Neighborhoods

Northwest of Downtown sits a section of historic neighborhoods that date back to the late 1800s. Residents once flocked to the area to escape the big city, but today it’s home to diverse Houstonians that are drawn to its rich and character-filled architecture, mom and pop-type shops and funky restaurants. Find something you never knew you wanted at one of 19th Street’s quaint boutiques. Thrift stores, antique havens, and cafes prove to be popular at the Heights-strip. Stop by for the “First Saturday Arts Market” on the first Saturday of each month for live music, crafts, plants and artwork.

It's a mixed concept that seeks to offer quality local eats for the busy Houstonian who mostly eats out. Their main goal is to attain culinary excellence in even the simplest dishes using sustainably farmed ingredients from farms as close to the city as possible. Their menu is mostly composed of Texas classics like sliders, slow-cooked meats, fried green tomatoes and monkey bread, but each of the dishes has a surprising gourmet twist. The space is equally cool, with industrial-looking exposed ceilings and a modern, functional service area that shares space with their market, where you can buy locally sourced food items to take home and experiment with.

Donovan Park is heaven on earth for children, and all ages at that. Located in the heart of the neighborhood, the kids call it ‘castle park’ for the way the structure resembles that of castle turrets. Privately managed by the Houston Heights Association, it is gated, safe, and open to the public. Its wooden jungle gym is in perfect condition and hiding spots are abundant. Even adults can enjoy themselves while eating lunch in the picnic areas. They might even have a blast on the epic wooden train! Painted mosaic tiles have been installed since 1995; it’s truly a charming little place.

Once a church, Aurora Picture Show is now converted into a cinema where moviegoers sit in the pews to worship a huge screen… Or just to watch movies. It is a non-profit organization that promotes independent films and new media arts. The films are put together by guest artists. Viewings consist of poetry, independent children’s shows, experimental pieces, and sometimes live performances. One memorable example is a live-action documentary with a live band as the soundtrack. It’s a great opportunity to experience something new and an alternative to the typical movie theater that just dries out an entire wallet.

This place has a fun, funky atmosphere with regularly played live music. This intimate setting feels like a private concert with the arrangement of tables close to the stage. The decor is ’70s-inspired, with music spanning across several decades, such as old-school blues, punk rock, and all different types of upcoming bands. There is also a back patio for people to enjoy in the evenings. Dan Electro’s doesn’t serve liquor, but it allows customers to bring their own and will provide the rest of the set-up. Known as the “Gateway to the Bay”, the city of Kemah is located along Galveston Bay and is most attractive to visitors for this very reason. The city has an entire entertainment district full of bayside restaurants and attractions geared towards tourists. Most notably, Kemah has a large boardwalk right on the bay with plenty of rides and other amusement park fun. As one might expect, the boardwalk has classic arcade games, restaurants, shopping, and thrill rides, many of which overlook the water. Beyond the boardwalk, the city also offers carriage and boat rides and a spooky excursion through its haunted lighthouse district.
