Cafes & Coffee Shops

Commonplace Coffee has a special place in my heart. TJ, the owner, and Frank, the store manager, are incredible people. TJ opened the original location in my hometown, Indiana, which quickly became my "home base" as a commuter in college. When I moved to Pittsburgh, my first stop was Commonplace MWS (Mexican War Streets) right by Shannon's office. Even TJ admits it's the prettiest location!

Randyland's a free outdoor art exhibit! It's amazing for taking pictures. A local artist named Randy started painting and creating outside one day, and over the years this crazy and COLORFUL masterpiece became a landmark!

Experimental art! Be aware there are three separate buildings; the main entrance is on Sampsonia Way by the cafe and gift shop. This place is not for everyone, and it may have inappropriate content for children depending on the exhibits, but it's awesome for art-lovers.

This is not a traditional theater house. The space is normally set up as a thrust stage! (audience on three sides) When I saw my friend Lydia act in In the Time of the Butterflies here, I loved it.

How do you explain City of Asylum? It's a bookstore, artist home, restaurant partner, and free event hostess. Poetry, prose, music, speeches, freedom, and everything in between. The first City of Asylum gathering I went to was for a gospel group promoting their album. They were incredible and the space was neat (and tight). People young and old, of all different backgrounds, came to listen and sing together.

My dad's coworker, Dr. Laura, opened a winery on Northside from his vineyard in Argentine. The small space offers a wonderful atmosphere, delightful wine, and delicious tapas! Bar-style front for singles/couples and restaurant-style back for groups.

My first time here was the day after I moved to Pittsburgh. I was approached on the Sunday morning train with a broken announcer by a man named Walter who wanted breakfast. This was the first place open. I had no idea where I was. Since then, I've stepped into this space countless times - company outings, cornhole, nachos, live music, catching up with friends, flights of pumpkin beer - and I highly recommend.
