Traveler advice

Getting around

Walking is key. Wear good walking shoes! Cobblestone streets

Plan to walk and get your steps in. Good shoes are a must.
Ways to save

Always change large peso bills into smaller bills.

Use ATM machines at Banks. Pick up a copy of the local guide The Attencion to know what is going on. Do not carry large sums of cash. Stay hydrated. Wear sunscreen. Get a credit card that does not charge a foreign transaction fee. Use Bajiogo for transit from the airports. Do not hesitate to try some Spanish with the locals. They will appreciate you trying.
Don't miss

The Mercado de Artisanas is a must.

Visit the Mercado Ignacio Ramirez is great. Also viist the local English language Library for the cool vibe and to meet interesting people. Friday and Saturday at the restaurant Los Milagros on Relox for fabulous music by Los Peques!
Book before you go

Check out the local aurports BJX and QRO

Try to avoid traveling into CDMX airport if possible. Both Leon and Queretero have great airports. Take the Bajiogo shuttle. Reliable and a great value. Try to avoid renting a car....
Getting around

Taxis and Uber and the local Bus.

We use Uber on a regular basis. Tip the drivers. The taxis are good as well. Plan on having small bills. 100 peso notes are best to get change. Try to call a loca Taxi company such as San Miguelitois good. You wil pay a bit more when you call for a taxi but they are dependble and reliable. Do not be reluctant to take the Primera Plus bus service for trips to other cities. Clean, safe, air conditioned. A great way to travel to Guanajuato City, Queretero, Guadalajara, Mexico City. The local bus is 8 pesos. Easy to get around and see the city. Very interesting.
What to pack

Comfy shoes, bring a jacket or wrap for cooler nights.

Travel light, wear layers and wraps as it gets cool at night. Cold in the Winter at night. San Miguel tends to be a conservative city, avoid wearing shorts or super revealing attire in the city. People tend to dress in a somewhat creative and fashionable style. Lots of lovely scarves and wraps to be purchased from the local vendors.
Ways to save

Change money locally. Be mindful of the exchange rate.

Get a no fee credit card that does not charge you for a foreign transaction. We like Charles Schwab. Be mindful of bank hours and policies. Be prepared to show a passport when changing money. Break down your large bills to make getting change easier. Use your 10 peso coins.
Customs and culture

Be polite to the locals.

The local people are very welcoming to tourists. They are proud of their city. Ask before you take someone's photo, especially be careful of photos of their children. It is considered rude. Avoid talking politics. Don’t expect the locals to discuss the Cartels or El Chapo....Dont be that person. Don't yell for the waiter or server. Tip generously.
