Restaurants and Botequins - Ipanema

Rio has upscale and casual restaurants , with many in the Ipanema neighborhood
Restaurante Paz e Amor (Peace and Love) is an excellent traditional Brazilian indoor/outdoor restaurant with reasonable prices. It's very unpretentious. Meals are large enough for two people. The Frango Milanese (breaded pan fried split chicken breast) with Arroz Grega (Greek style rice ) is a typical dish. The fried shrimp is fantastic as well. For a quick inexpensive meal you can sit on the social side of the restaurant that serves plates of the day (prato do dia). Or relax in the main restaurant and enjoy the service of wiaters who have worked there 25+ years.

A classic Brazilian botequim (casual indoor/outdoor restaurant/bar) . They serve picanha churrasco (steak) grilled at the table, pizza, galeto (small chicken whole), fish dishes, appetizers, and cold chopp (draft beer). The restaurant stays open very late and is walking distance from the apartment to pickup a pizza to go. Big TVs for futebol of course! On Saturdays they serve Cozido and Feijoada on Sundays! One of our favorite botequins in Brasil. Francisco is a wonderful waiter.

A churrascaria rodizio in Ipanema next to General Osorio park. It's the classic all you can eat steak and other meats affair. They also have a very good buffet bar with sushi, salad, and traditional Brazilian dishes. It's very reasonably priced for this type of restaurant. We recommend walking the 4 blocks to Carretao from the apartment for dinner 8-9pm , and taking a taxi or Uber ride back to the apartment if it's past 10pm. Tip: don't load up on the appetizers before you've had the beef!

This is an excellent "por kilo" buffet restaurant, meaning that you pay only for the weight of the food that you eat. The churrasco (beef) counter is really good and fresh meat grilled in the moment. We like to eat here in the mid afternoon for a late lunch or early dinner, when it's not crowded.

Getting Around

Options include the Metro (one block away), Taxi (hail in front of the apartment, Bus stop at front of the apartment) and Uber.
You can order an Uber ride using their app and our apartment's WiFi. You can track the drivers route with some accuracy. The driver won't be able to text you of his arrival unless you have a local cell phone number, so you should walk down the curb in front of the building and look for the car by description and tag #. Brazilian cars license plates on both the front and back. Uber in Rio is very reliable and inexpensive. Taxis are also good and cheaper than most other big cities.
