One of the best ways to experience the mountain up close is to hike the 7 mile (RT) Cooper Spur Trail. Beyond the fact that you get absolutely awesome views of Mt. Hood, it is the highest constructed trail on the mountain. This is a difficult hike and due to snow conditions it's really only an option in the Summer/Fall.

The trail is a good hike anytime because of the commanding view it offers in the central part of the gorge. It's especially pretty in the Spring time with wildflowers all along the hiking trail. The Columbia River Gorge National Scenic area charges a $5 day use fee per vehicle. This is a moderate/hard hike with 2,900ft in elevation gain and a 7-mile loop.
