Hire a narrowboat from water farm canal boat hire and heading to the Loch free Lancaster canal for our first trip on a canal boat. We collected our boat from Barton grange just north of Preston and were given an hours worth of instructions croon by the owner George. After that, we were left to our own devices. We decided to head north at a sedate 4 MPH and were soon in the countryside passing nesting swans and ducklings. Operating the narrowboat was fairly good easy and we soon got the hang of stopping at the numero pubs and restaurants along the way. The kids loved the narrowboat and enjoyed seeing the wildlife. All in all a really great weekend.

Visit Lancaster primarily to visit the castle. A reasonable price was paid to join a guided tour with the excellent James, a very knowledgeable, patient and charming tour guide. Whilst there was some refurbishment of the castle taking place the tour was a great education into the various uses of the castle and prison.
