In the heart of historic Annapolis, its central building, McDowell hall is one of the oldest in Annapolis. And its modernist Mellon Hall (designed by Richard Neutra) contains the Mitchell Art Gallery, a small venue for ranging exhibits of high quality.

Perhaps the best preserved colonial home in America, with most of its original furnishings. A gem of Georgian elegance in the ambit of historic St. John's College and the Navy chapel.

The U.S. Naval Academy museum has a fantastic exhibit of dockyard model ships dating back to 17th century. The intricacy will amaze connoisseur and neophyte alike, especially the models made by French prisoners of war from whittled bones of their food!

Food Scene

Coffee's delicious at this out-of-the-way industrial coffee roastery. Baked stuff from Baltimore also delicious -- almond croissant is a personal favorite.

Best lunch deal in town for best fish -- fresh, fresh, fresh, and tasty too, a la Japanonaise, on the Chesapeake. Hey, it's America, it's a melting pot.

The "everything else" is WINE -- plus chi-chi pizza and small plates. The cool wine bar in Eastport tourists can't find. Way cool for Annapolis; so cool, you have to wait in a long line, because they don't take reservations. If you go way early or way late, wait's not too long. Think chic, not cheap.

Expensive Italian worth it. Classic Italian cuisine with contemporary Italian flair. Great Italian wine list. Don't mind the decor. Order the grilled squid for an antipasto.

This American small plates place is just around the corner off Forest Drive. Really cool place is really uncool spot. Isn't that cool? Eat at the bar. (Btw, alla americana, the small plates ain't that small.)

Modern Thai, if you like that sort of thing. I like it hot. Also a mecca for cocktails.

The expansive outdoor deck of this American fish restaurant offers one of the best views of Annapolis, from across the water over the sinuous Navy bridge. Definitely the place to be in glorious weather.

Essentials

Convenient location. Not too big. Easy to get in and out. Rite Aid Drug Store is right next door, and for some crazy reason, sells wine & liquor in the back.

Parks & Nature

This park is right around the corner from us. Besides its athletic courts and summertime pool, it has hiking paths along the cliffs of Spa Creek. For a nice 45 minute walk-'n-hike: go one block down Spa Rd over to Silopanna; at the crossroads at the end of Silopanna, keep straight, and follow the wending hilly street for about a half mile, keeping a lookout on your left for the access to a charming footbridge, an old undulating wooden pass over Spa Creek; once over the foodbridge, go left into the woods and follow the cliffy hiking path to its end at the Primrose Avenue boat launch, with its lovely little view of the dome and steeples of historic Annapolis.

Drinks & Nightlife

I go here to sit outside in the garden, with its ancient overgrown canopy of wisteria vines. Offers the usual brewery offerings and bar fare -- the fried calamari are crispy and abundant.

This overpriced restaurant has a lounge upstairs that can stay open later than any other bar in Annapolis because it predates the city's bar curfew. Old fashioned and dark, in the right way.

A bar-restaurant for the young and hip -- but I like it too (I stick to the ground level -- terrace is a pick-up scene). The bartenders are ingratiatingly earnest about their trendy cocktails. Food's not bad either. Music is touch and go. Anyways, I like the place.
