Family Owned Gems

These Places are special each for their own reason but all with the philosophy of the owners expressing themselves through their service. https://www.kingfisherseafoodcalgary.com/
When people ask me "Whats your favorite Canadian food I refer to Kingfisher ironically enough run by this Korean and Japanese duo Joey and Haruyo. High quality seafood at a very reasonable price and guaranteed your feeling welcome. Kingfisher starts with high quality of the basics, high quality ingredients, and staff. Family owned and operated by Joey from Korea, a secret, humble to a fault, musician and master Chef, with experience in Korean and Japanese cuisine from living in both countries he brilliantly brings the two together for beautiful contrasted dishes with flavors complementing each other. On top of that there is authentic Canadian seafood dishes! Sounds unreal right? The original owner from Canada's East Coast, made the Deep fried Calamari, Prawns and Scallops in hot sauce recipes and they remain unchanged today. Once a month an open mic is held and buskers from all walks of life come and play, you can hear many languages and feel the comfort of the musicians expressing themselves as if they are playing for friends. You can see more photos taken by one of our previous guests here: https://www.veveyphotography.com/encounters-and-chances/4p8n8sdt5oh5id4xtl8sexbuc0d4u6 Everyone I bring here says there is something special about it, come and see, guaranteed to have a lasting impression.

YYC #1 Pizza shop on trip advisor for a reason! One wall filled with sticky notes from travelers thanking Gaga Pizzaeria for their great food and friendly atmosphere and another with paper money from across the globe. The menu offers a variety of Pizzas including the Signora Gaga, my personal favorite because it has fig but it also has an ingredients I most often hate: Olives, and yet in contrast to the other ingredients it's just the perfect balance. I'm always impressed when a chef can take an ingredient I usually don't like and make it enjoyable. Beyond Pizza the menu also featured convenient food from their grab and go section: Pizzolini, Burek, Calzone Pocket Pizza and a Greek Salad. They also make one of the only inhouse made Baklava! Nebojsa Zeljic is one of the most passionately involved small business owners that I know. During my time homeless I found Gaga Pizza and they were welcoming to me as they are to any other customer. Nebojsa once said in an interview “I have enough. Some people have nothing” and this philosophy is carried through the inner workings of Gaga Pizza.

Without Papers Pizza is where you go when you want real pizza. Personally whenever I found myself in a hospital dealing with medical issues and feeling overwhelmed by the world and the fragility of the human body, it was Without Papers Pizza that comforted me to take a moment to enjoy and keep hustling. With only the best ingredients the crust alone is profoundly enjoyable. They got an awesome menu even featuring a desert pizza and new specials for appetizers and locally brewed drinks written on the boards above the kitchen and bar. The owner has brought musicians in on a weekly bases as well as comedians. There is also two projectors on the ceiling facing opposite directions casting a movie with subtitles on walls, he chooses his films intentionally and I have very much appreciated the art and stories he chooses to share (Some including Mononoke Hime, The Animatrix, Blade Runner) It's a broad range but for someone like me who can't justify spending money at the movies I definitely justify the overall price of Without Papers including the entertainment, atmosphere and remarkable Pizza! If you're on a tight budget please see Gaga Pizza in "All Encompassing Experiences"

I could say this is a Family Owned Gem as well but the staff are all hired staff other than the Owner. Koki and his father worked together to open Shiki Menya back in 2014 and have met great success and popularity in the local foodie scene. They use the best quality local ingredients and are worth the wait you might have to endure before enjoying. "We focus on quality vs. quantity. We make our noodles in house and our soups from scratch using local pork from local farms. Therefore we serve limited quantities of ramen daily. Our closing time is dependent on when we sell out of this number. " -Koki *Fun Fact~ This is where I first was exposed to the magnificent creation of "Shades Of Blue" by Madlib (An incredible jazz/hiphp album sampling from classic Blue Note Records musicians).
