ask your driver to stop at a larger grocery store in Progreso/Merida before retiring at Casa Ixtul.
