Traveler advice

Getting around

Uber: safest and best

At any point you can choose from 3-5 Ubers within a few blocks. Rides are cheap at about $2 per ride. Do not take taxis in Mexico City as they are generally unsafe and pose a safety risk. City has good metro coverage at 5 cents per ride but it’s hot, crowded, does not drop you off exactly where you want and carries a risk of pick pockets.
Customs and culture

Women on the right

Latin culture is about respect and courtesy. When walking it’s considered impolite to let your lady walk closer to the street side of the sidewalk. It’s an unspoken rule but commonly observed. Men, try to stay on the traffic side of sidewalk when walking in the city.
Customs and culture

Green dots in the city

As you walk you’ll encounter large green dots with arrows on sidewalks. This marks a safe point in case of an earthquake. Mexico City has one of the most advanced early warning systems for earthquakes and a city wide alarm gives up to 90 seconds heads up in case of an incoming tremor.
Getting around

Men to back of the bus

If riding a public bus, men are separated to the back of the bus from the women in the front.
