Travel like a local

While classical music is Vienna’s claim to fame, there’s more things to do in the Austrian capital than learn about Mozart and Beethoven. As proper, stately, and beautiful as it is here along the Danube River, there’s a creative side that has breathed modern life into Vienna (which may be one of the reasons it has been named one of the most liveable cities in the world). Go beyond traditional tours and activities for a local’s perspective of Vienna with Airbnb Experiences.

Best of Vienna Walking Tour
Discover Vienna's historic old town on a fun and comprehensive walking tour with me. We leave the big tour groups behind and explore the city in our own small team. Let's make it interactive - there are no dumb questions ;) We start on the banks of the Danube canal to find out why the Romans decided to settled down here of all places. A short walk later we marvel at the impressive tower of St. Stephen's Cathedral while I tell you about its hidden symbolism of numbers. Further highlights on the way include Mozart's apartment, the old Greek quarter, romantic hidden alleys and courtyards, the Spanish Riding School as well as an almost real da Vinci. Upon arrival at the vast Hofburg Palace complex we will finally talk about the rise of the mightiest family in the history of Europe: the Habsburgs. But Vienna's history doesn't stop with the fall of the Habsburgs: where did Hitler speak in front of 200,000 cheering Austrians? And what makes modern-day Vienna the city with the highest standard of living worldwide? While taking in the beauty of the city I will keep you entertained with the best stories about its past and present - plus some questionable jokes! Keep in mind that we finish at Albertinaplatz, not where we met at the beginning. All tours are held in English.

Classical Concerts at Mozart's house
I would like to share my passion for classical music and dive into the world of Viennese classical music together with you for one evening. Together with my colleagues, we as Mozart Ensemble Vienna play impressive pieces of Viennese classical music. Be enchanted by the world of classical music and immerse yourself mentally in the time in which the great masters of Viennese classical music worked! There is no better place for this than the Sala Terrena, where our concerts take place. The Sala Terrena is the oldest concert hall in Vienna and serves as a perfect atmosphere to put us into the time of Mozart, Schubert or Beethoven. At the time, Mozart himself played in this historic place and earned his living for his first apartment in Vienna. The Sala Terrena, which is only a few minutes' walk away from St. Stephen's Cathedral, also impresses with its beautiful frescos with late venetian renaissance style. Hi, please come in the Singerstrasse 7. The concert is not in the Mozart museum. The main entrance is in front of Singerstrasse 10 (is a big haus and they are two entrances.) We have a poster stand with poster of the concert in front of the house. See you later. Regards.

This tour is about oddities, quirky stories of the city's past and the beauty of Vienna beyond the main attractions. We start on its most Italian "piazza" and will amongst others marvel at some fine Baroque illusional painting, visit the place where Mozart got a kick in his gifted backside and stroll through the former Jewish heart of Vienna. We look at the city's most famous doorway and discover Beethoven's neighborhood. Finally, the "Muse who's had it" will introduce us to Vienna's scientific heart and academic hall of fame. Always walking the most charming alleys along the way we'll stay off the big tourist tracks. The tour ends at the main university of Vienna. All tours are held in English.
Schnitzel & Strudel: Cooking with Lena
** NUMBER 1 COOKING CLASS IN AUSTRIA ON AIRBNB** Suitable for beginners as well as intermediates! In this cooking class I will share the secret of my crispy schnitzels and juicy apple strudel with you. With me you will learn about Austrian cuisine, the kind my grandmother cooked for me when I was a small child. The cooking class takes place at my home - in the apartment where already my great-grandparents lived. First I will tell you something about Austrian cuisine, then I will explain the dishes that we will cook together later. The menu will have 2 or 3 courses depending on the number of participants: (my grandmother's famous Old Viennese potato soup), chicken schnitzel with cucumber and potato salad and freshly baked apple strudel for dessert! It is very important to me that the participants actually cook as much as possible themselves, with my help of course, so that they can then cook the dishes at home. After cooking, we will eat all the dishes together. We prepare traditional Austrian dishes. Most dishes contain meat. I can also make the cooking course vegetarian, lactose-free or gluten-free. (Vegan is not possible, also you cannot make gluten-free apple strudel) Please just let us know when booking! All courses are held in English!

Your guide to Vienna

Where do locals hang out in Vienna?

Most locals are content shopping, dining, and hitting the bars in their own bezirk (or district), but the metro can quickly whisk you from one spot to the next for those who want to get out and explore the city center. In the winter, you’ll find locals huddled in cozy bars and cafes in places such as the 4th district, or out enjoying Christkindlmarkt and Schönbrunn, among other Christmas markets around the city. And for shopping, most locals don’t mind sharing either the streets of Mariahilferstrasse.

What are the most unique things to do in Vienna?

Go to a classical piano concert

Musicians host you at Sala Terrena, the oldest concert hall in Vienna near St. Stephen's Cathedral, and the venue where Mozart played to earn enough money to rent his first apartment. For a performance in a different setting, head to a small art gallery, with a grand piano on stage, to enjoy original and classic arrangement by an acclaimed pianist.

Learn to cook schnitzel and strudel

Your local guide shares their grandmother’s recipes and lets you in on the secret to making the crispiest schnitzel and the crunchiest apfelstrudel (apple strudel). Discuss Austrian cuisine and more over a 2- or 3-course meal.

Take a tour to learn about the spies of Vienna

Expect to retrace bold plans, and find signs and clues hidden in plain sight that represent a dark time in the country’s history. At the end, you will know more than enough to be dangerous on the topic.

Kayak or bike in Vienna

Experience another perspective on the water or on two wheels. Tandem kayaks out on the Danube River are a fun local activity in the warmer months; meanwhile the city’s bikeable streets can lead you to hidden gems faster than on foot.
