Sightseeing
25 min from Oak Island, great outdoor trail in the Greens swamp preserve, which is in the middle of the only place in the world where you can see wild venus fly trap carnivorous plants and other species. Best to visit in spring, can be very hot in summer. Tip to find venus fly traps : they are very small (3 to 4 inches tall) and they like a bit of moss in full sun. They are protected species, so do not remove.

At low tide ONLY (check tides schedule on line), this island reveals (garanteed !) small shark teeth (mostly 1/4" to 1/2" but recently a megalodon tooth was found) that were dredged out in the 1800s to increase Cape Fear river depth for large barges. Accessible with kayak or paddle board. Can also be a great place to enjoy its beach.
