The Vegueta neighborhood was declared a National Artistic Historic Site by Decree of April 5, 1973. Vegueta was the founding nucleus of the city, the place where in 1478 the troops of the conqueror Juan Rejón erected the Real de las Palmas, a name he would receive from the palm trees that rose there. It was the first Castilian site in the Atlantic, as well as the place where the Crown of Castile began the Conquest of the Canary Islands.
