What to eat!

Copenhagen is overflowing with great eateries and restaurants, and you can find endless lists online of must eats. The following recommendations are completely biased and based on where we have had the greatest experiences and therefore think you will as well – with maybe a tiny bias towards our local neighborhood joints ;)
● Hart Bakery Owned and run by a former Noma chef (yep, we are talking about the formerly best restaurant in the world Noma). Dangerously close to this flat and with an even more dangerously addictive must-try cardamom croissant. Price tag is hefty but worth it. at least trying it out once, and it’s really close to this place 

Not actually a breakfast place, unless chocolate truffles and ice cream are your breakfast go-to’s, this chocolatery and ice cream parlor offers the best homemade ice cream in Denmark – no joke, first day of summer the line can be almost 1 km long. Make sure to get the chocolate dipped cone and remember that you can get tasters of the ice cream before choosing. The place is just across the street, so no excuse not to go.

Madklubben (the Food club) is a concept casual dining restaurant with a selection of different themed restaurants throughout the city. Their main philosophy is that good food should not be overcomplicated and more importantly, it should be affordable. They have a changing menu with a selection of around five starters, mains and desserts and you can have a three course menu for 225 kr.

Initially envisioned as the city’s uniting street food market, these two large market halls quickly became known for their upscale and sometimes exorbitantly priced produce. The place does still have its merits though and you are sure to find cheapish quick bites. If you are willing to fork out, the produce, deli and gourmet sections are of exceptional quality. Drop by the Hija De Sanchez stall (authentic Mexican) which is run by a former Noma chef – the place won an award as the best street food outlet in the world. I’m not sure I agree, but it still is pretty good

Located in the trendy meat packing district this fusion kitchen succeeds in navigating world cuisine from homemade Italian pasta to marsala bao which is a real feat. They offer a 10-course tasting menu and are happy to accommodate any allergies & dislikes. Cocktails are beautifully made and their wine cellar stocked with natural wines. In summer they also have outdoor seating. Honestly one of our favorite spots.

If you dream of succulent and sizeable steaks with only the crème de la crème of trimmings, then look no further. Mash (Modern American Steak House) has firmly earned its place as the best steakhouse in Copenhagen for a reason. The demand has enabled them to open several outlets without compromising on quality. Be warned, it’s pricy, but so are most steak joints in this city, and at least you will be sure to honestly have had the best. We recommend going to the restaurant at the top of Tivoli Hotel for panoramic views of the city

A non-profit community space more than a restaurant, this venue offers more than 60+ events a week, including a daily communal set dinner where you will literally rub shoulders with Vesterbro locals, expats and visitors from far and wide at shared long tables. The cuisine here is about good, homemade and hearty food, with a heavy focus on vegetarian dishes several times a week – and from Monday-Thursday this will only set you back a measly 50 kr. – probably the best meals for the price in this city. On the weekends price goes up to 100 kr. but includes dessert. You can see the menu online where you also have to buy tickets in advance!

For a very modern (and delicious take) on Smørrebrød, this place can’t be recommended enough! Run by Mikkeller and boasting a bib gourmand, they serve up gorgeous pieces of artwork on a dish, with great service but in a relaxed atmosphere. Worth going for either lunch or dinner and do try out their homemade snaps (a spirit always enjoyed along with this Danish staple).

The perfect Smørrebrøds place If you prefer to try a traditional take. The prices are easy on the pocket, the interior and dining service sends loving thoughts to grandmas cozy living room (literally, my grandma had the same plates) and they make everything from scratch, unlike most “traditional” other places mainly catering for tourists. Do note, since they serve the classics, it’s not particularly vegetarian / vegan friendly.

Craft beer, wine bars and douchy yet worth-the-visit haunts

Copenhagen has experienced a resurgence of the bar scene in recent years, where particularly craft beers led by Mikkeller have made it firmly onto the city’s drinking map. If beer is not your thing, the city still has a cornucopia of wine and cocktails bars to choose from, so not to worry. Our picks are mostly beer bars with a couple of wine bars thrown in, since they are our regular hangouts and because you will quickly discover that cocktails can be exorbitantly priced in this city. The last two suggestions are for the sake of novelty.
a hidden gem of a craft beer bar often outshone by its neighbor the meat packing district. This has been our favorite hangout for years due to the knowledgeable staff, outdoor beer garden, cosy interior and not least great representation of local and international breweries on their 20 taps – oh yeah prices are remarkably good for this city, with a pint normally setting you back 50 kr.

Speaking of the Meat Packing District, Warpigs is another Mikkeler joint and raw looking Gastro pub. The place is a must-see for real beer aficionados and they do serve up some beautiful brews. The place is pricier than Fermentoren, but you are able to get Authentic American BBQ fare with homemade BBQ sauces and the whole shebang. Mind you, even though the food is undoubtedly good, I personally think it’s way over-priced.

Denmark has a very relaxed drinking culture and it’s perfectly legal to enjoy alcoholic beverages in public spaces, which you will notice on any given summer day. Kihoskh caters to just that, being a convenience store / craft beer shop conveniently located next to a boulevard covered with grassy patches, which gets swamped with sun hungry locals quenching their thirst in Kihoskh’s extensive beer selection. If in search of good wine in central Cph, this is bound to be your best option. This Italian style wine bar is located on a side street to Nyhavn and the atmosphere is really cosy, particularly during the colder months where their sea of candles light up the winter darkness. What to do in Copenhagen

As any other big city Copenhagen has a lot to offer in terms of sights and attractions, and you can find a lot of good recommendations online, particularly if you go to the official site https://www.visitdenmark.com/ - here you get relevant and updated tourist information not only about Copenhagen but entire Denmark. The following list is based on what we normally like to get up to around the city and the surrounding area.
Are two large and lush parks just at the end of Frederiksberg Allé and Vesterbrogade respectively. Frederiksberg Have is the more romantic and prim of the two, with fountains, a castle and view to the elephants living at the neighbouring Copenhagen Zoo. Søndermarken is slightly more wild and adventurous and a hit with runners. While staying here we think it’s a must to visit both parks, whether for a run or casual stroll and on warm days we highly recommend grabbing a picnic basket and a good book to relax for some hours on the vast lawns along with all the locals.

Ethical considerations regarding the concept of Zoos aside, Copenhagen Zoo comes across as one of the more conscious institutions, particularly due to their focus on animal welfare and natural stimulation of the animals. Tivoli theme park was created in 1846 and has managed to survive the changing times and remain ever popular with locals and visitors alike. With its beautiful gardens and fountains, classic architecture, candy and caramel scents flowing through the air and decent rides it’s worth experiencing - even though it might be a bit of a tourist magnet. Especially during the summer months it’s worth going on Fridays where they always stage free concerts with Danish but also international bands – line-up this year includes MØ and Jason Derulo. You might already have heard about the (notorious) free city of Christiania in the center of Copenhagen and its turbulent history. If not, it’s basically a hippie commune with a pretty liberal attitude towards drugs which inevitably causes some friction with the local police. Generally the area is perfectly safe to visit and don’t let yourself be scared by the dogs running loose or the ill-concealed pot stalls and their dodgy-looking proprietors. Everything about Christiania and its quirkiness is in stark contrast to the rest of the orderly city, which is why it should be a must visit. There are also some quaint organic cafes and coffee shops as well concert venues which are another reason to go. Keep in mind that at nighttime it can become a bit dicey though, and that photography is not allowed on the main Pusher Street.
