Sightseeing

Cambridge, home to the famous university amongst other things, is a direct train ride from Wymondham station, taking 1 hour on modern trains. You can spend the day simply wandering round looking at the amazing universities and galleries, as well as chill out with a glass of wine and some nibbles at some of the eateries, or shop till you drop at some of the beautiful shops. Again, some great places for food, including Midsummer House, a 2* Michelin restaurant (chef is Daniel Clifford), which will require booking some time in advance. The food is out of this world and the price is as one would expect.

There are some truly stunning walks, beaches and villages around the North Norfolk coast, which is easily accessible via a car, or some of them by train from Norwich station. Holt has the most beautiful boutique shops, which have everything you never knew you needed, but now you have seen it, you absolutely can't think of why you didn't know you needed it! Sheringham has some lovely beach and countryside walks, and Blakeney, Cley, Wells, Brancaster all have some amazing wild walks, where you see minimal people and have loads of space. As one can expect there are some amazing foodie places to go to around this area - at Moreston Hall, we have the 1* Michelin restaurant which is run by Galston Black - local fresh produce and delicious food. In Brancaster, there is an annual oyster and champagne fayre, there are food markets aplenty and farm shops to be stopped at all the way through the journey.

Norwich is an ancient city that lies at the heart of rural East Anglia. It has a stunning castle, an amazing cathedral and fabulous shopping from boutique shops. It is a 15 minute train ride in from Wymondham, which is a 10 minute walk from the house. Trains run regularly too and from the station straight into the city. Norwich is well know for some amazing restaurants - make a beeline for St Benedicts Street for some great food choices, bars and cocktail bars - including Richard Bainbridges Benedicts Restaurant - where his winning dessert from the Great British Menu 'Nanny Bushs Trifle' is on the menu! It is delicious!

Things to do

Art Gallery near the UEA, with both permanent and temporary exhibitions, with a beautiful walk around the lake as well. They have sculptures dotted around - not only the pieces that you immediately can view without looking, but others that are tucked away around the lakeside walk and also on the roof of the Uni buildings themselves.

A fantastic castle with so many things to view and exhibitions to look at. I spent many hours here as a child - the fascination still holds and the history relating to East Anglia is plentiful within the castle walls. Learn about some of the history of Norwich.

Need to Know for Foodies!

Richard Bainbridges restaurant in Norwich, 3 rosettes and fab food. You can have a taste of the Nana Bushs Trifle which was a dish that got to 'the banquet' on Great British Menu! Keep an eye out for the cookery demonstrations, hire a private room for special occasion or in covid times, or for more vulnerable people, you can pre-order from a selection of menus for dining at home.

Amazing food and service is always found at Roger Hickmans. They don't have it on the website, but they will adapt their vegetarian menu to be vegan if you give them some notice. I had the taster menu with wine flight and my daughter had a vegan taster menu and it was a sight for sore eyes! You can have a pre-theatre meal at RH which is great value and the service is always impeccable.

A really cool place to eat, which literally was a bike shop! I used to work down the road when it was - over 30 years ago now. Brunch and tapas and great beers to be had here, a cool place to hang out over 3 floors.

Number 24 is probably the closest Wymondham gets to Fine Dining! The food they serve is good, well cooked food, but I would say that the restaurant is slightly outdated and the menu reflects the age of the patrons. Definitely worth going to if you want to stay in Wymondham and don't fancy the curry or the Thai options, but you want dining and waiting on - but you will need to book as tables do go.
