We LOVE this restaurant, just such a fun experience. The food is usually all vegetarian and very creative with fantastic tastes. Reservations are released at the beginning of the month for the following month and they are usually all gone in a few hours. The FAQ indicates the precise dates and times when reservations are released. https://www.exploretock.com/vanderlyle Dinner only £70 per person

This is the setting for the TV series and you can visit the church and maybe recognize a few other sites. It is also a very pleasant little village just outside of Cambridge that you can enjoy without knowing (or caring) about the TV series. It is an hour’s walk from the house and passes through lovely fields by the river Cam for half of this walk. There is The Red Lion in the centre of the village that is worth stopping at though it tends to get very busy on weekends. There are other choices of pubs and restaurants as well, including the Orchard Tea Garden. If the idea of a two hour return walk is too much for you, you can drive to Newnham and park just where the walk through the fields starts. This will cut your walk time in half and will allow you to concentrate your energy on the most enjoyable part of the walk.

Ely is a charming town on the river Great Ouse. It also is home to a magnificent cathedral, among the most impressive in England if not Europe, as well as the house of Oliver Cromwell. It is charming to walk by the river and the Peacocks Tea Room is quaint and highly recommended. It is roughly a half hour drive from Cambridge on the A10 and parking in the town is free. It is also easily accessible by train.

A delightful and tastefully renovated old abbey. Lord Fairhaven was son to an English parliamentarian and an American industrial heiress who, when elevated to the peerage, used his mother’s wealth to create his new home. Though the house is indeed luxurious, it is not ostentatious and in many ways is even modest. The gardens are also worth visiting and you can visit an old mill there. Anglesey Abbey is roughly 20 minutes by car from the house. It is run by the National Trust.

Saffron Walden has been market town since the 12th century and Saturdays is still market day. While it can’t boast of the historic sites that Ely has to offer, it is hard to beat in terms of charm and picturesque, if not crooked, old houses. Saffron Walden is a town where it is pleasant just to be there and is considered by many one of the best places to live in England. There is also Audley End House just outside of Saffron Walden, a rather austere yet impressive historical house run by the English Heritage. Saffron Walden is roughly a half hour drive away. The train station is Audley End station if you want to go by train, though this station is roughly 2 miles or 3.5 kilometres from the town centre.

Lavenham is a picturesque town that thanks to the wool trade and its famous Lavenham Blue broadcloth was once one of the richest town in Tudor England. Time moved on but Lavenham didn’t and so the town has kept its medieval charm intact. Today Lavenham is a thriving village with a strong community spirit. It is a hub of independent boutique shops and galleries, fantastic restaurants, chic hotels and luxury holiday cottages, plenty of cafes and pubs, and has a full diary of events and activities for locals and visitors alike. The Great House in particular offers sumptuous fine dining.
