Howsham Mill is a Grade II listed 18th century watermill located on the River Derwent. Restored between 2004 and 2013, largely by volunteers, it is home to a new waterwheel and screw turbine which generates electricity to part fund the project. There is an environmental study/community centre, and the walks round the river there are super.

No visit to North Yorkshire would be complete without a trip on the North York Moors Railway – leave your car at Pickering and steam from Pickering to Grosmont, or go all the way through to Whitby. Glorious when the heather’s out in the summer, or time your stay to coincide with the annual War Weekend in the autumn.

Whitby is an ancient port with a fascinating history, a ruined abbey and a working harbour. It also has sandy beaches, donkey rides and rock pools, not to mention some of the best fish and chips. Whilst in Whitby, eat at the famous Magpie fish restaurant (queues even before Covid!) or its more contemporary relative Trenchers (www.trenchersrestaurant.co.uk), and take a pair of kippers home with you from Fortune’s Smokehouse in the old town (www.fortuneskippers.co.uk)

Visit the ruins of Kirkham Priory, just off the A64 and situated on the banks of the River Derwent. A perfect place to stop if on a family day out or if you're walking or cycling in this area of outstanding beauty and discover the story of monk's life or enjoy a picnic by the river in the Augustinian ruins.

If you’re looking for a great dog-friendly beach, our favourite Is Hunmanby Gap. There’s nothing there except a cute café which serves snacks, hot drinks and ice cream (they do a great bacon butty and mug of tea) – and lots of dogs! Just check the Filey Tide Tables before leaving (www.tidetimes.org.uk/filey-bay-tide-times).
